I thought it would just be a super special gnat hat. Seems it's more... Also, that thing is KAZOOIE! It's frickin' Kazooie in every way! Various Previews (mostly DS) - OB1 - 11th October 2004 Quote:A Nintendo representative said that we could basically look at The Minish Cap as the story of how Link got his famous hat. What the hell? That makes no sense at all. Hopefully that Nintendo rep was just talking about of his/her ass. Quote:The Minish Cap seems like it might be a bit more story-driven than previous Zelda games, since we ran around in a town that was chock-full of characters we could interact with. There seem to be a fair number of noninteractive dialogue scenes as well, from what we played, so there may be a bit more plot to this game than your average Zelda. Awesome. Where in the timeline does MC take place though? I hope to find that out soon. Various Previews (mostly DS) - EdenMaster - 11th October 2004 <img src="http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2004/screen0/920757_20041007_screen002.jpg"> Lighting a match using the stylus :). Oh, I can't wait for Wario Ware DS! Various Previews (mostly DS) - OB1 - 11th October 2004 Probably won't be out in the U.S. until next year though... unless Nintendo decides to delay WW2 instead. Various Previews (mostly DS) - Great Rumbler - 11th October 2004 Feel the Magic XY/XX sounds so awesome. I can't wait for the DS to come out. Various Previews (mostly DS) - A Black Falcon - 11th October 2004 Quote:Awesome. After that preview, I'm leaning towards saying the Four Swords era... as for the other comment, yeah, it is weird. Even if it is in the Four Swords period, I doubt it's before FS and FS has Link with his typical hat so... yeah, it doesn't make much sense... Quote:Feel the Magic XY/XX sounds so awesome. I can't wait for the DS to come out. It does sound awesome. Unique in a very Sega-like way, making full use of the available hardware... just the kind of thing Sega would release (and release in the US -- not a given with the game, even with a minigame focus!)... ... I hope they aren' t expecting big sales... Wario Ware... it looks weird and fun, like the previous games. This year? Yeah, likely not. The Yoshi game looks awesome though... great artwork (that copies Yoshi's Island), and unique gameplay. Looks like a great Nintendo unique concept game that could be a lot of fun (and look great too). Various Previews (mostly DS) - OB1 - 12th October 2004 Quote:After that preview, I'm leaning towards saying the Four Swords era... as for the other comment, yeah, it is weird. Unless the hat dies at the end of the game and Link cuts off its head so that it looks like a normal hat. :D Quote:Wario Ware... it looks weird and fun, like the previous games. This year? Yeah, likely not. The Yoshi game looks awesome though... great artwork (that copies Yoshi's Island), and unique gameplay. Looks like a great Nintendo unique concept game that could be a lot of fun (and look great too). Yoshi looks great but the art definitely isn't as nice as Island's. Various Previews (mostly DS) - Great Rumbler - 12th October 2004 Quote:Unless the hat dies at the end of the game and Link cuts off its head so that it looks like a normal hat. Maybe he goes through an awkward hat phase and instead of picking up a fashionable green elven hat, he goes with a bizarre bird-head hat that talks and through their journey Link realizes that talking bird-head hats are really annoying and decides to go with something simpler. Various Previews (mostly DS) - OB1 - 12th October 2004 ... But the Nintendo rep said that the game shows "how Link got his famous hat". Various Previews (mostly DS) - Great Rumbler - 12th October 2004 Yeah. His famous green, elven hat. It makes since, OB1. When you stop and think about it...like I did. ... ... ... Look, I don't know what that person was taking about! I'm improvising to the best of my abilities here! Various Previews (mostly DS) - OB1 - 12th October 2004 I think my decapitated Kazooie-hat idea makes the most sense. Various Previews (mostly DS) - A Black Falcon - 12th October 2004 Quote:Yoshi looks great but the art definitely isn't as nice as Island's. You'd have to put screenshots next to eachother to prove that because they look the same to me... Oh, and I'm quite happy to see drawn games on the DS. It's got N64 power so I was worrying that the fully 2d game would finally almost totally fade away... clearly there are still some coming out. :) Though obviously for some genres the 3d will do wonders... see: racing games... Here you go: Yoshi's Touch-And-Go ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Yoshi's Island ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The difference is very clear to me. Yoshi DS looks good, but it no longer looks like it was done with colored pencils like Island does. It lacks the visual richness, texture, and vibrancy of Island. Yoshi's Island is probably the most beautiful 2D game ever made. Quote:Oh, and I'm quite happy to see drawn games on the DS. Various Previews (mostly DS) - A Black Falcon - 13th October 2004 Okay, I see what you mean. It's done in a similar style but next to eachother it's clear that Yoshi's Island looks better. Island also looks fully hand-drawn, which is great, while some aspects of the DS game look more 'rendered' or something... it's nothing like DK vs. Mario vs. DK, but yeah, the SNES game is the clear winner. Quote:I just hope that Intelligent Systems will make a proper 2D Metroid game for the sytem. Yeah... though I do have to ask the question about repeating. That is, how often can they repeat that same formula before people get bored and we need another long break like the one between Metroid 3 and 4... It actually looks a lot like Mario & Luigi, a great game but with an art style that left much to be desired. Quote:Yeah... though I do have to ask the question about repeating. That is, how often can they repeat that same formula before people get bored and we need another long break like the one between Metroid 3 and 4... Uh, we most certainly did not need a long break between Super Metroid