As I mentioned in my review, lots of the gameplay mechanics added to SMB2 made it into sequals. Picking stuff up, while done in a more limited fasion, became a regular move for Mario in later games. I prefer SMB3 as my all time favorite 2D Mario, but SMB2 is a great game and I don't think SMB3 would have been as good without the various additions SMB2 brought to the series.

Winter Games is awful. (It's funny that the Atari 2600 version looks like it's actually decent, though...)

I noticed he used Donkey Kong Country ice level music. :)

My favorite part was about how people in movies (throwback to The Wizard) who are only pretending to play video games are actually playing Winter Games. I loved the ending as well. All those warnings on the back of the game cartridge only served to give the Nerd some ideas. :FuckYou:

Good luck with that... but it's not looking too likely, is it? :(

I think 99.99% of the world would prefer hoverboards over the Cubs winning the Series. I sure as heck would. I'd take hoverboards over anything from Back to the Future II, including the the Sports Alamanac and the Delorean time machine itself.

Street Fighter 2010 for the NES, with small mini-reviews of Fighting Street (TGCD) and Street Fighter II: The Movie: The Game (Saturn). Good stuff... in short, if you like brutally hard 8-bit games with nice graphics and okay gameplay but a murderous difficulty level, you might like it.

He beats the game. If you ever wondered how good the AVGN is at NES games, here's one more example of just how good (and/or persistent) he is.

Spoony (know him?) also has a review of the game, from a little while back... http://spoonyexperiment.com/2009/06/25/street-fighter-2010-the-final-fight-review/

That game looks like a lame cash in on the franchise , The original Street Fighter looked good for a game made for 1980's gaming computers.

The street fighter movie was so bad that it was good!

Ah Fireball Island, classic '80s boardgame... a friend of mine had that game, I remember thinking that it was great fun. Yeah, luck counts for a whole lot, but it was great fun, what with that giant fireballs and all. :) I think my reaction was a lot like his at the beginning of the video, 'woah, that game's awesome looking!'. And it is. :)

I haven't heard of some of the board games he's reviewed, but... I want 'em! I did own Mouse Trap back in the day though. I didn't even know how to play the game; I just liked activating the trap. That was so much fun, yet so ridiculous.

Most people hate it, but a few people are actually apologists for this game, mostly, I think, because of how early it was -- it was pre-Zelda and all. Still, that's not entirely an excuse for all those flaws...

(Oh, I think the Save and Load things are actually an internal state save, so you can ... um, load the game before dying pretty much... but yeah, it does seem kind of useless. Why can't you just load that file from the main menu?)

I get why that feature exists and it actually seems sorta practical. It saves time from seeing the inevitable Game Over screen and having to go sit through the opening credits if you know you're going to die.

Ninja Gaiden, particularly the first one. It's here because it's really hard, not because it's bad... and for that it wholly deserves it. Also, it's a great episode, with some pretty well done training sessions and such... good stuff. The ending is funny too. :)

But yeah, Ninja Gaiden 1's last level is just unfairly hard. Between the insane difficulty of the level itself and the very difficult bosses at the end and that it sends you all the way back when you die, I haven't finished it either, despite also getting to the second form of the final boss. It's just too hard, and it stops being fun eventually.

The second game I have beaten though, and it's a lot easier than the first one really. First, the last level isn't nearly as hard as the last level of the first game, and second, it doesn't send you all the way back to the beginning of the level when you die at the bosses -- you start from about midway. It's still cruel, but not quite as cruel. Also it keeps the 'bosses you beat you don't have to fight again' thing, which really helps. And I don't think any of its forms are as hard as that second form of the first games' final boss...

As for the third one, yeah, because of the continue limit the NES version is no fun. Either play the Japanese Famicom version, which has infinite continues and password save, or the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (SNES collection) version, which also has infinite continues and password save. Just don't play the US NES version unless you like to suffer.

