What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 25th March 2005

Since no one ever comments on it, I have no idea if my constant using of Dilbert comics is something that's funny, or just annoying to most of you.

So, VOTE!

Option A:

Choice B:

I THINK I know which one ABF already loves...

What will be my next sig? - A Black Falcon - 25th March 2005

They're both good, but I think I see what you mean... :)

As for comic sigs, whatever... sigs are just something you scroll past anyway... smaller is generally better, but it's not too hard to get used to ignoring big sigs (and compared to some forums the ones on this one are pretty small...).

H!

Go with option A:

B...its funny :D

What will be my next sig? - Sacred Jellybean - 25th March 2005

B gets my vote.

What will be my next sig? - Great Rumbler - 25th March 2005

I don't really care either way.

What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 25th March 2005

Yeah, you're pwoabably wight...

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 25th March 2005

Calvin and Hobbes is so much funnier.

What will be my next sig? - A Black Falcon - 25th March 2005

Well yes, but Calvin and Hobbes was consistently funnier than any other newspaper comic, so it's not really fair to compare anything to it... :)

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 25th March 2005

DJ needs to see the light, though!

What will be my next sig? - A Black Falcon - 25th March 2005

I thought about posting some, but where do you stop? Almost every one is so great you have to post them all, and you can't post 9 years of a comic in a forum (given they haven't quite put them all up on the website yet)... :)

What will be my next sig? - Fittisize - 25th March 2005

There's always a scanner...anybody else own the entire C and H collection?

What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 25th March 2005

You stop after just picking like 5 random ones.

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 25th March 2005

Ok I'll post some. You'll enjoy them more once you get to know the characters better, but they're still great. And unlike most comic strips there are continued stories from day to day very often. If you do not like them then you suck. :)

Seriously.

This strip reminds me of ABF. :)

What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 25th March 2005

Yeah, those are funny. I think I picked up on EXACTLY what each of those characters is like without any outside help mind you. It's not exactly... complicated...

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 25th March 2005

It's not complicated, but the characters do have certain personalities and behaviors that you're not going to get the full breadth of from just a few strips. And the more you read the more enjoyable they'll become.

Best comic strip ever.

What will be my next sig? - Great Rumbler - 26th March 2005

Those are hilarious! :D

Those weren't as funny. In fact, those seem somewhat "typical" of why I don't read many comics.

Put up the good ones. You know, some GOOD ones?

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 26th March 2005

Yipes

If you didn't find those funny, yet love Dilbert and Garfield (aka the most unfunny comic strip ever created), then all hope is lost!

At least I tried, guys.

What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 26th March 2005

Hey, I liked most of that first batch. Yeesh...

Haven't read Garfield in a long time...

All I'm saying is post the GOOD ones, you know, some GOOD ones?

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 26th March 2005

Those are all good ones!

You crezeh, girl!

Oh, if only you could see how obnoxious that is.

I own at least one copy of every strip, though I don't own every collection (I only have one of the three 'collections of the books that already exist, only with color sundays' and don't have the recent sundays-with-comments collection, but I have the rest and thus at least one copy of every strip, as far as I know)

Pretty much, yes. :)

Calvin & Hobbes is just about the only comic which is always funny... 'not funny'? Those were funny! As OB1 said, if you don't think those are funny you're hopeless. :)

... the last strip was so sad... not just that it was over, but the strip really was a perfect ending... :(

You can't get much farther back than this (the last month or so) free online. Used to all be free, of course... but I do have all the books, so oh well.

What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 26th March 2005

Now THAT'S comedy!

I still think the ones LL showed me long ago were like... classics.

Strong Bad quotes ARE frickin' obnoxious aren't they OB1?

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 26th March 2005

Those are great, ABF!

As I said, on the official site they only let you access the last month or so (March 1994) for free, for the rest they want you to pay... or I'd have posted some older ones as well. But who cares, they're all great... Spaceman Spiff, the dinosaurs, his "I hate the normal panel layout" sunday strips, etc... such a unique strip. Some of the collections can still be found in stores... buy them. :)

What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 26th March 2005

No! I think it's funny but not "pay to read it" funny. Some of the comics I get for FREE I still like better. For example, 8-Bit Theater.

