An Explanation for Spore - Dark Jaguar - 2nd November 2008

It appears they actually had a team division, and "cute" won out. Now I'm fine with a game looking unrealistic, but the extent of "cute" apparently didn't stop there, it went into the gameplay. A few years ago, the game was actually far more in depth, and they spent the long delays all this time effectively REMOVING content!

I still don't have Spore. I've seen how it actually plays now and a lot of my past interest decayed. It's sad really. It isn't Will Wright's fault it seems, but other forces in the company.

I can certainly hope that, if not resolved via expansions, a "Spore 2" (or a full rename, perhaps actually calling it "Sim Everything" as they originally wanted to) would be far more faithful to the original vision.

I was never hugely interested with either version of Spore, but still, I do agree that the more scientific version could have been pretty interesting, while the game as shipped is just too simplistic to be worth bothering with. At least if it were a complicated sim (with some kind of systems in place to make it accessible, but with the serious side there as well for people who spent the time to learn it) it'd have had that depth and accuracy. As it is it has neither... too bad.

They tried this with SimCity sort of, with the kids' line that started with SimTown... and younger children liked SimTown, but not anyone who'd loved SimCity or SC2k's depth. Here we can't compare things because only a very few people have played the first version, but still, I wonder if things aren't similar...

SimCity 4 is pretty darn deep itself, and I'd venture to say it has more depth than the second one. Societies is a town that forces itself to work no matter what you do (for the most part) so it doesn't really feel very deep or challenging.

I bought it the day of the launch, I really was pumped for this game and it was pretty disapointing...needless to say its no longer installed on my computer...

EA ripped the game apart in hopes to make a great children's game.

Yeah, Societies is the spiritual successor to SimTown, pretty much. It's a huge step down from any of the four major SimCity games, certainly.

*waits for GR to come in and say how good Societies is once patched*

More than likely the 'full' game was stripped in an effort to release little updates and sequels until the end of time. Truth be told, it was always a light hearted game in presentation with kiddie themes... they just took out all the epic greatness.

Yeah as I said I never had a problem with the Pikmin style graphics. It was the lack of depth I miss out on.

Wait 4 months, then they'll release the Epic Greatness patch.

Because it is. It's a somewhat different focus than the previous Sim City games, but is still a fun game in its own right.

Spore was fun game to play through once, but unfortunately very forgettable once the initial excitement ended.

So even you can't defend Spore? It really must be weak, then... :(

It really is too bad, the concept was so great...

I'll defend the space age part and the incredible amount of detail in the creation process, but it's definitely a missed opportunity to make something truly great.

Want a better evolution game? How about this one...

Or maybe SimEarth. SimEarth was cool. :)

Is that guy the Highlander?

Hues of Pikmin abound. That game looks amazing, any game with peeing is worth investing in. It's also prime material for Wiiware.