and Prime/Fusion! As soon as everyone beat SM back in '94 the desire for another Metroid only grew. That's like asking how can people still play Mario and Zelda after all these years. Amazing gameplay does not get old. And your point is made even more ridiculous by the fact that Metroid has seen more gameplay diversity than either Zelda or Mario, relatively speaking. The only Metroid games that aren't a huge departure for the series, gameplay-wise, are Zero Mission (which is a remake of Metroid 1) and Metroid Prime 2. Various Previews (mostly DS) - A Black Falcon - 13th October 2004 Quote:It actually looks a lot like Mario & Luigi, a great game but with an art style that left much to be desired. I was quite underwhelmed by Mario & Luigi's art, as you may remember... I'd say that this is better than that. It doesn't match Yoshi's Island (or Paper Mario), but it's better than M&L probably... I'm just pointing out that after you do things virtually the same way over and over in a short time period people DO get tired of the formula... you can keep doing it anyway (see Mega Man), but most people stop for a while at some point. Various Previews (mostly DS) - OB1 - 13th October 2004 Quote:I was quite underwhelmed by Mario & Luigi's art, as you may remember... I'd say that this is better than that. It doesn't match Yoshi's Island (or Paper Mario), but it's better than M&L probably... Yeah, but not by a whole lot. Who was it that loved M&L's art again? Quote:I'm just pointing out that after you do things virtually the same way over and over in a short time period people DO get tired of the formula... you can keep doing it anyway (see Mega Man), but most people stop for a while at some point. Mega Man is not a tenth as good as Metroid. There's no comparison there. And with MM you have ten games following the same exact formula, one that was fun but up to a point. Let me ask you this: After having played so many Zelda games (especially the Oracle games which are carbon copies of LA in terms of graphics and gameplay), have you ever once said "Man, this is kinda getting old". Hopefully your answer will be the same as mine: Fuck no! And Metroid isn't anywhere near Zelda in terms of number of similar sequels! Here's how I'd brake it down in terms of gameplay for the two series (hell I'll throw in Mario as well), bunched up into the titles that play a lot like each other: Metroid series: 1. Metroid, Metroid 2 2. Super Metroid, Zero Mission 3. Metroid Fusion 4. Metroid Prime, Metroid Echoes That's a 7:4 ratio. Zelda series: 1. The Legend of Zelda 2. Link's Adventure 3. A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages, Minish Cap 4. Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker 5. Majora's Mask 2:1 ratio. Mario (platformer) series: 1. Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Land 2. Super Mario Bros. 2 3. Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario Land 2 4. Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story 5. Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine 2:1 ratio. As you can see, Metroid is the least repetitious of the three big Nintendo franchises. You may argue about some of my choices, but it's still pretty accurate. And for comparison's sake, here's a Mega Man list, for all of the games that I can remember off the top of my head: 1. Mega Man 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 2. Mega Man X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6... You know what? Never mind. :D Various Previews (mostly DS) - A Black Falcon - 15th October 2004 Quote:Yeah, but not by a whole lot. Who was it that loved M&L's art again? Not me. I do like this more than that... Quote:Mega Man is not a tenth as good as Metroid. There's no comparison there. And with MM you have ten games following the same exact formula, one that was fun but up to a point. Sure Mega Man is an extreme case, but some people got tired of that formula a LONG time ago. Yes, the Nintendo games are better and more inventive. This makes that less of a problem. But I do think that it is a good point... you CAN have too much of the same. Redoing the same thing over and over is not necessarially a good thing! See: Mario Party. I think we all agreed on that one. Is Metroid there? Probably not... but it has been getting a lot of titles in the last few years. The 3d ones are one thing, and are newer, but the 2d ones? That formula hasn't changed much... oh it's still great fun, but how many times will Nintendo want to do another similar game? I definitely hope that they keep making 2d Metroids, but I wonder how much they will do... after all, 2d is inherently less flexible gameplay-wise than 3d. Various Previews (mostly DS) - OB1 - 15th October 2004 Quote:Not me. I do like this more than that... Yeah. M&L was great though. Probably not... but it has been getting a lot of titles in the last few years.Did you not see my chart? There's much more repetition in the Zelda and Mario series than Metroid. Complain about them if you have to. I know you don't like Metroid like much because you don't know how to play them, but a lot of (smart) people consider Metroid to be Nintendo's best series, and Super Metroid itself the finest game ever crafted. Quote:The 3d ones are one thing, and are newer, but the 2d ones? That formula hasn't changed much...That is absolutely false, and it shows that you have barely played the 2D games. Tell me, which ones did you play, and how far did you get in them? Did you beat any of them? Quote:oh it's still great fun, but how many times will Nintendo want to do another similar game? The only Metroid games that are a lot alike are Metroids 1&2, Super Metroid & Zero Mission, and Prime and Echoes. That's it. And even then there are greater differences between the like games than you see in the Zelda or Mario series. Quote:I definitely hope that they keep making 2d Metroids, but I wonder how much they will do... after all, 2d is inherently less flexible gameplay-wise than 3d. That doesn't matter because developers still haven't taken full advantage of 2D yet. There is still much more that can be done. |
