...huh... Yeah that's sure Mad TV level comedy there.

I don't see why everyone is making such a big deal about this thing. It's a monarchy, and if anything all of England should be embarrassed this is still going on. Just turn the palace into a museum and kick the queen out. She's just sucking up tax money as it is.

From what I've heard *but can't confirm* , The queen has one thing hypothetically that can be argued as a reason for keeping the status quo in the short run, Namely the possible costs and ramifications abolishing the monarchy would create, Such as making every piece of legislation and every international treaty made with the crown become void,The native Americans in Canada for instance would lose their legal standing as self-governed entities and also other special rights afforded to them under the First Nation act ( Part of which predates confederation ). If the UK abolished the monarchy not only would they need to re-found their country so would every nation connected in personal union to the crown.

The queen and her throne is what keeps my country politically married to the UK, Which may sound bad but we in fact benefit from the UK being forced by their own laws to legally back us in international disputes like the "Turbot War" with the EU , A rather bizarre event that most us never knew happened. * Anglo-sphere victory over euro-trash fishing trollers*

My idea , Is too not eliminate the monarchy but modernize it into an elective monarchy, which surprisingly has a history in England during the early Anglo-Saxon Kings and arguably "Oliver Cromwells" protectorate. Essentially the sovereign of our beloved commonwealth is elected and not chosen by birthing order, Which would essentially make it a defacto presidency only with more pomp and pageantry.

Seems most people in England like having a constitutional monarchy, who are you to say they shouldn't?

By the way:

Quote:Until 1760 the monarch met all official expenses from hereditary revenues, which included the profits of the Crown Estate (the royal property portfolio). King George III agreed to surrender the hereditary revenues of the Crown in return for the Civil List, and this arrangement persists. In modern times, the profits surrendered from the Crown Estate have by far exceeded the Civil List and Grants-in-Aid provided to the monarch. For example, the Crown Estate produced £200 million for the Treasury in the financial year 2007–8, whereas parliamentary funding for the monarch was £40 million during the same period.

I'm DJ, nice to meet you. I don't live in the middle east either but I still say they shouldn't stone adulterers. This isn't nearly as bad, just an inherited embarrassment.

It's good they don't make any money, but my question is where is that money they are "paying back" so much of actually come from? Is it tourist money, or what? Whether or not it's a good thing or something that could be vastly improved on depends on the answer.

ASM, I hadn't heard that sort of argument before. Still, it's not much considering the price of the queen still having some sort of authority. Technically they don't need to abolish ALL treaties the crown passed, just pass some legislation that says something like "henceforth all references to "the crown" will now refer to parliment", on top of nullifying all crown authority, whatever's left of it at least. Japan should do the same with their emperor while I'm at it.

Speaking of "here's how they should run their country", they need a proper freedom of speech and religion act in that country. Blasphemy laws aren't actually upheld any more, but they're still on the books, and currently their whole libel law system is terribly corrupt.

Let's put my criticism in proper perspective. I'm not saying make me the crown and pass this stuff, I'm saying this is what I think THEY should do and merely hope they agree and eventually make it come to pass themselves.

It's all the revenue from the royal family's property, which includes offices, retail, hotels, golf clubs, farms, parks, ect. The royal family surrenders the entirety of that money to the British Treasury and then receives a portion back for expenses and so on.

It's all there in Wikipedia if you want to know more.
