The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - A Black Falcon - 14th January 2010

Because it needs a thread, of course.

Anyway, so far, the game's mostly good, very much like Phantom Hourglass but with a somewhat better story and less choice in where you can go (because instead of being able to sail freely around you're stuck on the tracks). Because you don't need to go up the tower each time the fact that you're returning there each time means less, and I think I'd actually call that a bad change. Also, I've heard that the game is harder than PH, but apart from what I'm about to complain about below I haven't really noticed that. The music, graphics, and gameplay are all good, and it's just as fun to play as PH was. Mostly a good game.

So, what's the real problem? The flute. Specifically, those songs you need to sing on it in time with the spirit things. I'm at the second of those, with the spirit in the snow area, and I got there several days ago but can't get any farther because it's pretty much impossible. I might just have to give up here, I don't know... it's bad enough that it's a music game thing with timed button presses, and remember that that is something I'm HORRIBLE at, but beyond that, in order to press the buttons you have to BLOW INTO THE MICROPHONE! It's just ridiculous. Oh yeah, and the game gives you no indication of what you're doing wrong or how well you're doing until you suddenly fail after the third time you're supposed to play the notes. Cruel. So yeah, I'm stuck there and don't know if I want to keep trying... it's just ridiculously hard.

I didn't have much trouble with that part. I haven't played it in a while, but I did at least make it that far, and slightly farther (to the corresponding temple). The pan flute is neat, but yeah, it can be a little hard to time the notes just right sometimes. Still, I don't think it's ever taken me more than three times if even that many.

Oh, I've failed several dozen times already, probably... as I said, doesn't exactly make me want to keep playing the game. I mostly like it otherwise, but yeah... not fun.

I finally managed to beat it, after thirty-something tries... had to blow hard into the stupid probably malfunctioning microphone which keeps either not registering anything or having trouble registering it or something causing it to sound several times or fail to sound at all, which causes failure... it's pretty hard to get the stupid microphone to work right. That might be my system, I don't know, evidently such problems do exist.

Of course, it's made worse by how bad I am at games like that and that I'm not exactly great at the 'blow on the sensor for a sustained amount of time while also carefully moving the stylus across the correct notes' thing. Quite tricky and extremely annoying. This is harder than any music in any Zelda game ever, I think... and I don't mean that as a good thing.

Anyway, the game itself is fun enough, so I'm glad that I can finally get on with it again -- I'd been stuck at this point for days now...

... You know, ST has no online play, while PT had it... I know the online mode wasn't amazing, but still, why remove it? That's kind of stupid...

I guess they figured there was no reason to recreate a minigame that already existed on Phantom Hourglass and they had no ideas for a new minigame.

I haven't touched this game in a while as I've been playing Super Mario 64 on Virtual Console lately (for some reason, I never owned it and only rented it a couple times back in the day). I'll get back to it soon though.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - A Black Falcon - 16th February 2010

Yeah, I've been playing Knights in the Nightmare, so I haven't been playing it either... it's an okay game, but not amazing. Nothing that makes me want to play it right now. I'm sure I'll finish it eventually though, it is fun after all... :)

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - Geno - 16th February 2010

Yeah, I feel the same way. It's somewhat of a rehash of Phantom Hourglass, so it has a "been there, done that" feel to it. Nevertheless, it is fun, so I'm sure I'll return to it. It's not the big Zelda game I've been waiting for though, so I'm holding out for the next Zelda game on the Wii.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - A Black Falcon - 16th February 2010

Oh yeah, it's so much like Phantom Hourglass gameplay-wise that it's pretty much a direct, barely altered clone... and the things that were changed weren't all for the better, like removing free-roaming sailing in favor of on-rails (literally :)) paths only.

The plot's better than PH's (Zelda for instance is a pretty good character this time instead of entirely irrelevant), sure, but that doesn't make up for the nothing-special gameplay. PH isn't one of the best Zelda games, after all... it's okay, but not great.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - Geno - 16th February 2010

It's mostly just filler until the next major console Zelda game.

Agreed about the limited roaming. If people thought the sailing aspect of Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass was annoying, Spirit Tracks will perhaps give them a greater appreciation of it. At least you could go wherever you wanted on the map, taking whichever route you wanted, without having to reverse direction or retreat to a town every time you ran across a Phantom Train. There was also the beauty of being able to move AROUND obstacles, as opposed to the two directions you can move in Spirit Tracks, forward and back. I'd much rather ride Epona across Hyrule Field.

On that note, I may still think that the plot's pretty poor, but TP's gameplay is just so unbelievably great that it's in my top 5 GC games for sure now... has been since somewhere around late 2008 when I finally got around to forcing myself to play it again. Had to start over last summer (after getting to the final boss) and haven't been playing that much, but last week (when I played last) I had just reached the Snowhead temple, with the Yetis... now that's a great Zelda game. The story is not good, but the gameplay is exceptional. (Still not quite a match for OoT though... :))

I mean, handheld Zelda can be great. LA is one of the best games in the series, and I loved the Oracles games too. But somehow ST and PH just don't match up to those three for some reason, in my opinion... they're good, but not truly great.

Oh yeah, and I liked the sailing in WW. Sure the water looked boring, but sailing was fun. :)

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks - Geno - 17th February 2010

I'm also one of the very few who liked sailing in Wind Waker. I also think I enjoyed Phantom Hourglass significantly more than Spirit Tracks, though yeah, it wasn't one of the greatest in the series either way. Link's Awakening is a damn good game. I need to give it another shot soon as I never actually beat it back in the day. I had played about three quarters of it back in the late 90's and for some reason I just stopped then. I also need to pick A Link to the Past back up as I never quite completed it either. I've given up on the NES Zeldas as they're way too hard for me (especially since I'm playing on a computer) and they're underwhelming compared to subsequent installments. Sure, I appreciate them for their innovation and whatnot, but the sequels are just vast improvements.

I didn't mind the story of Twilight Princess, but yeah, it was no Ocarina of Time for sure. The gameplay is magnificent, though, and the environment is probably the best we've seen in the series (rivaled by Ocarina of Time; Twilight Princess just barely wins for having superior graphics, an advantage of being made eight years later for a more powerful system; nevertheless, Ocarina was beautiful for its time and even holds up well by today's standards graphically). Ocarina of Time simply had the best story, one of the best environments, and it introduced the gameplay mechanics of the 3D Zelda era. It's just simply a classic in every sense.

Majora's Mask is heavily flawed, yet still enjoyable. The save system is a pain in the ass (though I found a loophole to make it slightly less annoying: before you load your saved game, if you're afraid you'll screw up, copy your saved game file to the other file as a backup) and the time limit can get frustrating as well. It sometimes gets annoying having to relive the same events over and over. Those flaws aside, it's pretty enjoyable and has some of the hardest boss battles in the 3D Zelda era. (I fucking hated that fish from the third temple.)

I need to check out some of the Zelda games I missed. I've never played the Oracle games and I've barely touched The Minish Cap. From what I heard, Four Swords/Four Swords Adventure isn't really worth looking into unless you have someone to play it with. Then there's these things:

No thanks. :)
