Ghost - A Black Falcon - 25th June 2004

A couple of days ago, for anyone who didn't notice (at least I didn't see a thread about this...)

Let's just hope that Blizzard's extremely high standards don't result in them canning this game like they canned Warcraft Adventures (the Warcraft adventure game. Cancelled not because it was bad but because it was average in their eyes.)...

Quote:Starcraft: Ghost delayed, Nihilistic no longer on the project
[UPDATE] Blizzard slips a short announcement of the game's delay into the news mix; apologizes to gamers and promises a "great game."

In a brief statement made public last Friday evening, Blizzard Entertainment (the lone division not affected by layoffs at parent Vivendi Universal Games) officials addressed delays to Starcraft: Ghost, the console iteration of Starcraft. The game was being developed by Nihilistic Software under the supervision of Blizzard Entertainment.

Admitting that the company was "very committed to StarCraft: Ghost as a major part of our lineup," Blizzard president Mike Morhaime went on to say that the delay would allow the company to "polish the game until it meets the high standards that our customers have come to expect from Blizzard products." The game was originally scheduled for a 2003 release, but it suffered a delay that pushed its release to 2004. Now the game will miss its 2004 release date as well.

Morhaime continued by saying Blizzard was "sorry to disappoint players with a delayed launch, but [we] are confident that we will deliver a great game with the additional development time."

In addition, Blizzard confirmed that Nihilistic Software, the studio that had been working on the project since its inception, is no longer connected with the project--news that first appeared on enthusiast game site HomeLAN.

[UPDATE] Blizzard commented further on the news today, addressing both Nihilistic's contribution to this point and the need to ensure that gameplay expectations on the part of gamers and Blizzard would be met.

"We appreciate the work that Nihilistic has done, and we look forward to expanding and evolving the strong foundation that they helped us establish for the game," a Blizzard spokesperson said today.

Concerning the game's progress to date, the source said, "It's still too early to discuss what changes will be made to StarCraft: Ghost, but we can say that after an extensive review of Ghost's development progress, we determined that, given the gameplay expectations for titles in the tactical-action genre, we needed to modify the game's design prior to release."

Asked if Blizzard would ever resort to bringing the title in-house, the spokesperson said the team was "currently evaluating the project in-house, and will release further details after we have evaluated the project further. We do not have a timeline as to when we will be able to release these details, but our focus will be on evaluating co-development options for completing StarCraft: Ghost."

And finally, responding to the degree to which the competitive retail landscape contributed to Friday's decision, we were told that "there are a few factors as to why we made this decision; however, it boils down to the fact that we wanted to ensure that StarCraft: Ghost lives up to the standards that we set for all Blizzard games."

Some great renders...

Oh, if you can't identify those three things you don't belong in this thread. :)

Ghost - Dark Jaguar - 25th June 2004

I gotta say, an Ultralisk front view is almost totally different than an ultralisk top view. You'd never think they were in actually so... narrow.

Anyway...

Ghost - A Black Falcon - 25th June 2004

Aren't those renders awesome? The Ultralisk looks great... like a wooly mammoth/Hydralisk, I guess... :) And the Zergling looks amazing like that. Very cool. Much cooler than I imagine they should... it actually looks tough... :D

Ghost - Dark Jaguar - 25th June 2004

The Zergling is cool, it looks like something out of Metroid. The Ultralisk however looks like something out of Star Wars, while the Wraith looks like something out of Wing Commander.

Ghost - A Black Falcon - 25th June 2004

Wraith? Wraith???? LEAVE HEATHEN!!!!

... over-reaction? Um... maybe... :D But you should know what the general shapes of SC units are if you've played it much. :) Think, what has engines and a tail like that?

One thing about those Zerg is scale -- the Ultralisk is a LOT bigger than the Zergling, but you can't really tell that in those pictures...

As you can probably tell, those are from the CG department and are the quality that you'd see in the CG cutscenes. This is the other finished one from this set of images.

Ghost - Dark Jaguar - 25th June 2004

I was just guessing okay? Not like I see those things zoomed up all the time. Okay what, is it a transport vessel?

Ghost - A Black Falcon - 26th June 2004

Its a dropship of course. Two big engines, that long two-rail tail... maybe the size threw you off? It doesn't really look big enough to hold tanks... :)

Ghost - Smoke - 27th June 2004

So the commies won in the end?

