How about filling your mind with the pure, refined essence of awesome and beauty, respectively?

The point is that these nerds ruin a perfectly good educational opportunity with inane questions.

Congrats! You now know how to say a phrase that will just get you funny looks if you actually try to have a conversation with a Japanese speaking individual.

Ow, don't misunderstand me... I can fully appreciate the intellectual aspects of anime, for example the super mind expanding end of Neon Genesis.

Its just hard to ignore how dirty the mind of some Asians are. Case in point, "La Blue Girl" with a classic WTF moment of pure that's really really wrong evey 10.5 seconds. :)

Mind expanding? Evangelion? I watched that series just because so many people talk about how deep it is, but it rang as shallow as any emo teen story I've ever seen. "My father hates me. I'm fighting in a giant robot but nobody loves me.". Ugh, the whole thing just rang stupid to me. And the end was just a pathetic philosophy student dropout thing. Wow, how incredibly deep. He figured out that the universe operates by specific laws and that it's enough to actually be able to enjoy life. EVERYONE KNOWS THAT, IDIOT. Also the severe pushing of some odd philosophy that the world is entirely determined by your own mind, which is odd because I must be pretty messed up if this is the world I created. More accurate to say our view of the world is only via our sensory input of it.

The whole thing just wrang as tripe to me. Why do people like that series again?

Since the entire point of the serious escapes you at such an astronomical level there no point in explaining it.

Or more subversive to say, my view of the world as my minds eye constructs the planet around me, involves you being wrong and the show being uber bad ass.

"You don't get it so I'm not going to explain it to you." Now there's a cop-out, and also it doesn't make any sense. So if it made perfect sense to me, you'd explain it in perfect detail?

End of Evangelion redoes the ending into something ... seemingly different but supposedly hinted at in the series ending too... but if you don't get anime, I don't know if it's possible to say why it's great... it is, though. :)

If it made perfect sence to you I wouldn't have to :)

That was my point.

And here's the thing, the point seems pretty blatant, just silly and trite. You are the one saying I'm not getting it, but you refuse to explain why. If you are going to make a claim at least try to back it up. What do you expect me to do, just accept what you say without any reasoning behind it at all?

 YES! NOW YOU GET IT!
Anime is incredibly cool, with no explanation necessary.

Ain't that the truth... - Dark Jaguar - 4th August 2006

That's illogical. Either you back up your claim that I'm clueless and "just don't get it" with SOME sort of explanation, or you are just spouting hot air.

Sure there are things you could say are problems about anime, like about anything, (for instance, unoriginality... most anime falls into a few categories, and most anime characters are quite cliched...) but if it's well done and worth watching, do those things really matter? (okay, some things about anime annoy me sometimes, but I like it anyway. ... but would it really kill you to actually put endings that make sense and conclude things on your shows? Yes? Bah... :))

As for Evangelion, it was good... very confusing at the end, but good. Not my favorite anime ever or anything, and perhaps a bit overrated just because of how many people love it so much (and it might have made more sense if I had a better knowledge of the obscure details of christian theology... :D), but interesting...

Have you seen any of either show GR put images of up? Two great examples of interesting, thought-provoking animes... I could list more, but I don't know if there'd be a point...

Anyway...
Bad things about anime:
-most animes have bad, incomprehensible, or nonexistent endings
-most anime characters are extremely cliched and can quickly be placed in their character category type. Those stereotypes are often negative -- reinforcing sexist gender roles, for one, but race too (stereotyping nationalities in ways that just are not true)... those things get to me sometimes...
-anime makers, like all entertainment companies, like to make more of things that work -- so you get lots of shows in the most popular categories and only a relative few that try to be unique (this is expected, of course, but a fact)

Why is it good then? Lists of good things are harder to make... it might be largely subjective. I can say a few things though...
-on the whole much more mature plots than most american television and certainly more mature than american animation by far (american television, for the most part, just isn't like this...)
-you can't take a happy ending at the end for granted -- they don't always happen (though there certainly are animes out there which aren't all depressing and sad at the end, it's not a near-given like it can seem at times to be here...)
-types of shows you just don't get made in the US -- if you start watching anime and come to like the kinds of shows they make, you can't get similar things, for the most part, anywhere else (this is a really important point!)
-those rare shows which go beyond the averageness and cliches of normal animes... such as Ghost in the Shell and Kino, or Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei...

Now, I do love American sci-fi shows, and would say that they are often an exception, but Ghost in the Shell (for instance) is as good as any of them... not necessarially better, but as good.

I'm sure there are plenty more reasons, but that's something at least.

I like anime, some of it. It's a medium of expression, not a "genre".

You should pay more attention. I was saying I thought Evangelion was trite and not nearly as amazing as everyone kept telling me it was. I wasn't saying anime is the stupid. The point of this thread was people who join a class because of their obsession with some sort of fiction ruining it for the rest of the class. You know, like a bunch of people trying to become hackers after watching "The Matrix" asking dumb questions through the whole class about how they can design a seamless world in a machine (which is a very loaded and complicated question but they ask it in a way that suggests they really didn't get anything in the class and wanted some sort of magic spell they could stick in a compiler to get their matrix world).

That was also aimed at the thing you linked (at the beginning), which was kind of stupid... but then again, YTMND in general is like that, so...

There's nothing wrong with doing those things... it'd just be an issue if you don't take it seriously and act like you already know the stuff because of what you saw on TV told you enough, which of course is not true. :)
