A Black Falcon Wrote:Anyway, because modern-day people expect things like large breasts, giant muscles, big characters, skimpy costumes, etc, games have them, even though they make no sense at all from a world design standpoint or from a "people from a place like this would actually look or act like this" standpoint. Taking some liberties is fine! I want magic in these games, female characters to have significant roles, etc. Some other things just need to be better justified...

Talim and Xianghua both have fairly small chests. Raphael and Voldo are not at all muscular or physically large. The fighters are varied in many ways.

The outfits...I'll give you that one. They're not what you'd call battle-suitable nor modest.

But hey, like you said. That's what the market wants. There is bound to be a lot more word of mouth between male gamers about Sophitias massive breasts than there is to be for Sophitia's historically accurate suit of armor.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - A Black Falcon - 14th November 2007

Quote:The outfits...I'll give you that one. They're not what you'd call battle-suitable nor modest.

Battle-suitability and historical accuracy are the main issues here, really, and the ones I'm talking about decisively fail both of those tests. Modesty is something that depends pretty much completely on culture, though -- humans have no built-in sense of modesty that I know of, it's all learned. (Otherwise why are there some jungle and desert tribes in which people never wear clothes, period? They'd wear something if modesty was genetic...) That fact, along with "we can design whatever we want because it's a game", are why why the costumes pretty much conform to modern-day cultural ideas of costume, not 16th century ones or anything else: they represent the culture of the game's creators, not of the supposed era they represent.

They usually make an attempt with at least some a character's costumes, in most cases, at least. If you want greater accuracy many of the characters DO have an option. Not all characters, and not in all games, but there are some more accurate options... the more monster-like characters like Voldo have no 'accurate' costumes of course, but Voldo isn't exactly based on a historical culture. These costumes are sometimes heavily modified -- short or partial skirts instead of long ones for female characters (though really female warriors would probably wear outfits much like male warriors, for protection, and not women's clothes... but they decided that wouldn't look as good and, more importantly, doesn't show off skin, so out that goes for most costumes.), etc.

Quote:Talim and Xianghua both have fairly small chests. Raphael and Voldo are not at all muscular or physically large. The fighters are varied in many ways.

Sure, there's an exception for every rule... but the rest? Sophitia (who, other than the extremely large breast size, remember, also had a child between Soul Calibur I and II, which in the real world often changes things) and Taki are the least realistic (seriously, before the mid 20th century Japanese women had very small breast sizes on average...), but looking at the rest they're mostly not much more plausible; are those really 'small' or just 'small in comparison to the REST of the cast'?

Quote:But hey, like you said. That's what the market wants. There is bound to be a lot more word of mouth between male gamers about Sophitias massive breasts than there is to be for Sophitia's historically accurate suit of armor.

Actually her third costume in the original Soul Calibur actually involved a full set of armor, I think... that might be her only one though. :)

So okay retro SSBM stages will be making an appearence. The first confirmed one is the Zelda 2 stage. I always liked that one. I'm not one of those freaks that insists on playing ONLY on the totally flat showdown stage, no items, Fox ONLY. I like actually having fun, screw tournaments if they are going to take that away from me.

Um, considering recent investigations into Japanese crazy fads, I wonder/fear the contents of one of the capsule characters... will they be some sort of trio of cat peoples?

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - A Black Falcon - 30th November 2007

I like items.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - EdenMaster - 30th November 2007

Yeah, I play with items turned on at all times.

As for the stages I want back...Temple would be one. I'd also like Rainbow Cruise, N64 Dream Land, Onett, and Corneria.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 30th November 2007

I'd like Mute City and that other F-Zero level.

Come to think of it, where's Captain Falcon?

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - EdenMaster - 30th November 2007

More importantly, where is GANONDORF!

I was talking this over with a friend of mine. He was wondering about the fairly boring updates the Dojo has had recently.

If you'll recall, the game was SUPPOSED to launch 3 days from now. They've probably exhausted all the big announcements they wanted to make and now were stuck hearing about <i>spectator mode</i> and <i>widescreen support</i>.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 6th December 2007

I wouldn't be so sure EM. Companies tend not to do big and dwindle down to small stuff. That just loses interest. No, more likely they've got some big announcements but they are told to keep them under their lid, and in the meantime to make it seem like they are constantly updating, boring stuff, except this!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/howto/technique/technique09.html

Here's the thing everyone's been wondering about, how the smash balls work. Seems you don't just automatically do the move when you get the ball, you whack the ball until you get it, get an aura, and use it strategically from there. Also you can steal it from someone who hasn't used it yet, and someone who's been beaten badly enough can get a "pity" smash mode bestowed on them sometimes.

