I mean, it's NOT that rare a game. Lufia 2 is MUCH rarer and doesn't go for this much. The other clue is that there's always several dozen copies up on eBay. Nintendo put a lot of money into promoting this game and had plenty of copies on the shelves. Sure they didn't sell enough in their opinion, but there's plenty of copies to be had out there.

It seems like they're just abusing the fans at this point. I'm just glad I still have my copy.

I'll say this though. I want Nintendo to release the game on the VC now more than ever, if only to put a massive dent in this scam.

The fact that Nintendo refuses to ever release an Earthbound-related game in the West again has increased the hype surrounding the series quite a bit, I think, among its fans (and new people who discover it), which helps explain why prices have kept going up and up...

Is that enough to justify a new release here of something? I'm not sure. But it certainly has an effect on used game prices, particularly for the SNES release.

The thing is, they can put the game on the VC at virtually no cost to them. I'm simply speechless as to why they haven't done so yet, unless NOA themselves are secretly behind so many of the used copy sales on eBay and beyond.

Aren't there some kind of copyright issues preventing Nintendo from rereleasing it? Or is that Mother 3? Or both?

I think that's been mentioned about Earthbound, not so sure about Mother 3. But if they really wanted to re-release SNES Earthbound I'm sure they could find a way.

Then they could put the finished-but-never-released NES one up on Wii VC too.

I still don't get why they couldn't rerelease it, because they DID release it already, and never got sued about it at all.

Absolutely every single pop culture reference is covered by fair use. It was then and it is now.

And now for something the exact same.
