Yeah, Nintendo's mid '90s advertising was pretty great, and that one is no exception. It looks cheesy and dated now, but it's good stuff, and worked at the time. It's too bad that Nintendo hasn't had good advertising in years, they badly need it...

This is probably my favorite videogame ad, though. Such crazy stuff.

For Nintendo ads, I'm not sure if I can choose one, but for nostalgia value, that one VHS tape I have from Nintendo, the N64 one from right as the system released where they introduce the system and play Mario 64, Pilotwings, and Shadows of the Empire, might be my favorite...

That commercial up there is from the late 80's, not the mid 90's. The first clue of when it was made is WATCH THE COMMERCIAL!

I also love POLE POSITION! I really have a hard time figuring out which one is more in your face.

Notice how little they show the game. HaHa.. The game is nothing like that. That ad clearly wins the award for most untrue BS insinuated about a product. It was kind of fun though. :)

You mean it didn't LEAVE SKIDMARKS ON YOUR SOUL?

Rad Racer was better anyway :colbert:

90s ads are weird. I'm reminded of the Calvin and Hobbes strip where he complains that television commercials are just a weird barrage of loosely related images. I didn't remember it being that bad :psyduck: but I guess I wasn't the most observant child. Or adult for that matter.

I loved these too:

Oh, late '80s? I was thinking it was '90s... there is some clear continuity though, between that stuff and the later mid '90s "Play It Loud" campaign -- that was kind of like an amped-up, slightly older-audience version of earlier advertising like that.

And yeah, that (Atari 5200) Pole Position ad is pretty amazing.

Eh, ads are like that -- most videogame ads show very little of the actual game, in fact. They showed a few seconds of 5200 Pole Position in that ad, which is more than you'll find of gameplay footage in some videogame ads...

I've never been a big Rad Racer fan... it's probably better than the first Pole Position, I guess, but I'd honestly rather play Pole Position II for the 7800 than Rad Racer...

Also, ads!
MK1's is a classic.

Mario 3's ad has zero gameplay shown. Great ad for sure though!

And of course the Japanese LttP commercial is kind of crazy... crazy bad, that is. Dancing rap, Zelda ad? Yeah. (Also no gameplay, but that's okay.)

Finally, here's that N64 video I was talking about. Yeah, I still have my VHS copy.

etoven, we're not really saying these commercials represent the pinnacle of consumer information. We're saying these commercials are so over the top insane that they become awesome.

The Nintendo Power commercial was as definitively 80's as it could possibly be. It was about being "awesome, tubular, radical". Sunglasses! The 90's were more about "attitude". Things were still being "cool" but rather than being in your face cool, the characters in 90's advertising were more like "yeah, I'm so awesome I don't even CARE that I'm awesome, and I don't care what you think either".

I think it's kinda funny that back in the 80's and 90's, color saturated everything to the point that not even TV static could be black and white, STATIC was in color!

Nowadays, coolness means being as black and white as possible. Pure black, pure white, slowly erasing all trace of tint whenever possible, to the point you want to slit your wrists just so you can see color.

Yes! This one is great.

I was amazed watching that commercial as a kid.

GET THE POWER! - Weltall - 12th March 2014

So was I. I remember it more clearly than almost everything else from that period of my life. Whatever that says about me.

btw, I love watching commercials from the 80s and 90s. I bet you all do, too! Therefore:

28 hours of 80s commercials
15 more hours of 80s commercials
15 hours of 90s commercials

I don't think I could take that many retro commercials. I like http://fuckyeah1990s.tumblr.com/ though.

GET THE POWER! - Dark Jaguar - 13th March 2014

Yeah, I don't really like most commercials. I make some exceptions, but I don't think I could take 15 straight hours of them.

GET THE POWER! - Weltall - 13th March 2014

I didn't like most of them then, but some of them are so ridiculous that they've become more entertaining.

GET THE POWER! - Dark Jaguar - 13th March 2014

I can't be sure it isn't already in there, but I remember that Maxell commercial with Ride of the Valkeries blowing some guy back in his chair. That was pretty silly.

GET THE POWER! - Dark Jaguar - 14th March 2014

I still love Pole Position as a rare example of superliminal messages. That is, you aren't being tricked into it, or being convinced into it, you don't get a choice, you are ALREADY PLAYING the game.
