This is a recording of a dial-up connection's initialization slowed down by a factor of 7. Wow, it's otherworldly. It could have been a track for Rez. Love the guitar solo near the end.

Come on, that's just a track from Dead Space! You can't fool me!

Now here's something to add. The "slow down" program also adds in some post processing, so this isn't truly what it sounds like at 7 times slower speed (for one, it would be lower pitched when slowed). Among what it does is "stretch" the sound to cover the gaps and harmonize the ends to fit the next part. It'd probably make pretty much anything sound like haunting whale music. It still is interesting to hear though, because nevertheless the modem sound is the seed of this.

Now there's the thing actually slowed down with no extra processing. Now it sounds like the hellish nightmare of Silent Hill, which eventually gets invaded by an alien war.

GR: I'd have figured you'd make the comparison to some of the more ambient background sound in Blade Runner, but that works too.

It sounds more like Steve Roach than Vangelis.
