Voices of a Distant Star - Great Rumbler - 27th June 2003

From a purely technical standpoint Voices doesn't seem like it would be that great an anime: It's 25 minutes long and it was made almost entirely by one man. It must be a low budget, fan-made project that doesn't have much going for it, right? Actually, Voices is the exact opposite.

Although the character models are somewhat crude, the animation is great. It also has some CG for added affect, although it isn't anything amazing it easily does it's job. But, what about the story? You'd think that the story would be very shallow, but in 25 minutes Voices weaves an incredible story full of details. Voices only has two characters, but they are very realistic and memorable.

The Story: Mikako and Noboru are two average high school students, but their lives are disrupted when an unknown alien force attacks Earth. Mikako decides to join the army and travel into space to fight the aliens, but Noboru stays behind on Earth. The only means of communication that they have are text messages that they send over their cell phones. As Mikako travels farther away from Earth their messages take longer to reach their destination. As years go by Noboru ages, but in space Mikako hardly ages at all.

All in all Voice of a Distant Star is a very good movie, whose only downside [if you can even call it that] is that it's short.

You could find it just about anywhere that sells anime. It was released over here a few weeks ago by ADV.

Voices of a Distant Star - Darunia - 27th June 2003

That title is so misleading...I thought maybe that you were telling us that CETI had finally received evidence of extraterrestrial life; a radio signl from a star or something. Way to go getting my hopes up. Jackass.

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 27th June 2003

How nice of you.

Had you taken to time to properly inspect the title of the thread you would have noticed that all the words [except "of" and "a"] were capitalised suggesting that it is a movie.

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 27th June 2003

Way, way too much to hope for from him.

Voices of a Distant Star - Darunia - 27th June 2003

*Squints maliciously*

Voices of a Distant Star - OB1 - 27th June 2003

:stupid:

Chuckle

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 27th June 2003

No need to make fun of Darunia. He does quite a good enough job of it himself.

Voices of a Distant Star - Dark Jaguar - 27th June 2003

Considering Darunia's severe case of xenophobia, I wonder if he'd only be happy to find alien life so he'd know what planet to turn into a giant glass marble from massive nuclear attacks (assuming that planet has a large amount of sand that is).

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 27th June 2003

He'd act out the typical alien invasion game plot.

Except we'd be the aliens attacking before saying hello.

It'd be funny if it wasn't true... :(

Voices of a Distant Star - Great Rumbler - 28th June 2003

Could we at least attempt to discuss the movie?

Voices of a Distant Star - Dark Jaguar - 28th June 2003

Nope, since only one person here seems to have seen it. Can't discuss what you haven't seen, so instead we make fun of Darunia. I'm sure everyone here (except Darunia) sees the logic in that.

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 28th June 2003

No one other than you has seen it.

Voices of a Distant Star - Darunia - 28th June 2003

You people all suck, really bad.

Voices of a Distant Star - Great Rumbler - 28th June 2003

Alright then, go buy the movie! Right now! I command it!!

Quote:so instead we make fun of Darunia. I'm sure everyone here (except Darunia) sees the logic in that.

We already have that going on in another thread, which just happens to have been also started by me and was a discussion about new episodes of Space Ghost, until Darunia came in. *glares at Darunia*

Voices of a Distant Star - Darunia - 28th June 2003

Considering Darunia's severe case of xenophobia,

Incorrect. Phobias imply fear...I do not fear aliens, neither extraterrestrial nor extra-USA.

a discussion about new episodes of Space Ghost, until Darunia came in. *glares at Darunia*

Yea, then I dropped da bomb by daring to not like most animé and holding a grudge about WWII. I admit, I was way out of whack about that. Then my retraction wasn't enough, either.

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 28th June 2003

Xenophobia isn't just fear of people from other places... its also hate, and hate implies (sometimes subconcious) fear.

Saying you don't like most anime is like saying you don't like most (American) TV shows... since they have about the same amount of variety...

How many animes have you actually seen?

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 29th June 2003

Other that Lupin.

And Pokemon and Dragon Ball stink, so they don't count. Especially Dragon Ball...

Voices of a Distant Star - Dark Jaguar - 29th June 2003

I think I like this smily...

Voices of a Distant Star - Great Rumbler - 29th June 2003

That smiley is awesome. Keep it.

On topic: Everyone should go out right now and by Voices of a Distant Star!! You can probably get it for like $15 or as low as $11 if you order online!!

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 29th June 2003

I'll get it in a week or something on directconnect. :)

Voices of a Distant Star - Great Rumbler - 29th June 2003

What's that?

