"special DVD player Wii version"?

Right Nintendo, I knew there's no technical reason why the current version of the Wii couldn't play DVD movies, and here's the proof.

I know you'd have to pay the DVD consortium of calamatous intent an extra fee, but wrap up that fee in the price of some special wii-ware channel rather than the price of the system (the same as MS did with the "DVD playback set" for the original XBox) and that won't be a problem.

That said, I honestly don't care about DVD playback. All I'm saying is that Nintendo has no good reason to make a brand new version with a feature the other one technically already has.

People still use their consoles to play DVDs?

I use my 360 to play DVDs. I mean it has a player right in there. Why would I waste money on a "dedicated" player? The days where such things don't "offer as many features" are long gone. There's really nothing meaningful that a dedicated player of any sort offers that consoles don't already do.

Actually lately I use my laptop, and again, why wouldn't I?

Why not a laptop? Smaller screen for one...

Why not just use a DVD player? Well, because most people already have one... and unless you buy a remote for your console, it's much more convenient to use a DVD player. And even if you do, wouldn't it be easier to be able to just leave games in your console, and put DVDs in their own unit?

I think the "console as DVD player" thing mattered a lot around 2000 or so, but matters much, much less now. People already have ways of playing DVDs, whether it be DVD players or other consoles... no one cares whether the Wii can or not.

I actually agree there. I'm just saying it's clearly possible and there's no good reason for Nintendo to make a new version of the system for it to play back DVDs.

I also don't think it really matters any more if any SPECIFIC console can play DVDs.

That said, I don't own a DVD player in the sense of something that only plays DVDs, and I never will. I have no reason to. Set top box ideal may have been mocked, but clearly it's actually working pretty well.

...Why exactly would I think it's easier to "leave a game" in my 360? I don't get that. I always put away my games when I'm done playing them. Most of the time, my system trays are empty. As for remotes, modern systems use wireless controllers anyway. It's already "remote". Maybe not the best, but I don't really care about that. It can play DVDs and I'd be an idiot to pay even $50 for a whole new device JUST for the remote. I would also condemn anyone else that did so when they had a perfectly good player in the form of some game console.

The DVD film compatibility gimmick worked better in 2000 when the technology was still new ,Most people didn't even have a home dvd player at the turn of the century ,Not anymore.

For me I have three dvd options in my bedroom, The computer,The xbox360 and a Toshiba dvd video player, But the comp wins since I can use headsets.

Odd. I guess all the stuff about the disk rotating backwards or whatever lies Nintendo was feeding us just turned out to be total bullshit. I am let down, this is worse than finding out that no one likes me. But I do expect a Wii2 with *insert neat stuff* and 'jazz' with an optional side of what could be a bag of potato chips.

I don't have a DVD player, save on my computer. If Wii played DVDs and I amassed enough money for a TV and Wii, I would actually use it.

I'm fine with playing DVDs on my PS2, so I have no need of this. I can also watch DVDs on my laptop. After all these years, I have never owned an actual DVD player in my room. I did eventually buy a DVD controller for my PS2 though.

That seems like it would be a must, I've tried playing a few DVDs on my PS2 and several of the buttons seem to just make the disc reset, I can't figure out how to access the menu, etc... trying to control a DVD with a gamepad is awful.

But then the next time you need to take the disc out, put it in, etc... I always keep games in my systems. Then all I need to do the next time is just turn it on again... having to switch discs every time is tedious.
