Okay.

A little while ago there must have been a Window's patch that downloaded automatically, because the next time I went to shut off the computer it said "Install Updates and Shut down."

Ok--fair enough.

But, now every time I go to shut it off, it says the same thing.

""Install Updates and Shut down.""

Discuss.

Updates to the updates? Seems like there's a new one every 10 minutes or so.

Whilst we're on the subject, does anyone know how to stop the damn Updater from automatically restarting your computer? I hate coming back to my computer after leaving it on at night to see everything I had open is now closed and a Windows message happily blinking to let me know it took the liberty of inconveniencing me.

There's nothing you can do, short of disabling automatic updates. The restart is to protect your computer, because windows becomes highly unstable directly after a patch is installed.

What causes it to do this? For as long as I have my computer, it'll always say "install updates and shut down" now?

Usually there's only updates on the first Tuesday of the month. It is true though that some updates require another update to be installed before it can install properly. I think perhaps one or two updates just didn't install correctly. There's just too many possibilities to really list any one solution though.

One possibility is to disable Automatic Updates and simply remember to check for updates manually every couple of weeks. Just MAKE SURE you do that though.