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 29th June 2003

hub-based (run by people and all seperate, not one big network like Kazaa) filesharing program.

Voices of a Distant Star - Darunia - 29th June 2003

Xenophobia isn't just fear of people from other places... its also hate, and hate implies (sometimes subconcious) fear.

Wrong again, Doctor Stupid. Phobia: A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous.

Saying you don't like most anime is like saying you don't like most (American) TV shows... since they have about the same amount of variety...

Non sequitur. Who says I dislike animé because of variety. American TV shows are a huge, 70 year-old world...it's....it's HUGE! It's like everything, how can one even say they don't like "american TV shows". Animé, despite your best attempts at exaggerating it, is simply a form of Japanese animation, albeit a growing one.

How many animes have you actually seen?

I'll admit, only Lupin (and I liked it)...well, that and "Little Nemo"...that 10-year old gay kiddie movie. I suppose the dislike of animé stems from a fear of turning into more of a nerd (since it garnishes a Star Trek-like nerdism)...and...well thats all I guess.

Voices of a Distant Star - Dark Jaguar - 29th June 2003

You see Darunia, regarding the whole TV thing, that was the whole point. Having only seen two anime shows ever (Little Nemo as in Little Nemo the Dream Master? That happens to not be anime at all if you mean that.), you don't realize that anime is merely a visual style. Anime isn't JUST comedy or super heros, as animated American shows are, it's EVERYTHING! It has everything from a space opera, to sci-fi, to an in depth analysis of a single human, to a standard soap opera feel, to just a bunch of teenagers and their relationships. It's EVERYTHING, only it's all animated.

Yeah, ABF was a little off. Sure fears lead to hate, and are almost always the cause OF hate, but that's not what xenophobia means. It really is ONLY a fear of the foreign or alien.

Oh, I'd add that crazy little girl with the super powered weaponry to the smily list, but using this computer, I happen to have lost the link to the admin page. I'll get it back when I get my old machine working again, but until then I'll either need someone else to add it or for someone else to send me a PM or e-mail telling me what the admin page address is.

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 29th June 2003

First.

http://dictionary.reference.com/wordoftheday/archive/2002/09/08.html

HATRED OR FEAR OF FOREIGNERS.

I think that that means HATE OR FEAR, Darunia... you are wrong. And DJ, too.

Now I knew that without looking it up, but I guess I have to to prove it to you two.

Second. Yeah, you proved our point. You look like a total moron to say "I hate anime!" then say "I've only seen one kid's movie and a show I like". That makes you look SO STUPID... it really isn't smart.

Anime...

I watched Princess Mononoke (rented the DVD...), two episodes of You're Under Arrest, and an episode of All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku today. :)

Lets just say that those second two are ... a bit different ... from the first one?

Quote:Non sequitur. Who says I dislike animé because of variety. American TV shows are a huge, 70 year-old world...it's....it's HUGE! Ah, you know this because of your broad experience watching the genre!

Sorry, but no. Anime has a LOT of variety... comedy, sure. But its got sci-fi, fantasy, porn, drama, serious stories, etc... all the genres, except reality TV shows. :)

If you think that anime doesn't have variety or depth I highly recommend going and renting Princess Mononoke. That's a great movie. Not a great animated movie... but a great movie that happens to be animated.

As you'd expect from Miyazaki...

Voices of a Distant Star - Dark Jaguar - 29th June 2003

Ah, well I just broke the word down to it's component parts to define it. Doing that, it does just mean fear. But, languages change (stupid Babel curse...), so as such words change to stuff beyond their original meaning.

Voices of a Distant Star - Great Rumbler - 30th June 2003

Wrong. Anime IS Japanese animation. Anime ecompasses a very broad range of genres including: mecha, romance, action, adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, comedy, detective, porn, and many sub-genres.

Astro Boy is considered to be one of the first animes and it came out exactly 40 years ago, so anime isn't so new concept.

Just great. You're excuse for not liking it [depsite only having seen one movie and one series] is that you're afraid that watching more of it will turn you into a mindless fanboy. Hoo boy. Rolleyes

Quote:Having only seen two anime shows ever (Little Nemo as in Little Nemo the Dream Master? That happens to not be anime at all if you mean that.)

I think he means Little Nemo Adventures in Slumberland, which is sort of anime, it was directed by a Japanese guy and it's country of origin in Japan. But it's original language is English and it was written by Ray Bradbury. So it's kind of hard to tell.

Voices of a Distant Star - OB1 - 30th June 2003

Tony Shalhoub is great. I love "Monk".

And ABF, you really have to see "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Castle in the Sky", two great Miyazaki films.

