Need Mac help - lazyfatbum - 23rd December 2009

Anyone savvy with Macs, leme know.

I'm running 10.3.9 and apparently I cant update unless I buy a new operating system. Is there a way to do it free? I dug this thing up because A.) Ryan needs his old hard drive back and B.) I'd like it to be in decent condition for my move to California. But dear Christ I know nothing of the Apple G4.

Any help will result in the offering of valuable cookies.

What part of California are you moving too, Orange county?

Need Mac help - A Black Falcon - 23rd December 2009

I think Apple makes you buy OS updates, I don't think they're free...

Apple is evil. They're no better than Microsoft and are worse in some ways, darnit! :)

Need Mac help - DMiller - 23rd December 2009

10.4 would be the only OS you could get since I think it was the last that supported the old G4s. It's even possible that 10.3.9 is the last upgrade option. Do you have a specific reason for wanting to upgrade because with a computer that old I wouldn't upgrade the OS at this point unless it was really necessary?

Need Mac help - lazyfatbum - 2nd January 2010

Ah, dammit. Well the upgrade, even if its overkill for the old lady, will do me better than buying a new computer. So Mr. Miller, what do I do? is there a link to a download? Do I have to rummage through an online store? WAT DO I DO?

Not orange county, well not that I know of yet. This move has been in the stages of 'just about to happen' for the past year, so its gotten quite confusing.

Apple does not make you pay for updates.... And unlike Microsoft, major new releases are free as well. And DMILLER is correct, you cant go any further on a G4 Mac. You have to buy an Intel mac if you want OS panther.

You mean "cat name" versions? Those you seem to have to pay for according to the apple site. I think they offer some good discounts for upgraders though.

Apple can no longer charge money for it's OS because of a recent law suit. Because OSX is now based on FreeBSD Linux the license agreement says it must be free. The only thing they can charge for is OS addons. Per the law suit apple must make a addon free version of the OS available. Its there, but Apple tries to hide it on their site.

Need Mac help - Dark Jaguar - 2nd January 2010

Link to it.

I've heard not word one about this lawsuit. I know it's based on a version of unix, but as near as I can tell, the "addons" are pretty much the entirety of what users actually care about, the overall interface. No one cares about just getting a naked kernel, and it won't help lazy too much.

You should try Google sometime DJ.
Here you go lazy...

I never heard of that lawsuit either. Not saying it didn't happen, but most people just buy the new versions so I don't think people would really care about just getting the kernel.

Anyway, Apple doesn't sell 10.4 anymore, but I found it on Amazon and eBay. It's surprisingly expensive for such an old OS, but I think it's because it's the last OS that some people can install on their computers so it's still in high demand. If you do some searching you might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.

Amazon
eBay

Did anyone click on the link I provided? It's right there, for free direct from apple..

Need Mac help - lazyfatbum - 3rd January 2010

hahahaha dear god, etoven, what the hell?? if that link works, i'm going to blow you. I'm going to blow you so hard your spine will invert. Thank you with extra exclamation points! !! !!! !!!! !!!!!!! (!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Need Mac help - lazyfatbum - 4th January 2010

Okay, no BJ for you Etoven. That link provides a 10.4.1 patch that updates 10.4.0. But I need 10.4.0 in order to do that.

Any possibilities of a link to that?

On the other hand, what's the deal with getting a linux system? I know zero about them, but I hear they are free and downloadable and work on macs. I'll have to do some reading to figure it out, but what's your take?

DMiller/ Apple told me: "We dont make that disk anymore good luck finding it, ha ha ha, we have no soul." and then ebay had it for 200 bucks and I died a little. There's a torrent of 10.4 and then talk of using different programs in order to make it functional but fuck if I know anything about that.

Need Mac help - DMiller - 5th January 2010

It looks like you could possibly get it for less than $100 on eBay based on the link I provided. I actually looked to see if I still had a copy of it but it doesn't seem like I do. You could install Linux but the OS is one of the main reasons people prefer Macs so you don't see too many people installing Linux on a Mac, although it is done on occasion. Sorry I don't have anymore options for you.

Need Mac help - lazyfatbum - 10th January 2010

It's ridiculous. Why would they go out of their way to make their products so worthless? Is it an ideal that "they cant update their systems so they'll have to buy a new computer, yar har har!"? I even got Windows XP on a IBM 200 mhz computer.

Thankfully this computer cost me around 300. But what about the people who paid full price for a Macpro G4? i cant even imagine how they feel being told they simply cant update it because the "disks aren't made anymore."

Linux on the Mac looks like the open source community crapped out a Gooie and made it Mac compatible. I sure hope to god there's a gnome theme with all the OSX sexiness.

Etoven, that link was to a PATCH, not the full OS. Of course patches are free.

And no, I'm not "googling" for "free Mac OS". I'm pretty sure I'll go to jail in Mexico if I downloaded from whatever site popped up.

¡Usted es pirata!

Collecting patches is not piracy.. Downloading adobe after effects cs2 and using it to make this...

[MOVIE]http://www.tcforums.com/etoven/Werewolf%20Scrap%20Version.flv[/MOVIE]

or obtaining an illegal copy of photoshop cs3 so I can add extra tits to naked girls like this...

<img width="50%" src="http://www.tcforums.com/etoven/Images/New-Moon.jpg">

That would be piracy and a complete violation of my ethical code.
I can't even you would even suggest such a thing. I am a artist and do have standards.

BTW, I don't think any software pirate has ever set foot in a "Mexican Prizen Rape Gang", they just steal DVD's from their local video store until they have a respectable collection.

Mother fucker. Every time i see one of your multiple breasted women I burst in to tears laughing.

So i'm taking my G4 in to have its hardware updated and then install one of the new operating pussies.

Has anyone sold their kidney before? i'm nervous because I used to wet the bed when I was younger and I dont want to sell a kidney to an old woman and then have it returned after I upgrade the mac.

You realize if you take in your computer to simply have the motherboard swapped out with an Intel board, they will also have to swap out all the ram, the power supply, all the drives, the video card, your sole, and all of your money.

Assuming that an Intel board even exists that will fit in your G4 shell.
Shit you might as well buy a new computer.
