Xbox 360 hits 10 million shipped - Paco - 8th December 2006

Quote:"At a NASDAQ event in London, chief financial officer Chris Liddell reiterated Microsoft's forecast for 10 million consoles by the end of the Christmas season. "

...

"Reaching the 10 million goal is just now a matter of sales: about a week ago the company shipped its ten millionth console. And from the looks of things, hitting the mark may not be that difficult."

For Microsoft, shipped = sold to retailers

Their original estimates were to have 10 million sold to consumers by the time the competition launched...looks like they missed that by a bit. Good sales in any case.

Xbox 360 sold 511,000 units in N.A. according to NPD. They're on track to sell even more in December.[Link]

I wish every company would use "sold to consumers" instead of "shipped".

Quote:They're on track to sell even more in December.

Actually, if past trends hold true for the Xbox360, it will likely sell a bit less in December than it did in November

For reference:
November 2005 = 325,902
December 2005 = 281,441

They would have to report smaller numbers then though, which would make them look worse...

... at least Nintendo consistently talks sold numbers, even if Sony and MS sure don't. :(

As for 10 million shipped this year, that's unlikely, just like Nintendo's 4 million this year (looks like they might miss it) or Sony's ... erm, every prediction for PS3 shipments they've ever given... :D

A bit over 500,000 X360 sales this November is good, but it was still behind the GBA, PS2, and DS, and the PS3 and Wii just didn't have enough units on the shelves to compete...

I thought December was usually everybody's strongest month, though...

ABF, Microsoft already shipped 10 million units like a week or so ago. It's not sitting in a warehouse or distribution center, it's in retail.

Nintendo counts sold through to consumers? How?

FYI, Sony counts units shipped once it leaves the factory.

It was ordered by retail, you mean, and perhaps shipped (not sure on exactly how MS tracks it); that doesn't mean that the systems are all actually on the shelves, or, much less, sold...

How? What do you mean? You think they can't learn how many of the units they shipped the retailrs sold? I just know that they usually do talk actual sold numbers...

I do see a LOT of 360s around. That is, they aren't NOT in the stores.

And with Nintendo's systems, they tend to scan a bar code whenever you buy them. When I've had my system repaired, my Gamecube, they knew exactly when and where I bought the thing through the serial number.

I'm sure MS and Sony know how many systems have actually been sold to consumers as well. In this age why would they not want to know how many people own their systems? They just choose to announce shipped systems because bigger is better.

Walmart doesn't participate in serial number tracking for the XBOX360 (at least at my store), only on DS's, PS2, GBA SP, and GC, I'm not sure why. At any rate the numbers have to be off.

EDIT:

That's not to say that Bill Gates children don't call daddy and give all the news in lake Wobegon the first chance they get. Soon as your XBOX finds a connection to the net, that's all she wrote.

The XBOX can detect the presence of an ethernet cable before a connection is established.

1. Cable detected (1ms response time)
2. IP address leased (about 3s response time)
3. Successful call home (63ms round trip)

Total time the Xbox 360 requires to invade your privacy:
3.64 seconds from initial insertion of cable.

Wireless:

1. Wireless adapter in detected and installed (10s)
2. Searches for Unsecured Networks (2ms)
3. IP address leased (about 10s response time)
4. Successful call home (108ms round trip)

Total time the Xbox 360 requires to invade your privacy:
20.208 seconds after the initial insertion of the USB wireless adapter.

And don't think you have to setup a connection for an attempt to be made.

I provided a link saying exactly how MS tracks their shipped nubmers- when they are shipped to retail. It's in the original post.

I just asked how.

I think actual sales are closer to 8 million than 10 million.
