New Spiderman is gonna be Black - etoven - 1st June 2010

Owwww. Shit...
Stuff going down...

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Dark Jaguar - 1st June 2010

It's too soon to reboot the franchise, too soon. Give us a decade.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Darunia - 1st June 2010

... you can't be serious... black Spider Man?

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - EdenMaster - 1st June 2010

While Don Glover is pretty good in Community, I'm not sure I see him as Spider Man. I like the quote there about "Why does Spider Man have to be white?" Well, the fact that Stan Lee created his character that way seems to be a good reason.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Dark Jaguar - 1st June 2010

White is not a character trait, it's an actor trait. I really don't care about that, and I don't think Stan Lee does either. It's not like they made a white "Black Vulcan" or a jewish Hitler. It's still a little soon for a reboot, but it could be good if it's a real reimagining.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Sacred Jellybean - 1st June 2010

I love Don Glover, and had no interest in this reboot until now. Badass. I probably still won't see it in theatres (unless the trailer blows me away), but I like this decision.

It doesn't matter what race Peter Parker belongs to, as long as the actor gets the nerdy teenager part down. Based on what I've seen Glover in, I think he can do this in spades. I'm no comic-booker purist (or even reader, for that matter) so I guess it matters less to me.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Darunia - 1st June 2010

Fail. I hate it. No go.

Let's see them make a movie about MLK Jr. and recast him as a white guy.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Sacred Jellybean - 1st June 2010

You're being deliberately obtuse and you have to know how stupid of an analogy that is. Spiderman and its themes have nothing to do with race relations and the color of Peter Parker's skin is pretty arbitrary in the scheme of things.

Considering how bad (and fucking hilarious) Spiderman 3 was, they have no where to go but up.

Edit: I should have read the link, it looks like this is just a bunch of fan-wishing from twitter members. I still think it'd be a cool idea, though.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - A Black Falcon - 1st June 2010

Green Arrow was originally white but they made one of the later ones black, so why not other superheroes too?

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Dark Jaguar - 1st June 2010

Agreed. I love John Stewert Green Lantern, his secret identity is host of the Daily Show, BAAAZING!

Ya know someone once showed me a Spider-Girl comic. It was some sort of alternate reality "what if" series where, well, Spider-Man is a girl. Really THAT would have more of an effect on the storyline than making him black as that means other characters might actually need to be altered, like Mary Jane, and apparently that's a fairly popular series. I don't see the big deal here.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - lazyfatbum - 2nd June 2010

This means spidey's jokes are going to be Will Smith'd

Dr. Octovious: With these mechanical arms I can interact directly with the quantum generator.

Spiderman: PSH oh hell naw you wouldn't see me touchin that, please. Look at you, crazy and white with robot arms dayum, even mother Teresa would know you're gonna be a villain, psh you never see a villain put on skin-tight clothes to show off the abs, hell naw, they gotta wear robot suits and hide, shit

Iron Man: ...

audience: OH NO HE DIDNT

Hollywood would never do a black character without making it 'urban' unless it's a serious drama, and even then.

The Spiderman reboot should have spidey in 9th grade. Black or white, and show him becoming a complete nerd that's fascinated with his camera.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Darunia - 2nd June 2010

You're being deliberately obtuse and you have to know how stupid of an analogy that is.

Ya that was a bad analogy. But if I'M OBTUSE, you're SCALENE!

Spiderman and its themes have nothing to do with race relations and the color of Peter Parker's skin is pretty arbitrary in the scheme of things.

