Hiroshi Yamauchi is retiring. The man who ushered in the NES era is retiring from the Board of Directors, and doing it in a classy way. He's refused his Chairman's Benefits, which is supposedly in the millions, because he would rather see the money go to the future of the company.

    Here's the story on Gamespot.

    May he rest in peace.

I mean... happy... farewell... or something.

Hurray, more money for Nintendo! :D

More money go go into Nintendo's money-bin-which-they-never-open-to-actually-spend-on-games?

How much money do the actual game designers get payed anyway? Is Miyamoto rich, or just "getting by"?

The big dogs get paid the big bucks. Miyamoto is by no means strapped for cash. He probably has a lot of shares in Nintendo too. Yamauchi is also keeping all his shares and will apparently be kept on as a consultant. So it certainly makes sense for him to give up his benefits in favor of the company.

Yuji Naka is rich, so I imagine Miyamoto is as well.

Most game developers for any major companies rake in the cash. That will change in the coming years unfortunately as it becomes more main stream.

It's commendable of the old man to forgo his benefits. He would have made somewhere between $12-15 million. Nintendo won't do much with it, but it's the thought that counts, right?

Low-end programmers don't make that much, but yeah, top people like Miyamoto make a lot.

Well people making games for EA and other top companies often say, when asked, that in general people in the gaming industry that actually design the games really don't make that much. I've heard the mantra "don't get into video games to make money!" very often, so I simply had to ask if ANY of the game designers get payed the big bucks. I would assume if ANY of them managed to get the money out of the hands of the board of directors, it would be Miyamoto, but I'm not sure. Miyamoto really doesn't talk about that. Classy yes, but I want info!

They say that because normal programmers don't get paid especially well. Those top designers do, though... and Miyamoto? He's certain to, with his status and position in the company.

Programmers get paid pretty well. Unfortunately the standard game developer gets paid less than most and works harder than most for the joy of working on games. And they have to be really good. Dorks like me get paid too much to work or projects that are years late and tens of millions overbudget and don't do a lot of work because it is so horribly managed. Your tax dollars (and Lockheed "business practices") at work.
