What is with the Return of the Living Dead series?

Its like they took a George Romero zombie movie and then made it really stupid. I mean I can grasp the concept of "The dead's brains somehow keeps working causing them to become zombies" pretty simple not so far out there that you can just ignore how unrealistic it it. But Return of the Living Dead um why exactly are people becoming zombies in that movie? And its impossible to ignore that people who have had their brains eaten can still speak and sometimes very plainly. And what is with the name, soooo obviously ment as a ripoff.

I don't know why the movies turned out like that, but I think it's fitting that Resident Evil, which was directly influenced by NotLD, turned out the same way: A series that started out excellently, that has now become nothing more than a bad parody of itself.