Sure. So why stop at Spider Man? Let's recast every iconic American hero and role as different races. A black Clint Eastwood? A Vietnamese John Wayne, maybe? (After all, why can't we have black cowboys? A la Will Smith?) And Darth Vader will be Hispanic! Indiana Jones is half Philipino--didn't you know? My point is that these are established and beloved franchises and I for one DONT like them being rebooted at all... let alone changing the ethnicity of the main star. To cite examples, I H A T E the latest reboot of Bond... I loathed the woeful Star Trek reboot... and I never watched the newer Battlestar Galactica, but when I heard that they recast roles not just to different races, but from gender to gender...? They're NOT being original or creative here, they're JUST BEING POLITICALLY CORRECT for FUCK'S SAKE! Peter Parker has been established in a plethora of media forms as a white guy. If he had been established as a black guy, then LEAVE HIM BLACK. But he was not. Don't go back and change a hundred years of canon because it suits the prevailing liberal Hollywood winds!

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Dark Jaguar - 2nd June 2010

Now you're being acute.

Darunia, you focus a lot on race and gender there, but did you ever complain about eye color or hair color? How about height, weight, voice? I mean either get upset about all of it, or none of it.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Darunia - 2nd June 2010

Now you're being acute.

Aww...haha! Thanks, you're a-cute too!

Darunia, you focus a lot on race and gender there, but did you ever complain about eye color or hair color? How about height, weight, voice?

Race and gender... like when I complained about the new Bond? And when I complained about the poor casting of the new Star Trek? I understand that because I tend to vote conservatively, you're all going to pin me as a backwater redneck racist. And if I happen to not think that Spiderman should be black, that's only going to fuel that image. But I don't care. Spiderman should not be black because he has been white for.. I don't know how long, but for decades.

And I HATE THAT THE NEW BOND IS BLOND.

Let's be SUPER liberal next year and make James Bond a homosexual, Ethiopian, "undocumented", wheelchair-ridden person of color suffering with Downs syndrome! And he stutters, too... and he's a cross-dressing manic depressant... there, you ought to love that idea, you get to suck off all your feel-good minorities with that idea! Isn't that a fresh reboot on the tired, stereotypical, machismo Bond of old? In fact, dump that whole secret agent shit... violence is bad. Make him an inner city community organizer who rescues puppies who are down on their luck, and then gives them to orphanages! He's a NEW BOND for the 21st CENTURY!

"JAMES BOND: LICENSE TO TICKLE!"

COMING SOON FROM DARK JAGUAR PICTURES

BOND IS BACK...

I mean either get upset about all of it, or none of it.

Who's going to make me? My opinion clashes with yours, so now you demand unilaterally of me that I change it? I spit on you and your goody two-shoes feel-good bleeding heart rainbow-colored Spiderman.

BTW I historically hate all efforts to reboot franchises.

1.) New WILLY WONKA: SUCKED
2.) New Clash of the Titans: SUCKED
3.) New Bond: SUCKED
4.) New Star Trek: SUCKED.
5.) Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: SUCKED.

But when I say... "Spiderman should not be black!"

NOW I'VE CROSSED THE LINE!

He shouldn't be Chinese, or a woman, either.

Or maybe he should be in your eyes.

Let's rename him Spider-person, so we don't offend women.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Dark Jaguar - 2nd June 2010

Actually I haven't bothered with any of those reviews, and you're being an idiot if you think those are decisions I'd have made. As I said, it's just too soon to "reboot" Spiderman.

By the way, Star Trek wasn't a reboot. It was an alternate past. That's basically the plot of the movie. The "normal" Star Trek universe exists alongside it. Heck they could easily do a crossover story. Shatner and Nemoy are going to be dead at some point, and new actors will be needed anyway. Heck looking at Nemoy it's clear he's getting too old for this stuff anyway. Oh, and I liked it.

No it's not really that you hate reboots. It's not that you just say that this or that actor isn't doing a good job. It's that you said "Spiderman was always portrayed as white". When you say that, it sounds like you are calling "white" a character trait.

Really? You hate that modern Bond is blonde? Why? I mean the modern ones suck anyway (why should I care that someone's, gasp, charging a little too much for water, when previous villians were going to POISON a water supply), but that's the thing you pick out?