Captain Falcon represents an entire series that I haven't heard about yet, whereas Ganondorf would just represent a series that's already accounted for.

Oh and EM, keep in mind that Ganondorf, if they do include him, will likely play like a totally different character than you remember. Don't worry about that too much though, I mean you didn't burn your Melee disk did ya?

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Sacred Jellybean - 6th December 2007

.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 6th December 2007

Ahahahaha! Did you make that on your own? The image source is an upload to TC so that's what I'm guessing. Brilliant!

Yeah seriously it's like these tournament peoples only consider the game worth playing if everything fun about it is removed.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Sacred Jellybean - 6th December 2007

Nah, I actually saw it on another forum. Linking it to its original source wasn't working, so I just saved and re-uploaded it. Either way, I love it. :D I used to have to sit through my buddies arguing back and forth whether to turn on items, and whether they were an indication that one person was a better player. I could go either way, personally, but I wouldn't want to play in either mode all the time.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - EdenMaster - 6th December 2007

Yeah, I'm not expecting Ganondorf to play the same way. Honestly, I just want him back since he was my favorite. Fox was my favorite in the original SSB, Ganondorf was my favorite in Melee, and I'm sure I'll have a new favorite in Brawl. I would just like him back because I think he is an awesome character :D.

And no, I still have Melee of course.

But I also know that I can't possibly go back to SSB after Melee. Methinks I'll have a similar issue with Brawl.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 7th December 2007

Ya know this wouldn't be an issue if Nintendo put the proper coding "hooks" in the game to support downloadable content for future expansions to Brawl. Imagine down the road the game only getting better with characters added in, with all the time to balance and tweak them they need.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - EdenMaster - 20th December 2007

I have no words.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - A Black Falcon - 20th December 2007

Awesome... :D

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 20th December 2007

That's exactly what I've been waiting to see! I knew he'd have a costume but wow that exceeds expectations.

Imagine if Pyramid Head WAS in this game, and Kirby ate him...

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 20th December 2007

<img src="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/characters/images/kirby/kirby_071220g-l.jpg">

Who's this? Dixie Kong? No wait that's not hair, it's a banana! Is it Diddy?

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - EdenMaster - 20th December 2007

Yeah, it's Diddy.

The other thing I found interesting is that it seems Kirby can inhale and copy all three of the Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon.

Not entirly unexpected, I suppose, but still fun.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - big guy - 27th December 2007

snake kirby is amazing.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - lazyfatbum - 4th January 2008

The beard tells me that it's awesome.

Pyramid Head Assist Trophy? :D

*black screen*

James.... honey................

*loud screams of pain by thousands of men, women and children as Pyramid rapes Nintendo characters while ripping off their skin*

something tells me it would be a bit too much for SSB. It's surprising there's no mention of Resident Evil though, like a Hunter AT or being able to throw a vile of the T or G at someone to make them zombified or tentacly and cause you to lose control of them as they just go random and attack anyone, little cartoon thought bubbles above them saying "Itchy. Tasty." Or a plagas vile... get hit with it and you turn Mexican, seems more frightening to me.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 4th January 2008

Well that skin ripping thing was only in the movie, and he tends to only bother raping bizarre mannequin monsters (I mean you can't really rape someone in the middle of a fight). I'm pretty sure he'd be the ultimate slow but powerful guy, wandering up, very hard to hit, but when he manages to get a hit with his sword or spear, crazy damage. Also, I dunno, insect swarms.

They did put Jill in the Marvel vs Capcom game. Her "abilities" consisted of being surprised by zombies and monsters showing up behind her, and dodging them while they attack the other guy on the screen instead. She could apparently be attacked by monsters in this way "at will".

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - lazyfatbum - 5th January 2008

Yes but it's the ESSENSE of PH that we're looking for, a hulking rape rape w/rawr and big run scream gross dodge.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Sacred Jellybean - 7th January 2008

Woo-hoo! Onett, Corneria, Yoshi's Island, and Rainbow Ride are all returning! Also, Brinstar, but I'm more excited about the former 4. Now we just need Hyrule Temple from the N64 version, and both F-Zero levels from Melee.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - lazyfatbum - 8th January 2008

All good news, but..... nothing from new Metroid games?

No Aether? No Tallon 4? :(

wer is gewd metroid nooz for me?

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 8th January 2008

There's Zero Suit Samus, a big charge super smash, and a level where everyone has to fight inside a small safety corridor. I'd say you got all you could really ask for.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - lazyfatbum - 8th January 2008

Horse pieces!

I want Dark Samus! A Space Pirate! Big Ridley kill your face! I HOLD YOU PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE!