(On that note, sure the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy doesn't have perfect audio, and the "parallax" elements in the third game are gone, but the added password save system makes up for that I think... games are better with saving. It's too bad Ninja Gaiden Trilogy is so hard to find and somewhat pricey.)

official AVGN thread - Dark Jaguar - 4th February 2010

I don't think Ninja Gaiden 1 is all that hard. The 3rd one is much harder. The first one certainly doesn't match the raw difficulty of other games he's reviewed, like Battletoads, Silver Surfer, and Double Dragon 3.

Hydlide... Comparing it to Zelda is barely accurate at all. I mean there's no strategy. You literally just hold down attack next to things until they maybe die.

official AVGN thread - A Black Falcon - 5th February 2010

So you've beaten Ninja Gaiden 1, then? Wow, congratulations, that's a really hard game... as I said I gave up at the second form of the final boss too, it's just too hard when you also have to redo the entire level every time.

Of course those other games you mention are also very hard, but Ninja Gaiden 1 is definitely in or near their league.

Also sure Zelda is much more complex than Hydlide, but Hydlide is definitely a precursor to it in the action-adventure or action-RPG genre or whatever genre you put them in...

official AVGN thread - DMiller - 5th February 2010

I beat the first Ninja Gaiden as well, but it was the only game that ever caused me to throw a controller. I don't think it's as hard as Battletoads, but it is easily the hardest game I have ever beaten.

official AVGN thread - A Black Falcon - 5th February 2010

It does have infinite continues, at least, unlike Battletoads.

official AVGN thread - DMiller - 5th February 2010

Actually, after watching the video I realized I never did beat that final boss. That brought back some bad memories since the part he kept dying on was the part that made me throw the controller.

At that time Anybody could develop and release a game on the Atari without paying zip to Atari, The company only made money off of their own 1st party games which every other company bastardized with knockoff clones, No wonder they ended up broke.

official AVGN thread - A Black Falcon - 20th February 2010

Yeah, the fact that Atari didn't think of the licensing system -- that's something Nintendo came up with -- definitely was a key cause of the crash. Had Atari actually had some control over the games on their system, had they, Coleco, etc. been making money from third party releases on their consoles, I think that the crash may well have not been as bad... but they hadn't thought of it yet, and the licensing system didn't exist until Nintendo brought videogaming back and used it as a key part of their model.

It kind of looked like a game cartridge at first, Apparently the discs didn't have unlimited play and if you watched the same movie over again enough times it would start to degrade to the point that it would be unwatchable, RCA claimed that it would take 400-500 viewings before a disc was used up.

Only 100,000 were sold and the format was discontinued in 1984, Originally CED was supposed to be released in 1979 and if it had come out then it might have actually contended better against VHS/beta max.

Pretty good episode... getting a Pong console sometimes would be cool. Not one of the ones that's the two-wire-screw type connector only, though, I don't exactly have a TV that can deal with the screw things... we never did actually, even our first TV, which was a 1985 model I believe, was standard cable wire input only.

There actually was an Odyssey 200 in a place around here last year, but I didn't really consider getting it. I'd only get something like that if I had money to burn on that stuff, I doubt I'd be playing it that much... particularly considering that a lot of them were 2 player only...

Why do you guys think this guy is funny? This guy isn't funny. He's not even ironically funny. There is literally nothing humorous about the Angry Video Game Nerd. I've been to funerals funnier than this.

What's wrong with you people?

The appeal is seeing him get frustrated playing bad games.

official AVGN thread - Weltall - 22nd March 2010

It would be, if his frustration was in any way humorous.

It just gives me the vibe of "well, shut the fuck up and stop playing the goddamn thing, then".

I admit he has become repetitive as of late, Some of his past work was quite funny, The Atari 5200 review stands out in my mind.

He's also often very insightful and says some really intelligent and interesting things. It's there a bit in the AVGN section, but probably better found in his other work. For me, I like him for his sheer passion in videogames, movies, filmmaking, and whatever else (board games, etc.). He's amassed a pretty scary amount of geek knowledge and I don't think I've ever seen anybody so dedicated to sharing his geekiness with the world. And yeah, he is of course really funny.

For sure - he's giving the AVGN character a break for a bit, he says, and focusing on other stuff.