You never complained when new Link characters went blonde. Link in the first few games was brown haired. Peach and Zelda used to have red hair. Personally I do think that's kinda lazy, but I'm not saying they ruined the CHARACTER because they changed a cosmetic attribute, I just don't care about that.

What we're saying is, well, stop caring about something so trivial and pointless, because yes, that DOES sound racist, because being obsessed with cosmetic issues that are pointless is exactly what racism is!

And no one here is trying to say we "have" to do this for political correctness. Here's the thing, political correctness doesn't exist for normal people, it's ENTIRELY a POLITICAL phrase, for politicians? You have this idea of imaginary people running around demanding that characters start representing "minorities", but that's not the case. Ever think maybe the choice for a black actor had NOTHING to do with that?

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Darunia - 2nd June 2010

/yawn..
/wave off Dark Jaguar.
Your felonious accusations bore me.
Let's agree that you think Spiderman can be any ethnicity because he is merely a character, and I think he should remain white because he has always been white. Just like Uhura should remain black, because she has always been black. There's nothing racist about that. These are ESTABLISHED CHARACTERS. Don't go changing them.

and DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE STAR TREK MOVIE.

DON'T OPEN THAT CAN OF WORMS.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Great Rumbler - 2nd June 2010

Quote:3.) New Bond: SUCKED]

Yeah...I''m pretty sure this is wrong.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Darunia - 2nd June 2010

I'm pretty sure YOU're wrong. I have loved and adored James Bond since I was in 5th grade. I know the first fifteen or sixteen movies almost line by line. I have most of the original Ian Fleming novels and I have read them. I know them inside and out. I am certainly entitled to my opinion, and that is:

1.) James Bond is a COLD WAR ERA SPY. In Reboot, he is POST-COLD WAR. Judy Dench even makes a point of saying to him that he WAS NOT AROUND DURING THE COLD WAR.

2.) He is no longer a spy. He is now just a gun-toting madman who rushes around avenging bitches he plowed and blowing things up.

3.) Whereas while they changed Bond actors several times, the Bond universe remained the same: actors/tressess like Lois Maxwell, Desmond Llewellyn, Bernard Lee, kept the series all united in a continuum... nobody could keep Sean or Roger from aging or moving on, but when everything else remained the same from movie to movie, it minimized the change. In Reboot, the only thing that is the same, as far as I recall (and I may be mistaken,) is that Judi Dench is still M... and she has only been M since GoldenEye... and at the beginning of GoldenEye, Pierce is on a Cold War-era mission to sabotage a Soviet facility... yet since then, Judi has declared to Daniel Craig that he wasn't AROUND in the Cold War.

4.) Apart from the name James Bond, there's little else in common with the previous incarnations of Bond. He has a nice car and bangs blondes and brunettes.

Big-shit Hollywood knows that they can stampe 007 on any big-budget, special-effects, booby-packed film, and people will go see it. They'll rave about it. And you bought into it.

So there.

RIP
GOOD JAMES BOND MOVIES:

1962-1987.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Great Rumbler - 2nd June 2010

Sorry, but the two latest Bond movies are awesome.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - alien space marine - 2nd June 2010

Spiderman has had non-white comic book incarnations created specifically for foreign markets like India, Some marvel super-villains and heroes have had black incarnations like "King Pin" in daredevil.

Nick Fury was white , Was even portrayed by David Hasselhuff on tv in 1998, Samuel Jackson gave him a negroplasty in ironman 1-2.

Its just a new take of the same story , Kind of like how you have samurai swash buckler movies doing Hamlet.

I do agree with Darunia on one thing

Daniel Craigs James Bond is not really 007, But rather a bastardized clone that is a brooding psychopath with no wit or charm who goes around sulking with a constipated look on his face.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1Eo0qsmGU1g&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1Eo0qsmGU1g&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Casino Royal atleast had this scene to dull the pain.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Darunia - 2nd June 2010

I admit that the last two weren't as bad as the worst of the Brosnan films, while still being vastly inferior to the bulk of Connery-Moore ones.