*dramatically falls to the ground opressed infant-style*

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 8th January 2008

Dark Samus is a costume at best. Fighting game history should tell you that much. A space pirate? Like, just some random pirate? Samus kills 50 of those by accident dashing through a room! That is at best a trophy capsule. Ridley may well be part of one of Samus' levels.

Well, we all have our demands. Mine tend more towards the online as you know.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 9th January 2008

THEY AREN'T DONE YET! A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHES!

Captain Olimar!

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/characters/pikmin.html

That's right, he's there, and he's apparently been hit with a growth ray.

Also some info on multi man brawl. Seems they ditched wire frames or polygon mashups in favor of these power ranger lookin' dudes (only with no faces). I don't care what they say, red's the leader. That's the rule, red is ALWAYS the leader!

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - EdenMaster - 10th January 2008

Gentlemen, we are now <b>ONE MONTH</b> away from Brawl! It's time to reinstate the countdown!

31 Days!

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Great Rumbler - 10th January 2008

31 days!!

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Sacred Jellybean - 10th January 2008

We're getting Captain Olimar but not Mega Man? I haven't bought anything and I already want my money back.

(ahh, the wonder of geek entitlement...)

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 10th January 2008

Megaman I want, but I recognize that no deals have yet been arranged with Capcom. Konami on the other hand... What I'm saying is while I want Megaman as much as the next person (Edenmaster), I also want Simon Belmont and there are no obstacles to that at the moment.

Also, I'm not yet sure that they have announced everything. Namely, I think it's not tactically sound to reveal everything in the game before it even comes out. While I can't say I know any SPECIFIC character will be added, I can say I'm fairly sure there are unknown characters not yet announced.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - A Black Falcon - 10th January 2008

Captain Olimar... why... really, why? He isn't Ice Climbers pointless, but still...

I wonder if it implies that there might actually be a third Pikmin game, though? The game style would be so perfect for the Wiimote, obviously...

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Sacred Jellybean - 10th January 2008

Quote:Megaman I want, but I recognize that no deals have yet been arranged with Capcom. Konami on the other hand... What I'm saying is while I want Megaman as much as the next person (Edenmaster), I also want Simon Belmont and there are no obstacles to that at the moment.

I'd prefer a Castlevania Wii game. Swinging the wiimote for a whip or knife would be awesome. If they're talented enough, I think they can get the 3rd person formula right. Did they release any other 3D Castlevanias aside from Castlevania 64? I have a feeling they did, but never followed its progress. People weren't hyping it up, so there's a good chance it was a flop (though I liked Castlevania 64 well enough, so who knows).

Quote:Also, I'm not yet sure that they have announced everything. Namely, I think it's not tactically sound to reveal everything in the game before it even comes out. I'm sure there is another character or two, but if they're as disappointing as King Dedede and Captain Olimar, then I choose not to get my hopes up. It's cool enough that Snake is in the game (though still kind of weird), not to mention Sonic, so I'm satisfied.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 10th January 2008

You know, the two options aren't mutually exclusive. I mean Konami would be the one making a Wii Castlevania game, not the SSBB team.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - A Black Falcon - 10th January 2008

There was Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness on N64, which was an improved version of the first game... I liked those games, really. Quite good games.

Other than that there are two 3d Castlevania games on the PS2 and Xbox, but while I haven't played them they don't look nearly as good. Instead of being behind-the-character action/platform/adventure games, they are zoomed-out slash 'em up action games with absolutely minimal adventure/puzzle and platformer elements. Everything I've heard about them makes it sound like they aren't that great... pretty much pure mediocre run-there-and-kill-the-things action.

Oh yeah, and I agree that Captain Olimar isn't such a great choice, as I said, but Dedede is cool... :)

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Sacred Jellybean - 10th January 2008

Quote:You know, the two options aren't mutually exclusive. I mean Konami would be the one making a Wii Castlevania game, not the SSBB team.

They don't have to be mutually exclusive for me to have a preference. Simon Belmont in one form is more exciting to me than in the other form.

ABF: Yeah, I should look for Legacy of Darkness on ebay sometime. It's on that list of N64 games I want to pick up at one point or another.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - A Black Falcon - 10th January 2008

Definitely get Legacy of Darkness! It's got noticeably better graphics, thanks to its expansion pack support, new levels were added (the new first level is pretty cool, for instance), the new first main character, Cornell, is incredibly powerful and awesome, particularly in wolf mode (yes, he's a werewolf), updated versions of the original two quests are there for you to unlock after you beat the game with Cornell and then beat the special second smaller mode with ... um, I forget that guy's name, but his quest is to rescue these six children in a limited level set within a strict time limit. Do that then you unlock the original two quests, though given that Cornell goes through every level in the game, while Carrie and Rinehardt each only go through some, his might be the best quest. Oh yes, he's also got no time limit and only one ending; no "take too long and you get the bad ending" stuff.

