I'm enjoying it, but it just feels "off" enough that I'm having trouble adjusting. Moves seem to take longer, and the time seems to be just a little different for attacks, for jumping, for grabbing... Maybe it's just me, or maybe my skills have deteriorated. I guess I just need to accept the game for what it is and adjust, but I haven't had time to do that yet. Anybody else feeling that?

I still think the original is my favorite, it was so crisp and fast. I hate charging smash attacks.

There are some things that feel different about it, but I don't mind too much because I don't want it to be exactly the same as Melee. All those little differences give me something to get better at.

Well I noticed one thing they've added is now rapid attacks can all be done by holding down A instead of having to rapid attack manually. Also, rapid attacks for a lot of characters are much faster.

You may have to charge to get a lot of power, but you can also do a really fast smash attack as well if you wish. If their damage is high, that fast one can be enough. I prefer it this way myself because it adds a layer of strategy. It isn't so easy to deliver a devastating smash now.

Many character's timings and some moves have all had some adjustments. One of my friends used to use Marth all the time and notes that the sword range is reduced now.

It'll take some adjusting but all around I think most of the characters are far more balanced. Fox doesn't seem to devastate as he used to, and Pikachu has better strength behind its attacks. Lucario is one of the biggest overhauls (he's basically a Mewtwo clone so that's how I'm judging him) as it really makes up for the biggest weaknesses of Mewtwo's design back in the day. I still think Mewtwo would have made a good addition as I loved how he was a little floatier, the neutral aerial A, and the space his ground "roll" took up, but Lucario is the better fighter. If they brought Mewtwo back, they'd have to increase his damage output and make him more durable to give him a better chance.

Oh, I was wrong about Ice Climbers. I was used to how in Melee when you changed outfits it would show who was in the "lead" of the two, but after testing the outfits in actual combat, yes, two of the costumes do put Nana in charge instead of Popo. Nitpick neutralized :D.

Also, I did manage to get into a good number of battles last night around 1 in the morning. Very few lag spikes and I never noticed attacks failing to connect or character "warping". The way it handles lag in the form of slowing down the game (and that itself was very rare in the matches I played) seems to resolve such issues.

I just found out that while the air dodge isn't a third jump any more , it can now be used multiple times in the air, and further the up+B can be used after it. So, I like the change a lot more now. Further, it seems that now characters can grip ledges even if they are facing away from it as they fall towards it. I love that.

OK, I have put some serious time into this game and have prepared some of my own comments. For one thing, Luigis fireballs dont travel nearly as far, although I like the fact that you can hold his side-B after charging it and release it when you want to. I am not a big fan of the Smoke Bomb, seems something of a pointless, annoying item. Likewise, I love the Cracker Launcher. Used properly, it can be as devastating as a Hammer. Speaking of which, the Hammer seems a little weaker this time around, but perhaps that's so the Golden Hammer can clearly be the more powerful of the two.

Though I didn't think I'd like him too much, I have really taken quite a liking to the Pokemon Trainer. The diversity of attack styles he brings to the table is really appealing. Also, I've been really liking Snake, though honestly, he seems a bit broken to me. He's crazy fast, and hits as hard as Bowser or Ganondorf with attacks that launch half as fast. His forward smash is incredible if it connects, and being able to charge up a down smash, and leave it until someone comes to it themselves seems a bit...cheesy. That said, he's still crazy fun to play.

Hmm...what else...Oh. Subspace Emissary. Very fun stuff.

Cheesy? Are you sure you are using the right word? How is setting up a bomb for others to walk into later a cardboard monster in the background of a B movie or bad dialog?

I have noticed that the time from landing on the ground and being able to act is pretty much instant now. However, the old "shuffling" tricks and the ability to use shield to null out land delay is now out. With Mario and Luigi's up B attack resulting in a somewhat bigger delay than I remember that can matter. However, I think eliminating those "high end" techniques will even out the meta game and keep exploits from becoming major gameplay altering moves.

Ganondorf's adjustments make him more interesting to me. Even his pose lets him use a sword now so it still comes off odd that he never uses it in his moves, but there's something to be said for his new running grab. I also like his up B now as it is easier to connect than the Captain Falcon style move. I will note that he seems to have a shorter jump though.

Sonic is fast... very fast... do not get the bunny hood if you play him until you get used to that speed!

Snake's smash attack moves are really hard to connect, so I don't consider him overpowering in his current form. The issue is that while they are pretty powerful, the down smash doesn't immediatly go off and is useless up at the enemy. The up smash works like a projectile and has good range, but has a really small hit box. The forward smash is really powerful, though it's one lacking is that it is almost more of a down smash in terms of where it goes off. Snake is a good character, but I wouldn't call him overpowering. His moves are usually easy to dodge.

