LOL

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 13th December 2006

As someone in that thread said, at least the guy has job security now... :D

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - DMiller - 13th December 2006

This has got to be some sort of joke. Can that game seriously still be in development?

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 13th December 2006

Yes... though a lot of people believe otherwise, I do think that they're actually working on it. :)

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Dark Jaguar - 13th December 2006

I think I need to see some evidence of that at this point. I haven't seen a single pic or movie of this game in, what, how long? Oh right, when they showed the title screen on the frickin' Atari 2600. If they actually intend on finishing it in a year or so, which apparently is what I've heard they are trying for, then they should at least try to get the hype train started. But nope, not pic 1 has surfaced. I have to wonder if this is actually a project that is in some sort of production hell with all the people otherwise assigned to work on it currently working on other projects and zero progress being made at all. I'm sure countless assets have needed to be destroyed since the FPS genre has been totally overhauled like 3 times since this project first began...

What I'm saying is if they don't show me something then yes, I have good reason to doubt they have anything to show at all.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 13th December 2006

They claim they'll publish information again when it's close to release... but yeah, the whole situation is beyond ridiculous. Nine and three quarters years in development, and still no release date... simply insane.

3DRealms DOES exist though, and the people there do do things, so... (and they have done other things -- witness how they helped external teams with Max Payne 1 and 2 and Prey over the last 5 years or so...)

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Dark Jaguar - 13th December 2006

I don't doubt the company's existence, and those games are the reason why. I'm doubting if there's any real progress being made on that little Duke Nukem game.

The question is, will the game even really be worth it? Certainly the story, considering it's Duke we're talking about, isn't going to be nearly as good as even the story of the game's creation :D. In terms of that, their best bet is to make it the FUNNIEST possible game, as in over the top parody of action.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - EdenMaster - 13th December 2006

DNF is now so synonymous with delayed games that I, personally, think that it would be better for them not to release it :D.

Think about, what are the chances, realistically, of the game being good? Second of all, if it does suck, it sinks once more inthe the annals of obscurity where so many games fester.

OR it is never released, and it is semi-immortalized as an ico for all vaporware.

Or maybe I just need sleep and I'm delusional. I'm leaning toward the latter.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 13th December 2006

It won't be bad... I wouldn't say Apogee/3DRealms has ever published a truly bad game. Will it be the greatest FPS ever or something? Or truly worth a nine-plus-year wait? No, it probably won't be those either... but it should be fun.

Quote:In terms of that, their best bet is to make it the FUNNIEST possible game, as in over the top parody of action.

Right. It just needs to be fun... fun over-the-top action the way most games wouldn't try (I mean remember, it was nine years ago or so, but this IS the company that published Shadow Warrior!). If it's that, it'll be remembered decently... even if it will also certainly be remembered for its way-beyond-insane product cycle. :)

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Dark Jaguar - 13th December 2006

Oh yeah, that's right! Will they include a nuclear bomb that detonates half the level like in that game? (With range expanding options in the .ini file as well?) It should would put the nuke in nukem.

Duke Nukem Forever, put into a wide historical perspective.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Great Rumbler - 27th January 2007

I was 10 years old when DNF was announced.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Dark Jaguar - 27th January 2007

The sad thing is, though the game might be graphically impressive when it finally hits, it won't live up to whatever hype it has left (and I think even it's own hype is nearly dead).

It won't be game of the decade, or a turnaround for the genre, or some reinvention, or even game of the year. I have yet to see anything suggesting it'll be anything other than a forgettable "me too" FPS that barely registers on the radar except that it was in production for a decade.

If it's as good as Duke 3D, it'll definitely be better than that... "Game of the decade"? Probably not. But good or great? I don't think they'd release it if it wasn't...

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Dark Jaguar - 27th January 2007

Consider this. The people working on this have been ENSNARED by this project for a DECADE. 10 years of their life, GONE! Towards THIS?! They may just want to END this monster.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 27th January 2007

That is true, no game is really worth ten years of development, and they've acknowledged that it has gone on too long... but they just won't ship it in a condition they aren't completely satisfied with, so despite that it still goes on.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Great Rumbler - 27th January 2007

Quote:but they just won't ship it in a condition they aren't completely satisfied with

That's what a lot of companies do and yet they somehow manage to produce more than one title every decade.

At some point you have to decide on a course of action and go with it, and not do what 3DRealms is doing and constantly shift your course based on the competition and ultimately have absolutlely nothing to show for your work.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 27th January 2007

Oh, they have something, they just aren't showing anyone it (this little screenshot from a Gamasutra 'want to program for 3DRealms' ad/listing, I believe)... :)

Because they have corporate people above them saying "ship the game soon", or because they are more capable than 3DRealms of saying "that is enough", I'm sure.