The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day come to mind.

Like most things, however, this boils down to a difference in opinion.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - alien space marine - 2nd June 2010

The TWINE Villains sucked and its main reason the movie failed, It is notable that it was the farewell performance of Desmond Llewelyn the original Q, He was Q in every era of Bond except Daniel Craig.

He also proves that God is a jerk, Since he died in a car accident just as he was beginning his retirement.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Darunia - 2nd June 2010

Ya. God sucks. Llewellyn was a cool dude.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - lazyfatbum - 3rd June 2010

The new bond movies didn't cut it for me either, I liked Goldeneye a lot but honestly I want the oldskool back, even if its trite. I want the villains that have peculiar abnormalities and the top secret weapons and gizmos that aren't just hypothesized designed but shit that just sounds cool and could hypothetically work.

Our Navy is testing a laser cannon, no joke. It can shoot down planes, how badass would it be to have a JB film where the main villain is creating stealth and invisibility for the black market and he himself can disappear like a ghost because he spent billions of dollars in placing thin layers of plating under his skin? "The Man with No Reflection" would be a great title too because it could be talking about Bond or the villain. I mean, I just pulled that out of my ass and i'm more interested in that premise than seeing the last Bond film.

There could even be an underground of black market buyers and sellers who self-mod and create things like permanent lens mods so you can see in every spectrum, reinforced bones and spine so you can move like the bots did in Surrogates (Bruce Willis movie worth seeing), fiber-optic hair that's functional as data transfer but also just looks really fucking cool. Borg-mod underground, think of all the quips!

Villian: Give up Bond. This arm is reinforced with a material stronger than diamonds and uses micro-pneumatics which allow me to crush a man's skull with the same exertion it would take you to hold a cup of tea.

Bond: You're buying and selling humanity just to fulfill a vendetta. Obviously, it didn't help you get a grip on reality.

:FuckYou:

But I agree, its all watch Bond do a hot chick, lose the hot chick, go nuts and pew pew pew.

What about a fat man in Denmark who figures out how to send electronic code through time, so that you can effectively send an email to the past, for example. Becomes drunk with power and creates a miniature empire that threatens the world, selling the future to the highest bidder. He sends himself emails when he was growing up and makes himself a success. He could even send an email to himself when confronted with Bond so that even though he didn't set-up a trap, he just did in the past, so now it exists when it didn't before. Bond gets curious, wonders if he should send himself a message in the past to change the present, reaches moral dilemmas. If you could send a message to yourself in the past, what would you send? James Bond in, Time Waits for No Man OR Present-Tense (tense, get it? lol)

amirite?

I feel for you, Brother, but real Bond fans don't count anymore in the formula. If they can get any big hunky guy (to get women interested in going to see it), and any number of slutty boobs, mixed with a stupendous and over-the-top amount of violence and explosions, then all the fair-weather Bond fans, who only care about the elements listed above, will keep buying tickets. Similarly to how Star Trek fans got FUCKED over with that horrid, twisted piece of misery by J.J. Abrahms.

Bond: You're buying and selling humanity just to fulfill a vendetta. Obviously, it didn't help you get a grip on reality.

Lolz. In true Bond fashion.

But I agree, its all watch Bond do a hot chick, lose the hot chick, go nuts and pew pew pew.

Sucks, don't it? Some of the older ones had really good plots. The Spy Who Loved Me leaps to mind as one of my personal favorites. They don't get much better than that... Jaws, Barbara Bach... Kurt Jurgens with a superior breed of villain... huge battle at the end about a mammoth oil tanker... nuclear submarines... save the world... microfilm, Bernard Lee as M. Lois Maxwell as Moneypenny, and Desmond as Q. No sign of Judy Denchm anywhere.

amirite?