It does still require controller pak for saving and the save file is larger in the second game than the first one, but it's not too bad. Though I do kind of hate Konami for doing that, given that the Japanese versions of the N64 Castlevania/Goemon/Hybrid Heaven games all have built-in EEPROMs... :(

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - EdenMaster - 11th January 2008

Whats with all the Olimar hate? He's awesome, so is Dedede!

I could honestly care less about Mega Man to be honest with you :)

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Sacred Jellybean - 11th January 2008

Captain Olimar is kind of cool as a novelty, but he just seems boring as a fighter. King Dedede, imo, is just really unremarkable and unnecessary. The Pokemon trainer is interesting in that his fighting style is more varied and complex, but as a character also seems bland. Wasted effort, I'm telling you... but hey, you can't please everyone. Every person here has a different idea on what would make the perfect character list. Nintendo is bound to disappoint some people no matter what characters they implement. With all the other cool stuff this game has to offer, it doesn't matter what other underwhelming things they reveal at this point. They could add a Goomba as a contestant and it wouldn't matter to me.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 11th January 2008

The phrase is "couldn't care less". To say you COULD care less means you care more than the minimal amount. That means you care about it. Couldn't care less means you are at the absolute smallest level of giving a care, meaning you don't care at all.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - EdenMaster - 11th January 2008

I'm going to start calling you ABF.

Well, then , what do you want? A bigger roster is a good thing, even better if they're not clones and all play differently.

I wanted three specific characters in this game: Geno, Tom Nook, and Captain Olimar. I got Olimar, Nook and Geno are probably unlikely. That doesn't mean I'm writing off the game. Jeez :P

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 11th January 2008

How did you get "writing off the game" from that?

SJ is finally saying the things he doesn't like about what he's heard, but he isn't just not getting the game. Seriously what happened? Did TC suddenly become a "no complaints zone"? I mean in the past few months it seems like ANY complaint about ANY first party Nintendo game is immediatly met with accusations of how much we HATE the game and how big a whiner we must be. Don't turn this into every single "comments" section of a web log.

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - A Black Falcon - 11th January 2008

DJ, "couldn't care less" and "could care less" are synonyms and always have been, you know that. English is weird. :)

As for the character list, people are going to like the characters from serieses they liked and dislike ones from games they didn't like as much. So I don't like the numerous Pokemon characters and don't care much for Olimar, but I wish that we'd see a lot more Fire Emblem characters (Lyn should have been playable! Olimar is playable and not Lyn? That's so stupid...) and think that it's awesome that Dedede is in, given how Kirby 1 for GB was one of the first console games I ever owned and all. :)

Quote:King Dedede, imo, is just really unremarkable and unnecessary.

Bah, he's a silly looking squishy penguin with a giant hammer and delusions of grandeur... what's wrong with that? :)

Nintendo is perfect and right in all ways, you must not question them!

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - lazyfatbum - 11th January 2008

Question Nintendo!? How dare you! I.... you're insane!

By golly, what if Nintendo were reading this very thread and you suddenly unloaded something as profound as that? We could be killed! Especially talking about a Kirby character few people recognize.

KING DEDEDE IS YUMBY AND GEWD

Captain Olimar... I dunno, he sounds bizarre. He can only do smash attacks with his Pikmin and apparently they'll run around and each one will offer a new attack such as the white poison, purple phatness, yellow electricity, red fire and blue watery something. But I think they can be destroyed as well, hence the flowers. In different screen shots you can see the flowers changing so my thought is:

While fighting, your Pikmin can be smacked in to the ground, losing a level of leafy-ness, at which point you have to run over and pull him back out in order to use him.

Hmm... his super is probably something that involves the ship, perhaps unloading a 100 pikmin army... or drop an orb spider? :D I dont understand the bigness either...

The Official Super Smash Bros. Brawl Thread - See you in March!! - Dark Jaguar - 12th January 2008

I just love Snake's super, the one with the first person pot shoting the screen.

I'm surprised you're calling me out on being negative, what with how diplomatically I worded my post. Unless you read the first few lines and skipped the rest. :) A bigger character roster is never a bad thing (unless you're worried about balance) and I'm only disappointed with some of the recent announcements of new characters. Everything else about this game looks awesome. Nintendo has impressed me enough with what they've shown me and already have my money.