I played against a friend last night who used Sonic and got my ass handed to me because I wasn't used to that speed. I still haven't unlocked him yet, but I'm not going to look up how to do it because I like figuring it out by accident, or I'll just end up finding him in Subspace.

Also, I don't like the way they changed Ganondorfs forward B. It used to launch, now it just grabs, does damage, and drops to his feet. In time I'm sure I'll make use of that for good combos, but I'm still expecting enemies hit by that to go airborne. That, and jump recovery from hanging off the stage used to be fantastic, but seems to have been cut down a bit.

I've got everyone now, finished Subspace Emissary last night. I only played as him for a moment, but I do seem to like Wolf. I'll have to try him more later.

Just came in here lazy!

So far her "feel" in her suit form is pretty much the same. I haven't really noticed any sweeping changes in how she controls or her timing or anything. You can start in Zero Suit form by holding down the shield button after selecting her as you press start. Also, if you press up down up on the taunts (or 1 2 1, depending on what controller you are using), you can ditch the suit automatically, but you can't summon it back the same way. Unlike Trainer and Zelda, the game doesn't allow an easy way to change forms with Samus. That's the one major failing I have in her character design. Yes, her meteor attack still works as well as before.

By the way, Toon Link basically controls like Young Link, as you might have expected. There are some changes for him though. His meteor strike is still present, but I have noticed it now results in him shooting straight down instead of just holding the sword down as he falls. This can be great for doing quicker meteors but if you aren't careful, you can KO yourself.

Anyone else find Mario's new Down B a little lacking? I'm finding myself switching to Luigi just to have the old one. Though, actually a version of it is now Mario's aerial Down A. I just can't seem to find good places to use that water gun. I suppose with practice I might see what the designers were aiming at with that, but so far I just don't see much use for it.

Incidentally, it seems to me that power shielding is a lot easier now.

I drove my room mate to Best Buy to pick this up last night. Guess I lied about being enthusiastic about fighting with you guys. ;) Actually, I've been a little busy. Also, I don't even know our friend code right now.

The game is fun, though. One of our friends commented that it's more arcade-y, and I think that's about accurate. They definitely put in a lot of great stuff to warrant a sequel, though. I love the first player mode. Kurt (my room mate) and I were playing in a level that was modeled after that one temple in Super Mario Land. I could tell by the music.

I really like Zero Suit Samus and Pit. I'll have to play with more of them. I can see the next cheap character being Ike, but balance has apparently been addressed much better in this version.

What time do you guys usually get on to play? Let's schedule something. 9:00 EST is pretty good for me, though there's no guarantee that the TV or Wii won't be occupied. If you guys stay up late, I'm usually up until at least 2-3.

Ike is pretty powerful. I used him to clear some of the multi-man melee matches, but he is a tad slow. I'm only on at night, usually between 8-9 CST. Well, I was able to play some Brawl today for the first time. It seems to be very, very similar to SSBM, but with (in the mode we were in at least) long load times and (mostly) different stages and a few new characters. Other than that... very similar.

Pit is pretty cool.

I don't think I'd buy it unless I had a lot of money to waste, though... SSB and SSBM were christmas presents (that I asked for, of course), and I always thought that I'd never have gotten them at full price if I hadn't gotten them that way. It's no different here... it is a good game though, of course. But why does there seem to be so many really small stages... the larger ones are better.

Once you actually play it for a while, you start to notice that there are actually quite a few differences.

1. A lot of the characters have be rebalanced.
2. There are new characters that play a lot differently from the old characters.
3. New items mix things up; final smashes, assist trophies, spicy curry, and so on.
4. A lot of the new levels actively try to kill you or throw you off. Classic Donkey Level with DK, springs, and fire that attack you or the WarioWare level that actually makes you play the different minigames.
5. Items are easier to grab.
6. Characters can be hit into other characters for damage, saves, or expulsions.
7. And it's got a ton of extra content.

I for one love how the game has kept its core elements. It's like Madden football -minor adjustments are nice, but any radical changes will drive the fan base away. And how successful has that franchise been? I'll admit that I buy the stats and roster update for that game every year.

Some fighting game sequels change almost nothing, others change a lot... in most fighting game serieses the way it works is they make a game, then quickly make several more versions of it that only change things slightly, before, if the series continues, changing things more in a later sequel. SSBB is more like 'it's a lot later, but changes things minimally'. The same applies to the character selection... just look at KOF, where they constantly rotate their large roster so that every game brings some characters back and drops others, occasionally adding a few new ones. The SSB games are too spread out to use that technique, so they just brought back almost everyone while adding some new characters, having only a few more characters than last time (though I still think that their choices of new characters weren't too good). It's okay that way, but it does leave you frustrated when you know that there are so many more characters they could be putting in but aren't...

As for stages... as I said, what the heck is the point with all those tiny stages? They're no fun to fight on...