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 30th June 2003

Isn't Kiki's Delivery Service more of a kid's movie than the rest of his films?

Anyway, yeah, I should see them...

Voices of a Distant Star - Great Rumbler - 30th June 2003

Quote:Tony Shalhoub is great. I love "Monk".

Yes, that show is awesome. I'm glad that they finally started airing the second season.

Quote:Isn't Kiki's Delivery Service more of a kid's movie than the rest of his films?

Well...yes, but that doesn't stop it from being a very good movie.

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 30th June 2003

Quote:Well...yes, but that doesn't stop it from being a very good movie.

True.

Voices of a Distant Star - OB1 - 30th June 2003

Kiki is actually my favorite Miyazaki movie (I still have several more to see, however). It's just so fun and so happy. Makes me feel like a little kid again.

Voices of a Distant Star - Great Rumbler - 30th June 2003

Uh oh!

Voices of a Distant Star - Darunia - 30th June 2003

Wrong. Anime IS Japanese animation.

...WHAT? That's what I said. But anyway, this thread boils down to my disliking animé. Ya know what, I like Lupin and would've been willing to look into more of it, but you've completely turned me away from it...even if just to spurn you, I will now refuse to watch anything but Lupin. Your sarcastic reply would be something akin to "you're only hurting yourself" or "your loss"....but if nothing else, it will've made all of your arguing to me pointless.

Voices of a Distant Star - OB1 - 30th June 2003

Oh no, GR! He's not going to watch any more anime just to spite you! Run away! Run far away!!

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 30th June 2003

Ooh! How very sad! He's not doing it just to spite us...

We're all very, very sorry for even thinking of saying the truth.

Quote: But anyway, this thread boils down to my disliking animé.

Still saying that... you really are a moron... I wouldn't ever say that I hate something like that when I've only seen one show! Its idiotic!

Quote: Ya know what, I like Lupin and would've been willing to look into more of it,

I think that that's about all we asked...

Quote:..even if just to spurn you, I will now refuse to watch anything but Lupin.

Smart decision there... yup... sure makes sense to me!

Quote:but if nothing else, it will've made all of your arguing to me pointless.

No, it just makes you look childish as well as dumb.

Voices of a Distant Star - Great Rumbler - 30th June 2003

Quote:Oh no, GR! He's not going to watch any more anime just to spite you!

Uh oh!

Quote:Anime is simply a form of Japanese animation

That sentence seems suggests that Anime is simply a type of Japanese animation, whatever, my mistake I suppose.

Quote:this thread boils down to my disliking animé.

For stupid reasons.

Quote:but you've completely turned me away from it

You weren't ready anyway.

Quote: it will've made all of your arguing to me pointless.

Oh no! Say it isn't so! I want that 20 minutes of my life back!!

Quote:even if just to spurn you, I will now refuse to watch anything but Lupin.

Have fun.

Darunia: I'm not going to watch any other animes, becuase you made fun of me!!

Great Rumbler: Oh well. *watches a bunch of cool animes*

Darunia: Ha! All you're arguing was useless!

Great Rumbler: So? *continues watching anime*

Darunia: Well...that means I won the arguement!

Great Rumbler: No, it means your stupid because you hate anime and you've only seen one series.

Darunia: *Declares War on Great Rumbler*

Great Rumbler: *ignores Darunia's taunts*

Dark Jaguar: And that's why you should never eat eagles! Their baldness will make you do CRAZY things!

Great Rumbler: ...

Voices of a Distant Star - OB1 - 30th June 2003

Haha, that does sound like something DJ would say.

Voices of a Distant Star - Great Rumbler - 30th June 2003

Yep! :D

...

...

...

...

...

Uh oh!

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 30th June 2003

Yeah, the way he changes the topic at random times to stupid subjects does get annoying.

Oh, and that whole conversation looks like it could have been ripped straight out of a series of posts... :)

Darunia needs help if he thinks sticking his fingers in his ears and singing 'NANANNANANANANA" will mean that he wins the 'arguement' about anime.

Oh yeah, it's official. We totally "pwned" this arguement.

Voices of a Distant Star - A Black Falcon - 30th June 2003

Oh yeah.

Voices of a Distant Star - Darunia - 1st July 2003

Ask yourself this...even though your powerful arsenals include the potently vile "making up Darunia dialogue", the merciless "Darunia is STOOPID!", and the oh-so-heartless "Let's band together to embarass Darunia"...ask yourself this:

-Did I declare a victory.

No...no where near that....so you can now ask yourself this:

-Why are we putting words in Darunia's mouth to embarass him...? He doesn't like animé, so what, is that a fucking crime? Around here it is.
