King's Bounty - Great Rumbler - 21st December 2008

Aside from The Witcher, I've been playing another gem from Eastern Europe lately called King's Bounty, which is a turn-based RPG heavily inspired by the Heroes of Might and Magic series.

The game has you playing a character tasked by the king to restore order to the kingdom. You're given some gold, some troops, and a mission and sent out the front door. From there, you can choose to follow the main quest right away or mess around for hours doing side missions for the citizenry while handing out whichever brand of justice is most appealing to you.

The main world is a stylized, not-drawn-to-scale overworld that your character runs around in. Enemy characters wander around and will chase after you if you happen to stray too close. The battle screen is a large grid that you move your troops around on. Your troops range from wild animals, to knights, to wizards and all sorts of other types of units and are generally purchased from various places.

Units of a particular type of stacked together as a single unit that increases in power as the number of units in the stack increase. When the unit takes enough damage, some of the units die and the unit decreases in power. You can have up to five different units at a time and the number in each unit is determined by your characters leadership points. As you win battles, your character gains experience and levels up.

The graphics and art style are both really great and are complimented by some decent music. The translation of the dialgue is done well, although are few lines here and there seem oddly wooden and sometimes there are punctuation errors.

It's $40 and it's a great game. So go out and buy it, because I know that you haven't.
