Would you be interested in a live call-in interview with a Capcom employee? - demon - 21st March 2003

Hey guys, I recently posted the following at G4's forum, to get public demand. But I also wanted to see what some of the wiser gamers thought about this. :)

-------------

Before I begin, let me just cover my bases by saying NOTHING HAS BEEN FINALISED ON. That being said, I'll tell you what I'm trying to do. As the title suggests I'm trying to set-up a web stream radio broadcast of an interview with a Capcom employee. The catch? YOU GUYS are the ones who call in, and ask the questions.

Here are the details I've arranged so far.

- I've got a relatively new Capcom employee (currently he has been there for around 2 months) to agree to do the interview.

- I've also arranged for someone to conduct the interview and stream it through their DEDICATED server. :)

- The time frame I'm looking at is within the next month or so, which should give me plenty of time to wrap up any last minute details, and promote the event publically.

- It'll work by one person (who for now, wishes to remain annonymous) calling the Capcom employee. Then they'll give out their own HOME phone number, you call them and the calls will be conferenced. (There won't be a 1-800 number though, and the person you'll be calling lives in the US. Tennessee actually.) Note, this method has been tested with another interview. It works fine, and everything is completely hearable.

- The event will take place on a Saturday or Sunday probably around beginning at around 4PM-5PM EST. (This hasn't been finalized on, so the time is subject to change.)

- I'm hoping to have the thing done within the next month. So as you can imagine, the questions will GENERALLY be about getting into the industry. Seeing as how the Capcom guy will have only worked for them for 3 months. BUT, at the same time, you can ask any question so long as it is PG-13. :)

- The web broadcast will be at 4KB/s so dial-up users can tune in. And while they won't be able to call-in (what with one phone line and such) you can ask questions in an IRC chat. *BUT* not all IRC questions will be answered due to time limits.

- The whole interview will probably last from 30-60 minutes of call-in time. So be sure to have your question(s) clearly planned out before calling... if you call. Time is very valuable.

- For those of you who can't tune in, the show will be recorded and you can then download it. But no, there won't be a transcript made. (Well unless one of you guys make it. :))

So what do you guys think? Would you listen to it? Would you want any specific changes made? I'm trying to see how the public receives the idea before going through with it full force. :) Please vote in the poll, so I'll know your opinion.

What does this Capcom employee do? As you well know, there are lot of different jobs you can have at a videogame company. Does Capcom USA even have a dev team? It certainly sounds interesting though.

Hmm, well I know at least Square USA has a dev team. That's the ones who made Secret of Evermore (the only game I can think of where the entire world didn't use a single currency, and you actually had to bother finding money changers). I figure there's enough people at Capcom with knowledge of various fields of programming to form a small dev team, what with the stuff they need to know for translating (it's more than translating, it's also graphical cencering and adding new US only features :D).

Sounds like a very interesting idea. Good luck to you. I hope you have success in pulling it off.

Laser Link: Well, that is a VERY good question. I'm trying to get an exact, detailed, answer from him. :) Here is what he said at the one month job point. :)

"I basicly help with the production of the game. Help design if you will. I dont do anything technical really."

so I assume, he works as a tester, he also once told me that the developers, of the game will often test him and his co-workers with a level sayign "I bet you can't beat it" and their job is to beat it. :)

Btw, do you know what happened to my post count? :) It used to be much bigger like in the thousands! Of course I haven't posted here much (I mean the vbulletin or old UBB boards.) But i posted at the original Nurb boards so much.

Well I'm going to listen when ever you do it. Sounds cool.

As for your post count, it went BOOM about a month ago and they were all erased. If you bug Weltall or WhiteFleck or someone else they'll put it to whatever you want. :)

Oh, ok. :) Thanks for the heads up. Heh, there is still a lot of info to work out, because so far the biggest stream this guy has done off his server is 100 people at 4kb/sec. It went flawlessly. But if we have 3 times that or more (which is what the two of us are anticipating, assuming you get mentioned on GameSpot, or IGN, or somewhere... don't forget this has never been done) we don't know how the server will handle it.

Here's a question. Does he have any involvement in translating, or if not that, can get ahold of someone who does? I wish to know a few details on the translation process, like do they concentrate a lot on American public opinion to decide what's censured or changed to be more understandable to US audiences, or are they more concerned with accuracy?

I don't know, I can ask him or you can ask him when this thing finally goes through. :) But, I'm not going to lie to you... I don't think that is his department.

Ah, well hopefully he knows people in that department and can ask them then.

Dark Jaguar: Sorry for the delay, but just got your answer. :)

As for your question, I'm trying to understand what it is he is asking. Do we translate from English to Japanese or vise versa in like dialog such as censoring and content? I think I read that question right As far as I know we write up the all the dialog here in our studio and someone else translates it into Japanese as close as posible making it sound as acurate as it can be. I'm pretty sure if there is something we say here that means something compleatly different there it will probably be changed to fit the description better. Now I'm not a hundred percent sure on this and I dont want to give you any wrong information but that is what I can deduct so far.

A few of my co-workers and myself get feedback from the Japanese testers everyday about bugs they find while playing the game. We do have a translator here that tells us what they found and we confirm their bugs and write it up and send it out to all the programers and designers. They then fix the bugs. That is a little QA type work I do.I hope this can answer your question.

Well that's interesting info on a whole lot of levels, but that actually didn't answer my question :D.

First, I gotta say this. Does this mean Capcom USA is making games themselves? There's so much info I garnered from that I'm quite confused. I'm wondering what deparment he actually works in. It seems he writes dialog for games in English and they get translated to Japanese, but I don't see why they would be doing that unless Capcom USA is making games. Maybe I misread something.

My question was regarding translating Japanese to English actually, if he happened to work in any departments concerning that. I was wanting to know if they favored accuracy more or making things sound good to a US audience more.

Well here is the official statement about his job:

Quote:I started here at Capcom by applying for the position and sent in some level designs and character creations. They gave me an interview that went pretty well and I was on my way to a great job. As a production specialist I help in the design of video games by doing a little creative work on levels, character behavior, character text, entity placement, some bug testing and coordinating the bug database from the feedback we get from the testers over in Japan. I have also done a little bit of storyboarding for cut scenes and edited the entire "dummy" dialog for the cut scenes. Unfortunately I do not do much in the way of modeling...yet.

What games has he worked on? It seems obvious now that Capcom USA actually does some game work. Are they solo projects or does Capcom USA essentially just aid Capcom Japan in making games?

I'll save that one for the radio show. :)
