Nintendo DS Lite Launch date to be revealed today - Smoke - 3rd May 2006

Quote: Breaking NDAs
Do you know when the Nintendo DS Lite is coming out in the states?

Yes. Yes, as a matter of fact I do.

And do you know how much it's going to retail for?

Of course. That information was given out pretty much at the same time as the release date.

What about colors? Surely you don't know what colors it's going to ship in when it's released here...

Actually, yep. Sure do.

What? Sheesh, how long have you been holding out on us?

Oh...going on a couple of weeks now.

C'mon, Craig, tell us!

No. Not until May 4th.

Aww...please? C'mon. Why not?

Because I signed an NDA that said I wouldn't.

Pfft. Like a piece of paper's going to tell you what to do.

Actually, you're right...it's not the piece of paper that's keeping my mouth shut. It's the fact that I actually enjoy the relationship I've held with Nintendo for so long, and going against their wishes could really screw up future coverage.

Fine. I'll go someplace else for the news. I'm sure a fansite will tell me.

You do that. The rest of you should sit tight for the announcement. It's not like the wait's going to kill you.

Or is it?

U.S. DS Lite Price and Date Announced
READ MORE: DS, Hardware, Nintendo, breaking, damn sexy, ds lite, top, white

Nintendo today launched a thousand smiles when they finally confirmed that the DS Lite, svelte brother to the bulky, yet handsome DS, will indeed be coming to the States.

The DS Lite will officially go on sale here on June 11 for a mere $130. The only official color announced thus far is that finger print ready white that seems so popular among the iPod set.

Hit the jump for Nintendo’s official press release and to avoid reading my squeals of delight.

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

Sorry, I couldn’t hold it in.

REDMOND, Wash., May 4 /PRNewswire/ — Millions of people around the world already enjoy playing Nintendo DS™, and the system’s future looks even brighter. On June 11, Nintendo DS™ Lite joins Nintendo’s video game family when it launches in the Americas. The lighter, brighter version of the hot-selling Nintendo DS is expected to be priced as low as $129.99 at retailers throughout the United States. The inaugural color is an elegant
Polar White with a raised DS logo on the cover.

Nintendo DS Lite arrives just in time for players to pop in the latest version of one of the most storied franchises in video game history. New Super Mario Bros.®, launching May 15, updates classic Mushroom Kingdom
action with new features and fun.
“DS Lite and New Super Mario Bros. represent a double shot of gaming excellence,” says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “We’ve got something for both lovers of
beautiful, new gadgets and fans of old-school gaming.”

Nintendo DS Lite comes with a variety of distinctive changes that set it apart from the original — and from all other hand-held video game systems:

* It’s less than two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and more
than 20 percent lighter.

* Its two bright screens can be adjusted to four levels to adapt to
different lighting conditions and to extend battery power.

* The microphone sits in the center of the unit, and the LED lights are
clearly visible whether the unit is open or closed.

* The stylus is 1 centimeter longer and 1 millimeter thicker than the
stylus of the original, and slides into a side storage slot.

* The Start and Select buttons were repositioned for easier access.

* A removable cover keeps the Game Boy® Advance cartridge slot clear
from dust and debris when it’s not in use.

New Super Mario Bros. is just one of the many Nintendo DS games that look great on Nintendo DS Lite. Players set off on a side-scrolling platform adventure bursting with the style and superb game play that got many people
hooked on video games in the first place. The Mushroom Kingdom is populated with friends and foes, both new and old, and tons of power-ups, including mushrooms that make Mario mega- and micro-sized. The Super Mario franchise has sold more than 184 million games worldwide, which makes it one of the top-selling video game franchises of all time.
Ever since its November 2004 launch, the original Nintendo DS has helped to redefine perceptions of what constitutes a video game. Many systems have been sold to people who are discovering video games for the first time. Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo’s wireless gaming service, has seen more than 1 million connections worldwide. Thousands of people every day log on to battle one another in Metroid® Prime Hunters or see who has all their Tetriminos (falling blocks) in a row in Tetris® DS.
Nintendo DS continues to broaden the market for video games. Nintendo DS has software that appeals to older gamers, hard-core gamers and even lapsed gamers. Brain Age™: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day went on sale in the United States on April 17 after encountering massive success in Japan. Nintendo will continue that momentum by introducing two upcoming titles that require more brain power than firepower. On June 5, Big Brain Academy™ arrives to challenge users with a variety of mental tests designed to evaluate various skills. Then on June 26, Sudoku Gridmaster will keep number crunchers busy with more than 400 sudoku puzzles, each one sanctioned by the original creators of sudoku.