Honestly, if they're taking this long to get a finished product, I can't feel too sorry for them because they're obviously not devoting that much of their life to it.

How long did it take Valve to make Half-Life 2? How long did it take Nintendo to make Twilight Princess? How long did it take Sony to make ICO/Shadow of the Colossus? How long did it take Epic to make Gears of War? How long did it take Bethesda to make Oblivion? How long did it take Square to make Final Fantasy XII? How long did it take Retro to make Metroid Prime?

Most of those games took about 3 or 4 years. Think about that.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 28th January 2007

Half-Life 2 took six years...
Final Fantasy XII was 4-5 years or more...
Zelda Twilight Princess was four years...

Not sure about those others.

Of course, you know that even three years used to be thought excessive -- witness the hype and drama around three-year project Daikatana. (though Ocarina of Time came five years after the previous Zelda game, I'm not sure how long it was actually in production) Game development times keep increasing... they got to 10 by starting over several times.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Great Rumbler - 28th January 2007

The point is, DNF has already become a huge joke of a development disaster. It's taken them 10 years of work to get a 200X125 "real-time" screenshot.

DNF is excessive to an EXTREME that should never have been gone to.

They released a few trailers in the first four or five years, but then went silent (and certainly everything seen in those trailers was removed from the game a long time ago)...

Of course you're right that it's become one of the jokes of the industry, and nothing is worth ten years of work, but even so... I guess I'm a hopeless Apogee/3DRealms fan, but I don't blame them for doing anything wrong and am looking forward to seeing the game whenever it is that it comes out.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Weltall - 28th January 2007

Maybe it is nothing but a joke, and they perpetuate for our comedic benefit.

No other explanation makes even a shred of logical sense.

You should blame them for not releasing it back in 2001 when it almost finished and looked REALLY, REALLY AWESOME.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 28th January 2007

Perhaps, but they just weren't satisfied enough with it...

Maybe they could be a bit less perfectionist, but... well, being happy to ship unfinished or inferior games isn't a good thing either...

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Great Rumbler - 28th January 2007

Or they are insane and have no idea how to actually finish a product anymore.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 28th January 2007

I just don't believe that.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Great Rumbler - 28th January 2007

They certainly haven't shown much to indicate the contrary.

I just don't think that George Broussard (who posts on the 3DR forums sometimes) and Joe Siegler (3DR webmaster) (and sometimes Scott Miller) have been just lying to the press, and their fans, for years. Sorry...

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Great Rumbler - 29th January 2007

Maybe they should start by proving that they've actually done something?

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 29th January 2007

And if it's still a year or more from release, what would that really accomplish?

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Dark Jaguar - 29th January 2007

This is EXACTLY the truth!

We have no idea what's going on!

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Great Rumbler - 30th January 2007

Quote:And if it's still a year or more from release, what would that really accomplish?

The same as what most companies accomplish by showing images/videos from their games when they are a year from being released?

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Dark Jaguar - 30th January 2007

Informing people of the existance of the game? I'm pretty sure that's covered.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Great Rumbler - 30th January 2007

Yeah, we know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about DNF.

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - A Black Falcon - 30th January 2007

We know that it exists and that they are working on it. Beyond that, publicizing information which may change before the game is finished is pointless... they decided to not raise people's hopes or continue showing things that wouldn't stick in the game long until they were six months from finishing it, and it was a very good decision. Seriously, if they had been coming out with press and stuff regularly for the past six years, instead of going silent, the situation (and ridicule) would be exponentially worse than they are now!

No, what they're doing makes sense. It's just taking them a ridiculously long time to finish.

So GR... S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? :)

3DRealms Hiring Staff for DNF... - Great Rumbler - 30th January 2007

Honestly? None of what they're doing makes sense.

After five years of delays and some silence, yes. :) Yet I don't remember you criticizing GSC Gameworld as harshly for it as you have 3DR here... maybe you did, but I don't remember it.

Quote:Honestly? None of what they're doing makes sense.

Yes, it does make sense, and I've said why...

Well, I talked numerous times about not being pleased that it's taking so long. The information flow has been sporadic at times, but it still there. They didn't hole themselves up somewhere and refuse to leak even the slightest bit of information. I think 2004 was the original release date [maybe 2005] and we've been getting pictures and reports on and off over the course of the past two years.

And they only took five years, not ten.