IDK about some of those far-fetched plots, but the main gists to your jive is right on.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - lazyfatbum - 3rd June 2010

Well, I like the sci-fi approach as long as its kept within reality. Moonraker does this well but what about Spectre? ...that would be a great way to really rejuvenate the series.

I know Dr. Evil has done the 'cat thing' to death, but a well done Spectre would be the bees knees. Remember when Bond got plastic surgery to make him look Asian? shit like that is okay in my book, it's a top-super-secret-no-budget-is-too-large organization, so laser glasses, extensive and perfected plastic surgery and explosive tooth paste are all fair game.

And what's so far fetched about sending data faster than light towards the center of the universe so its echo appears in the past? It's plausible! Think of it, there could be a giant array in the jungles somewhere where the data is sent out in to space and we could have a battle happen inside a large hadron collider!

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Darunia - 3rd June 2010

what about Spectre? ...that would be a great way to really rejuvenate the series.

I emphatically and unreservedly agree.

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Sacred Jellybean - 3rd June 2010

Quote:Sure. So why stop at Spider Man? Let's recast every iconic American hero and role as different races. A black Clint Eastwood?

You mean, like, Clint Eastwood in blackface? Eastwood is an actor, not a character. :)

Quote:A Vietnamese John Wayne, maybe? (After all, why can't we have black cowboys? A la Will Smith?)

Same principal, but to give you a serious answer, if you're trying to make the stories historically accurate, it would be difficult, but maybe with the right backstory a minority cowboy could be interesting.

Quote:And Darth Vader will be Hispanic!

Darth Vader is mostly just a mask, not human, with a monotonic, robotic voice. I guess you could give him a hispanic accent, but considering that your example is from an iconic movie series (rather than a comic book mythos that has existed for decades and been explored many different times in many different ways), it'd be a little jarring, since we only have one example to compare it to (and because I can't seem to imagine it without an over-the-top flamboyant Don Quixote voice, but maybe I just lack imagination).

Of course, Star Wars is almost certainly set to be remade some day, so maybe in another 50 years, if Hispanic folks become the majority, this will be likely. :)

Quote:Indiana Jones is half Philipino--didn't you know?

As long as he has the right masculine physique and can balance badass with intelligent professor, I don't see why not. Also, having only seen Raiders of the Lost Ark, once, as an adult, I suspect that I don't have the same attachment to the series as you, so maybe I can't relate.

Quote:My point is that these are established and beloved franchises and I for one DONT like them being rebooted at all... let alone changing the ethnicity of the main star.

Lib'ral hollywood came'n TOOK MAH FRANCHISES!! *shakes fist*

Quote:To cite examples, I H A T E the latest reboot of Bond... I loathed the woeful Star Trek reboot... and I never watched the newer Battlestar Galactica, but when I heard that they recast roles not just to different races, but from gender to gender...?

I don't know anything about any of these and am not really qualified to add to the discussion.

Quote:They're NOT being original or creative here, they're JUST BEING POLITICALLY CORRECT for FUCK'S SAKE!

Isn't it more creative to divert from the source material? :) It doesn't necessarily have to be a mindless P.C. affront to come over and rape your church and burn your wife, it could be an artistic decision. Questioning the motive for such a decision, I guess, would have to go to the guy who brought it up, a writer for some noname scifi site I've never heard of. But I wouldn't be against it, and I like the idea of Don Glover.

Quote:Peter Parker has been established in a plethora of media forms as a white guy. If he had been established as a black guy, then LEAVE HIM BLACK. But he was not. Don't go back and change a hundred years of canon because it suits the prevailing liberal Hollywood winds!

Go watch/read the plethory of other media forms, then. A new interpretation won't make them turn to ash. Just ignore it and move on, especially since you already have a recent enough movie series to draw from. I don't see the problem. Confused

New Spiderman is gonna be Black - Darunia - 4th June 2010

I see that you revived that argument Sacred, but I'm done with it.