The worldwide innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its Wii™, Nintendo DS™, Game Boy® Advance and Nintendo GameCube™ systems. Since 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 2 billion video games and more than 360 million hardware units globally, and has created industry icons like Mario™, Donkey Kong®, Metroid®, Zelda™ and Pokemon®. A wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo’s operations in the Western Hemisphere. No increased price? Nice...

This pic doesnt do it justice, but when you see it in the store you're going to instantly see how badass the new screens are. It's sharper, details pop out like crazy and just plain looks better.

Nintendo DS Lite Launch date to be revealed today - Dark Jaguar - 4th May 2006

I'm sure it does.

At any rate, why such a long time for release? The system is identical, save for the charge adapter, and I highly doubt that the power adapter conversion is really taking up this much time.

Oh and, is Nintendo really going to call the game New Super Mario Bros? That name sounds like a developer's code name for the project.

Nintendo DS Lite Launch date to be revealed today - Smoke - 4th May 2006

I believe the reason for the long wait is because they're already having a hard time keeping up with the demand in Japan.

Nintendo DS Lite Launch date to be revealed today - Great Rumbler - 5th May 2006

They can still barely keep it stocked over there.

Nintendo DS Lite Launch date to be revealed today - A Black Falcon - 5th May 2006

I think that they've just begun to get the Japanese stores up, but yeah, that's why it's been delayed I'm sure...

Nintendo DS Lite Launch date to be revealed today - Dark Jaguar - 5th May 2006

Yeah that sounds reasonable.

At any rate, what are the chances they will be out and out replacing the old model with the new one, rather than selling them side by side? I think it is likely they will have both for sale at first, just to see if people prefer the new model or not, and then if people just aren't buying enough of the old model to justify keeping it in stores, they'll take that off the shelf.

I'm just hoping that happens soon, so I can enact "plan omega from space" in which I say my DS is faulty and cash in on the warrentee I've been keeping for almost a year and a half now by saying "oh, no old model DS's, I'll settle for a new model then".

Nintendo DS Lite Launch date to be revealed today - lazyfatbum - 5th May 2006

pretty soon here, Nintendo is going to announce a price cut and/or bundle for the original DS. Stores dont just remove things, they have to sell them. So i'm willing to bet a 100 dollar DS with your choice of one of the top selling DS games is on its way... maybe cheaper but i doubt it.

DJ/ They'll just fix your original DS, just like they still fix GBA's and dont send you a GBA SP. You wont get a DS Lite out of a waranty. (if you do, lemme know :D)

Nintendo DS Lite Launch date to be revealed today - Dark Jaguar - 5th May 2006

Not Nintendo's warrentee, Best Buy's. I wouldn't expect Nintendo to fall for something like that, but Best Buy just might. At the least, I'll get some dead pixels fixed if they do that. However, from what I've read on this little slip of paper, basically they just offer to replace your electronic device with another.

Nintendo DS Lite Launch date to be revealed today - lazyfatbum - 5th May 2006

That might work, but how long is it good for? those things usually expire after a little while.

Nintendo DS Lite Launch date to be revealed today - Dark Jaguar - 5th May 2006

This one is good for two years, otherwise I would have "cashed it in" by now just to get one that didn't have scuffed paint :D.

As it stands, the only issue will be creating a bunch of new id codes for my online games, but I didn't exactly have a flourishing friend list on those, thanks to the total inability to ask people I face online to be my friend.

I'm glad Nintendo is showing interest in expanding their online service.

Hey, you know how all of you kept asking me why I hadn't purchased a DS?

Now you know why.
