Al-Gore got a award for making a "inconvenient" movie, Obama got a award for not being like Bush.

One thing I heard recently that was trying to explain it was saying that it was yet another bit of Bush-bashing by the Nobel committee... they gave Carter and Gore Nobel prizes while Bush was in office, so here's their third insult towards one of America's worse presidents.

Put that way, I can understand it... though yes, he really hasn't done enough yet to deserve this, I think. Maybe in a few years, if things go well... but as is, not really. Oh well, Nobel prizes are just voted on by some Norwegians, it's not like it's an open process or anything, so ignore it if you wish. :) (But I do like the Bush-bashing explanation... :))

I think full congratulations are in order for Barack Obama. Bravo on winning the Nobel Peace Prize! Another feather in your cap!

I'm willing to bet that the people who actually risk their lives and security every day to make real inroads for world peace probably agree with you!

This whole situation is hilarious. I'm sure it came as much as a surprise to him as it did to everybody else - Obama even said he didn't deserve it. But, well, he has the award now, there's not really much anybody can do about it. It's not like he can give it back or anything. The best we can do is point out how curious it is that a group of Communists/Socialists gave the award to a fellow Communist/Socialist. Ha ha

Which people do you mean there? The hundred thousand plus Iraqis dead because of Bush? The Middle East situation, where peace efforts stalled because of Bush administration inattention? Afghanistan, where Obama now has to make a very, very difficult choice because of how horribly the Bush administration managed it?

And how about how he ran the Constitution into the ground in his efforts to get around, undermine, and ruin it... and he treated the UN and our European allies exactly the same way. And you wonder why they'd be so overjoyed to see him gone? Honestly?

The point is, Bush was horrible for our national security. Invading Iraq made things worse, not better. Angering Europe made it harder to get things done, not easier. Ignoring the Israel/Palestine issue and the UN were not exactly helpful decisions. And mostly ignoring Afghanistan was a major mistake. Obama is trying to change all of those things, and to the international community, obviously, just the change in tone coming from the the US now is such a huge relief that the Nobel committee thought Obama was worthy of this.

As I said I agree that he probably hasn't deserved it yet, but I can see why they'd do it for sure.

Indeed... he would have had to be nominated eleven days after taking office in January. As a result this couldn't be based on anything he has done since getting elected, just the fact that Bush is gone and that America's tone internationally is so much better now.

This whole situation is sanimous with Obama winning the automotive X prize by stealing his neighbors bike and submitting it to the contest.

ABF: What I meant to say is, the real reason Obama was even nominated is because he's Not Bush. There are people all over the world who risk their lives and livelihoods in real, physical effort to achieve peace. I'm talking about aid workers in Darfur, the Iranians who rose against their tyrant this summer, the people who travel to overpopulated Indian hellholes so that they can administer medical care--yet, the award is given to a man whose greatest contribution to world peace was inviting a white cop and a black professor to sit and have lunch in the same room together.

Of course, if it's awarded to blowhard propagandists (Al Gore) and terrorists (Yassir Arafat), the Peace Prize obviously is nothing more than a tool by which people can grind political axes. Given that, Obama's win isn't surprising at all.

Oh, the fact that Henry Kissinger won a Nobel Peace Prize says everything anyone needs to know about how valid the prize is -- it isn't. Kissinger is a mass murderer, pretty much, bloodthirsty and responsible for hundreds and hundreds of thousands of deaths... the prize doesn't mean that much.

I also agree Yasser Arafat absolutely did not deserve one. He's nowhere near Kissinger's level, but he was pretty bad, and should never have won it. I understand why they gave it, as a political reward essentially, but it was not deserved.

And also, as I said, "Not Bush" is actually something very, very good for the world...

Well, it depends on what level you look. Sometimes they've given it for those more direct things, sometimes for policymakers farther away from the direct action... but those people can, when they want to, have a greater impact than any single person working on their own to help. And that's what Obama seems to have won it for, beyond "We really hated Bush, here's one more finger in his eye!" -- the hope that he will do things to make the world better. Will he? Will he do things to really deserve this? We'll see...

Oh, and yes, they should have waited until he (hopefully) actually does things to deserve it before awarding it. I certainly believe that. But even so the concept is good.