What will be my next sig? - A Black Falcon - 26th March 2005

Sorry, but no. I don't know how much you can compare webcomics to newspaper ones -- they are quite different, after all, often being comicbook or manga inspired with continuing stories, etc, while most newspaper ones are single-strip stuff -- but as much as you can, Calvin & Hobbes is still one of the best. 8-bit? Sure, that's very funny, but does it have the variety of Calvin & Hobbes? No. The great artwork? No.

I didn't actually buy many of those comic collections for myself -- mostly those were gifts and stuff over the years -- but still, I'd definitely consider them worth the money, especially the ones with Watterson's comments in them... and there's just the fact that it's much more enjoyable to read a comic on paper than it is on a computer screen. Like books.

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 26th March 2005

Comparing 8-bit theater to Calvin and Hobbes is like comparing Don Hertzfeld's stuff to Walt Disney's (if Walt had made funny movies, and if Don Hertzfeld used drawings from other people). C&H is the most exquisitely-made comic strip ever.

What will be my next sig? - Great Rumbler - 26th March 2005

THIS is the best comic strip ever made:

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 26th March 2005

Farside comes in second! C&H is the best.

What will be my next sig? - Great Rumbler - 26th March 2005

You're stupid! C&H can't hope to as funny or crazy or the best as much as The Far Side!!!!11! You're stupid if think otherwise!! Stupid and DUMB like you always are!!!!

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 26th March 2005

YOU'RE DUMBED STEPIDFAERCC!!!!!

What will be my next sig? - Great Rumbler - 26th March 2005

C&H is a great comic strip, but I've been a fan of The Far Side for many years now.

What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 26th March 2005

I LOVE the Far Side! And yes, I think Far Side is a lot more unique, at least, than C&H.

Could it possibly be that what is and is not funny is something that can't be determined by anything other than personal taste? :D

What will be my next sig? - Great Rumbler - 26th March 2005

They're both fairly unique, but in different ways.

What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 26th March 2005

For example, I love comedy that involves language. Not "dirty language" per say, though that can be used, but rather comedy that involves using words in weird ways or manipulating the english language in such a way as to indirectly make fun of it. For example, HOMESTAR RUNNER!

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 26th March 2005

You and your homestar runner.

What will be my next sig? - A Black Falcon - 26th March 2005

Far Side is definitely second, but no way is it as good as C&H. Oh, it's funny, but that's all it is... Calvin & Hobbes is more than that. It's got great art (VERY rare in comics!), varying styles, true originality, interesting (and mostly realistic) characters... and humor. But humor isn't the only reason it's great, that's for sure.

What will be my next sig? - EdenMaster - 26th March 2005

The best C & H strips are the ones with Calvinball. Anyone care to throw up some examples?

*laziness*

What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 27th March 2005

Ya know I do wish I could find my actual favorite Dilbertian strips online. There's only the past few months at the official site, which sorta sucks... The "sagas" are the best... or not... I dunno... Well there is the "Dogbert origin series".

Dilbert is great :D

It's even better when you work in an office yourself and can relate to the strips, which is why I'm surprised OB1 doesn't enjoy them. Very often I see something in those strips that harkens to something that's happened where I work, that's what makes them so funny.

Here's one that's obviously not real dilbert, but good for a laugh. Just one.

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 27th March 2005

I think that Dilbert is midly funny. I don't dislike it. If you want good office humor I suggest watching the BBC series The Office.

What will be my next sig? - Dark Jaguar - 27th March 2005

Peter Griffin: Office humor is funny!

Wally: What do you call it when someone gets higher pay and a better title?

Dilbert: What?

Wally: A promotion!

Peter: Well, it's usually funny...

What will be my next sig? - OB1 - 27th March 2005

I don't really work at an office, though. I work at a research center. Technically an office, but not a typical one.
