The Japanese launch price for the PSP has been revealed and it's 33,000 yen, or about $300 US. That's exactly what I expected. Anything over $300 would have been suicide. But can it compete with the DS which is going to be half the price? Well, the system is several times more powerful than the DS and since it looks like both companies are going to be marketing their handhelds towards the older crowd, the PSP certainly has a chance to take the number one spot. Now all we need is a battery life number...

Yeah, that price is about what everyone except. Handhelds are a whole different enviroment than console, so it'll be interesting to see what people go for.

Um, where did you see this? The only recent article I've seen is this one... and they don't talk price here at least.

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/09/21/...08039.html

What it does say is that they compared this to the PSX when it came out in Japan vs the Super Famicom -- both sold well with the Famicom at 12,000 yen and the PSX at 39,000. So I'd say $300 is a minimum... I wouldn't be very surprised at all to see it end up at $400.

It was posted at the GA boards and will be up at all of the news sites tonight as soon as they get around to copying the thread's sources. 33,000 yen, you heard it here first.

I told you punks it wasn't going to be over $300.

$300 is still a lot for a handheld system... with the DS at half the price it should be interesting. Obviously they are going for different markets, but how interested is the PSP's market in getting a system like that? Oh, it'll do well because it's Playstation, but Nintendo has a very good chance. I doubt very much that it'll be like the PSX and N64. :)

Really, the biggest threat to Nintendo here is Nintendo itsself... as in, if they're stupid enough they can lose.

$300 dollu? Well, that's about what I expected, but I believe a certain someone here said Sony would never be that stupid...

Actually that certain someone said that the price would be at or under $300, but not over. And then certain idiots here said that it'll be $400 or more. And now those certain idiots are going to have to eat crow.

    Someone quote this, please.

Quote:$300 is still a lot for a handheld system... with the DS at half the price it should be interesting. Imagine if the PS2 came out at the same time as the N64 and costed twice as much as it. That's what we have here, at least on a technical level.

Quote:Really, the biggest threat to Nintendo here is Nintendo itsself... as in, if they're stupid enough they can lose.

Nintendo still hasn't even announced the launch titles and we haven't gotten any new info on software since E3 (aside from the tiny bit of Metroid info). They're already being stupid. But on the other hand they are launching the system with a demo (that you don't have to buy five games to get!) so maybe there is hope...

Combine that with reports of Sony having around 100 games for the PSP to be shown at TGS, and there's a bit of a contrast.

If we're looking at this from a purely technical standpoint that PS2 would destory the DS, but I think the handheld market is a totally different entity than the console market and people looking to buy handhelds are looking for something different than what they would if they were buying a console.

Also remember that the PSP isn't necessarily going straight for Nintendo's market. Sony's machine is all purpose. I guess it has it's sights set on Nokia's N-Gage market. ;)

Well that's based off of the fact that there's only been that choice to consumers in the past. Saying that all people want is the very thing that they've had no other choice but to have is a bit silly, don't you think?

Quote:Combine that with reports of Sony having around 100 games for the PSP to be shown at TGS, and there's a bit of a contrast.

    Tell me about it.

That's bullshit and you know it. If the PSP didn't pose any sort of threat to Nintendo's market share then the DS would not be coming out this year, and Nintendo wouldn't be saying that they're going to market the DS towards and older crowd. Nintendo also said that the PS2 wasn't in direct competition with the GC. Remember that?

Nintendo has announced more developers developing for DS than Sony has for the PSP, you know. :) I think it's something like 100 to 60.

    And I've been saying the

for a long time now and am not about to change now. It really is a different market... Sony's success is far from gauranteed. As I said, by far the biggest threat to Nintendo is its own bungling and misreading of what exactly consumers want...

No, the main thing Nintendo should be hoping for is that Sony screws up. If they do everything right Nintendo is screwed.

    Quote:RUMOR #3: The PSP will cost 33,000 yen--approximately $300.

    Source: UK game site SPOnG.

The official story: "Official pricing for PSP has not been announced, and any information in this regard is only speculation."--Sony spokesperson.

What we heard: The SPOnG article attributed the price to a statement by SCEE German Managing Director Manfred Gerdes, but did not say where he said it or in what context. Regardless, Sony officials have been aggressively denying the comments attributed to Gerdes, contacting numerous online media outlets to say "we appreciate you not reporting on and perpetuating this incorrect information on your Web site." However, a $300 price point for the PSP is in tune with numerous analysts' predictions, which could mean that Sony's PR effort is more damage control than debunking. Then again, maybe not.

Bogus or not bogus?: Officially bogus--until Sony says otherwise.

It's seems kind of odd that they'd shoot this down if it's in line with what they're shooting for, but then again companies will do this all the time. We'll just have to wait for official confirmation.

I don't put much of any trust in SPOnG though... hearing it's from them makes me quite suspicious. It is within the range that makes sense for the PSP to end up at, but coming from that source... I think we need to wait for an official announcement.
