Yay? I mean, I don't fault Nintendo for selling merchandise. That's fine. I fault Nintendo for pretending this is somehow a "loyalty reward" when it's just something you pay for. Also, I'm not at all interested in "subscribing" for completely random stuff I may not even want.

Yeah the article pointed out that other business this is similar to. It's a fine idea I suppose, for those who don't mind the random nature of what they're paying for. I'm just saying there's not much about it that says "loyalty program" to me. I hope you're right and this is just some separate thing.
