Revolution “a complete failure” if it sells less than the GameCube - Smoke - 26th October 2005

Quote:In an apt development following our earlier Revolution release-date roundup, Nintendo pres Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the system will be coming out sometime after March (the end of Nintendo’s current fiscal year), but still within the confines of the 2006 calendar year.

In a more strongly worded statement, Iwata made a distinctly more judgmental estimation regarding the company’s sales expectations for the Rev: “It [the Revolution] would be a complete failure if we didn’t sell more units than the Nintendo GameCube.” The GameCube has shipped 18.76 million units as of June of this year.

A “simultaneous worldwide release” will also be attempted (”as much as it’s possible”), following in the footsteps of Microsoft’s nearly simultaneous 360 launch window this fall.

They've been selling less units every generation and the Revolution is a direct response to that, so this makes sense.

I find the “simultaneous worldwide release” more interesting. Means we won't have to wait as long hopefully. This will be the first system I buy day one.

I saw this yesterday... the simultaneous worldwide release thing is interesting. MS and Nintendo are doing it... will Sony try too, or will they have a more spread out launch?

As for the launch date, this isn't much help, is it... "anytime from may 1 to december 31".. :) Rumor says june/july, I think, but I don't know how accurate that is. And if it is accurate, this is Nintendo we're talking about, so I don't know how much we can trust them to keep to it... :D

... Smoke changed his username? Why?

WHAT ARE YOU?!

That's funny coming from Nintendo, but they're basically saying 'it will sell more than Gamecube'. Read: Nintendo is shooting for an aggresive approach with Revolution. The entire GC mantra has been "we're different, we are our own market, etc' and with Revolution I think they can prove that as well as attract massive third party support.

2 things the GC did not do. Or atleast, the part about 3rd parties.

As far as worldwide goes, they planned that for GC and it didn't happen. It was still within a month or two though if I remember... I wonder if the Revolution will be regional...

All they need to do is put Nintendogs on Rev and it will sell more than GameCube. That shit's like crack for little girls.

That would actually be a pretty good idea... I wouldn't buy it, but it certainly could potentially be quite popular.

Let's hope that it's more successful this time... it certainly could be, but we'll see.

Nintendo always makes it difficult to decide what is right for the company.

On one hand, I want Nintendo to sell more and be more popular than it is, though at the same time, I don't want to see them compromise their track record for incredible software and dumb down their games to appeal to a greater audience. I don't know what to think...

How about not worrying too much about if they are number 1. Rather, just keep track on if they can't afford to keep making the games they make. They are making a substantial profit, so it really doesn't matter to me if they are number 1.

Well, okay that's a lie. I do want them to do just well enough that I can go over to a friend's house and expect them to have Mario Kart Umpteen.

Revolution “a complete failure” if it sells less than the GameCube - EdenMaster - 1st November 2005

I don't want nor expect number 1 from Nintendo, I'd simply like to see them shed their kiddy reputation while at the same time not pandering to mass audiences by dumbing down their games.

So, in essence, I want to have my cake and eat it too :D
