Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Darunia - 5th January 2007

I finally got a Wii today, and got Zelda and Call of Duty 3.

I find the controls slightly vexing; especially for CoD3, as I can hardly keep a straight plain of sight. The Zelda controls aren't so bad... but, I find it so radically different from the other Zeldas I know and love, that I feel quite detached from the franchise.

Congrats! By popular consensus COD3 is the WORST iteration of that game in the series!

Should have got Elebits or Second Opinion.

Try Wii Sports.

Are Zelda's controls really that different? I picked them up almost instantly. Sure the sword thing is a little tacked on, and doing a "shield bash" is near impossible (I keep accidentally doing sword spins, or worse, nothing), but the aiming and fishing are very well done.

I have to go with DJ on this one; the controls just aren't that different. And shield bashes are actually REALLY easy [for me anyway], you just shove the nunchuck towards the screen. Worked almost every single time for me.

I do that too, and I keep doing spin attacks accidentally. I mean I do it harder, faster, and even rapidly draw the joystick part back, since I apparently think that'll help, and no, it makes it worse! It's pretty much impossible. That's why I'm with a lot of people in that the sword slashing is pretty much tacked on (and shield bashing and spin attacks, literally moving the joystick in a circle never works, jerking it back and forth SOMETIMES works, basically I can't depend on those moves when I need them so I rarely use them).

However, aiming and fishing? Well, FISH ON! GOAT IN! SHINE GET!

I had trouble with the sheild attack too till I learned the trick. The key is to not push it forward like you were holding a dagger, which is how you'd instinctively try to do it, given it's shape and the manner in which you hold it. Rather, you want to hold it up, with the analog stick facing you, and then thrust it forward, as though you were holding (surprise!) a shield! Spin attack works great for me, never fails when I want it. Just shake the 'chuk and HYAAAAAAAGH!

"Detached from the fanchise"? From controls? Trust me, you're just not used ot it yet. By the itme you finish the first dungeon, you'll wonder how you ever used a controller before.

...

Well maybe not, but you WILL have the hang of it.

So the trick is tilting it up, like guarding in Wii Boxing? I'll need to give that a shot.

But as for spin attacks, well it just doesn't work all the time. I've tried rotating in a circle, shaking it back and forth, and so on. Odd thing is sometimes I'll be rapidly shaking for a few seconds and it only does the move the moment I STOP, but too much of the time it just fails to activate at all. I have to shake it back and forth a couple of times before it triggers...

Darunia, here's an update. The Zelda games occasionally alter their control method. It's like you haven't played any of the Zelda games before OOT or something :D.

I think your problem is that you pull it back too hard, causing the motion-sensors to conclude that you're trying to do a spin attack. Just pop it forward and then ease it back.

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Dark Jaguar - 6th January 2007

More like ease it to a stop, since a sudden stop, relativistically speaking, is identical to suddenly pulling back.

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Great Rumbler - 6th January 2007

Okay, I just booted up TP and did about twenty shield bashes in a row utilizing both one sharp forward movement AND one sharp movement forward and one sharp movement backward. Both of them worked every single time.

Shield bash = Sharp movement towards the screen
Spin attack = Sharp movement towards the left or right

Worked every single time for me.

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Dark Jaguar - 6th January 2007

In that case, both of my joysticks must be broken.

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Great Rumbler - 6th January 2007

Apparently.

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Dark Jaguar - 6th January 2007

That was sarcasm.

At any rate, I held it vertically as EM suggested and can do a shield bash on command now. Spin attacks are still a little tricky though, but that'll probably always be the case.

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Great Rumbler - 7th January 2007

I simply do not understand the difficulty people have with doing those two moves.

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Dark Jaguar - 7th January 2007

Well the game never made it clear you are supposed to hold the nunchuck part horizontally instead of vertically, nor was it readily apparent. The spin attack is just "stubborn" though. No matter how violently I shake it, it only happens like 90% of the time, as opposed to the 100% that I demand. Weirdlly, sometimes it ONLY happens after I STOP shaking it.

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Great Rumbler - 7th January 2007

I always hold the nunchuk part vertically...

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Dark Jaguar - 8th January 2007

Huh, that's weird. Well, not during Wii boxing though right?

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Great Rumbler - 8th January 2007

Yes.

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - DMiller - 8th January 2007

I've always held the nunchuck horizontally. It feels more natural that way with the analog stick on the top.

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Dark Jaguar - 8th January 2007

I dunno, sometimes it can be tough.

"You have killed your own fairy."

Fudge!

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - lazyfatbum - 10th January 2007

I hold it in any position and flick it down without moving the position of my arm at all. Like you're beating a drum with just wrist movements. *does it to show people*

Darunia's Wii Thoughts - Dark Jaguar - 10th January 2007

I see I see... repeat the motion... aha!

There we go.