Beautiful BTW.

Ghost - A Black Falcon - 27th June 2004

The Terrans are ex-prisoners, remember... their government was called the Confederacy and used the Confederate flag... so why not a communist symbol on a Marine's armor? :)

Ghost - big guy - 27th June 2004

fuck damn delays

oh well

Ghost - Dark Jaguar - 27th June 2004

... they used the Confederate flag? You mean like the Confederate States of America Confederate? That's a little.... arsenine... And um, how is communism the opposite of a brutal dictatorship? Last I checked, most communist countries were exactly that. Then again, the Terran Federation IS just another brutal dictatorship. Essentially, they got out from under the control of one just to create another.

Ghost - A Black Falcon - 27th June 2004

Go play the first campaign oF Starcraft, DJ... you clearly didn't pay any attention... :S

What did you do, watch all the movies with your eyes closed?

As for the symbol on the armor, I'd take it as just that. A symbol. Doesn't mean any great truth about their government. The guy just thought it looked cool on his armor. :)

Ghost - big guy - 29th June 2004

i don't really remember anything at all from starcraft...aside from some of the units and the races. i don't really even remember the story, let alone images from the cutscenes, so i'm kinda with DJ on this one

then again, i don't really know what is being discussed here.

and maybe that marine is russian, he's wearing red armor afterall. maybe there'll be some blue armored marines running around the game that have american flags, or eagles on them. maybe the bad terrans are the russian ones and the whole point of the game is to investigate their nuclear arms program... oh man, the possibilities are endless.

Ghost - Dark Jaguar - 29th June 2004

No, I did watch them, but it's not like I examine every single symbol they show. I see the flag, I see the guy putting up the flag, but since they only show that flag once I don't pay any mind to the design. I can't concentrate on EVERY LITTLE DETAIL, just the important stuff. Besides that, I forget what the confederate state's flag looked like anyway. Some things I'm good at remembering and others I'm not. Years, outdated symbols, names... terrible with those. Concepts, the story, and the science behind it, that I remember.

Ghost - A Black Falcon - 29th June 2004

Little details are what make things like this interesting... :)

Ghost - alien space marine - 30th June 2004

I always presumed they never sucked them up like Marines, They pick them up like them ships in Halo and drop them,The Tank would be attached to the bottom held by a clamp.

Actually the red guy is with the Terran Dominion, The Omega squadron by the looks of it, Notice all them greek omega symbols.

As for being Communist ,Marines tend to like to put bumper stickers on their armour,Though I wonder if he was a UED remnant who joined the Terran dominion?

The concept was to convey the idea they were red neck space hicks.
But the Confederates are gone , Killed by Zerg thanks to that prick Arcturus Mensk.

The Story I gather will be a prelude to starcraft II.(lets hope it makes it in time)

Duran will probaily play a major role in the story, We may find out who he is? Xel'Naga? But he might bring in the fourth race .

If Starcraft 64 extra missions were canon? That means Alexi Stukov is alive possibly helping Raynor in search for revenge on Duran for not only killing him before but helping in the destruction of the UED fleet and Admiral Dugalles death.

They have added new units in Ghost that might be intended for Starcraft II,The Protoss Vindicator , Terran Stealth Bomber ect...

Damn they better have bombers in starcraft II, Why have air units without bombers?None of the Terran space vessels were well suited for destroying buildings Wraiths and Battlecruisers kind of blow agiast ground,Valkries cant even attack ground. The Zerg had the Gaurdian the protoss ships did good with team work the carriers did good damage on buildings and if you had a Cossair and Orbiter it did excellent.

Yeah, that sounds possible...

Remember, this game is set during BW, so the UED's fleet is still there... it could be UED people who switched sides or something though, I don't know. That marine is probably with Mengsk's Terran Dominion, yeah.

Blizz released a map, as one of the 'Map of the Week' maps, that was a single player canon installation mission. Deception. In it Infested Stukov shows up (as a cameo really). Then Infested Stukov shows up again in the SC64-only mission, and you un-Zerg him... but I don't know when those events happened, so I don't know if this game will get to that point or not. All we do know is where it starts...

Siege Tanks are the solution. Well, those and the Battlecruisers' super gun... that's fairly good vs ground, within certain uses.
