ABF at the Movies - A Black Falcon - 7th July 2017

So, I watched the original PotC movie again, Curse of the Black Pearl, not long ago. I'd forgotten a lot about that movie, but I was right about Jack Sparrow, and how in the original film he's a leader, someone with ideas who pushes the group, and the plot, forwards. He does like to drink, but he's funny and competent.

However, in Dead Men Tell No Tales, Jack is pretty much useless most of the time. He causes everything bad that happens in this movie when, in a drunken stupor, he sells his magic compass for some alcohol. Then though most of the movie, the two new main characters drive the plot, while Jack's just there for comedy relief. This stays true all the way to the end. Jack never has a redemptive moment, some time where he makes up for his beer-induced misdeeds and becomes more of the man he once was. He's just following along, useless apart for as a joke...

But in the end, despite that, he is rewarded, the Black Pearl is freed, and he is its captain again. Shouldn't someone actually need to EARN something like that, instead of just being given it because you did good stuff years ago? It doesn't work. This movie was fun, but one reason why the original is better is that the plot doesn't have any major issues like this.