The Warioware level is my current favorite level in the entire series of Smash Brothers. The Mario Kart level on the other hand...

Small is fine if the level is well made, and there are still a number of larger levels. All in all I'm pretty happy with the level selection. I just wish they had brought back ALL the Melee levels. It should have been a simple conversion anyway.

I don't think the Mario Kart level is bad, it's just a little uninspired. There aren't really any levels I hate in Brawl. Even the scrolling Donkey Kong level isn't as bad as the scrolling Ice Climbers level from Melee. The Wario Ware level is great, but my new favorite is the Electroplankton stage. It's pretty simple, but incredibly cool and well-balanced (like most of the Brawl stages). The 75m stage is my favorite for nostalgia and novelty's sake, but it isn't my favorite to play.

It was probably an issue of space. They crammed in 41 levels, 35 characters, 250+ songs, about an hour of cutscenes, and all kinds of other stuff.

Really? Personally, I don't care too much for the larger levels like 75M and New Pork City. It takes way too long to get to across the stage to where other people are and its really easy to hide or run away.

Hyrule Temple was by far the best stage in SSBM... and in the first SSB, the Great Fox and Hyrule Castle were probably best. All larger stages.

I don't really like the larger stages either. Hyrule Temple is good, but it is too easy to run and hide. Even for someone who spams PK Thunder from a distance I still prefer close quarters in Smash Bros. It's part of the fun of the game.

Actually I love Hyrule Temple as well, but I also like the smaller stages.

If the issue was space, they could have cleared out the data they did not use. However, it seems that there was still room on the disk to fit in such things. Those stages likely didn't take up that much room, especially the N64 classic stages, as the model data wasn't too complex and it was using low resolution textures.

The only stage I don't like in Brawl is the Spear Pillar, for the fact that it can (and does) instantaneously reverse everything on the screen, your controls included. It's incredibly disorienting and frustrating. I don't "hate" New Pork City, per se, but it's waaay too big to be fun, IMO.

I'm not a big fan of Hanenbow either. There is no real "music", and it seems you're doing more jumping than fighting.

All the others are good though.

I'm a little confused. Small stages? Which ones are small? They're all a good size. The stages that take 500% damage to reach the other side to knock someone out are teh suck.

Dont know if any of you remember me from Cypherstation. This is Darthmaull0014/AdmiralFenix/LiberalGenius and what ever other tags I had. I was randomly thinking of that old, old, site tonight, and I figured to check and see if tendo city was still up, and holy shitballs it is. How long has this site been up for? Do Waltall/Eden/Darunia/Oden/Dark Lord Neo/Bounty Hunter or any of the oldies still post here? Just thought id drop in to say hey. Im not going to even begin to pretend that im going to come back here regularly, ive done that a few times, but unfortunatlly every time I say I will become a regular, I end up having no time =(. If any of you old timers are still on here, I'll be willing to play, and beat you in a game of brawl [Image: wink.gif][Image: biggrin.gif]. Let me know and ill post my code haha.

I haven't seen any stages that need percentages THAT high, but the bigger ones do allow recovery from over 100%. That just makes the matches longer though, and that's fun too.

Hanenbow has no real music? Played Elektroplankton? That's more or less the music. I mean there's a repeating sound pattern isn't there? That's all music is. I think it's unique and I like it.

Funny that you mention Spear Pillar. A few of my friends consider it their favorite level (mine's still Wario Ware) for exactly the reason you gave for not liking it. Inverting and rotating the stage but only visually so the controls remain the same? That's the whole point! :D I also like when Dialga slows down or speeds up time.

Of course the thing to keep in mind is if you don't LIKE a level, you can just remove it from the random level select and not have to worry about playing it (I assume everyone else also plays the game using "random" almost exclusively for picking stages?).

They don't remain the same, though. They reverse. Right becomes left and vice-versa. I'm jumping back to the stage headed right, everything inverts in the blink of an eye, and suddenly I'm now moving AWAY from the stage, and die.

Hey i just skimmed, hi admiral, also i think those items/music scores might be locked features for future updates (ie: pay for the rest of the d/l or unlock) because the composer from Cronotrigger and xenogears also provided material for brawl which is apparently missing, hur hur hur. Not exactly. When the stage is mirrored, the controls don't mirror with them. If they did, you'd still be moving the way you want :D. That's the whole thing, and it's awesome!

I haven't unlocked that stage. I agree about New Pork City, though, it's too big. Same deal with Hyrule Castle. I like being able to see my character as more than just a speck. At the same time, I don't really care for really small stages like the Game & Watch one; it's hard to recover from a smash attack there.

Final Destination is my favorite stage because it's so basic. I suppose other stages are more fun, but if you want to base a match solely on individual skill and not on luck, then it's best to go to Final Destination and turn items off.

And damn, I don't know any of those new Pokémon. I stopped with the second generation.
