A very interesting article I found. It looks like after a rather exhaustive search, it's been pretty much confirmed that 2.4 ghz is the only model they ever made of this controller.

I wasn't aware there were ever rumors about a 900MHz Wavebird, but that would have been a very questionable design choice, as 2.4GHz wireless was already a well-established tech for several years by the time the GameCube came out, and 900MHz devices were so markedly inferior.
