New D&D RTS - A Black Falcon - 6th May 2004

Yup, it's a D&D RTS just announced... by Liquid Entertainment, makers of the pretty good RTS Battle Realms. But, it's not that simple...

New D&D world. Yup, after canning all of the D&D worlds except the Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance (I don't even know them all... the only ones I can think of are Mysteria, Planescape, Al-Quadim, Dark Sun, Ravenloft... bah, I know there are more... anyway, they were all ditched by the time 3rd edition came out...). It's called Eberon... read the article. Very interesting.

Oh, and look at the art! Really, really nice... though we don't see any ingame graphics. I'm sure it'll be 3d but IMO it'd look best with a high-res 2d look like Disciples.

Well at least they're being honest about who their target audience is. :)

New D&D RTS - A Black Falcon - 6th May 2004

Most fantasy seems to like underdressed women, that is true... yeah, they know their audience. Though in this game the Shadow Elven men don't seem to be wearing that much either...

As for the game... interesting direction for D&D to take. That is, it's a very different world... instead of high fantasy, this world has technology. Magic-driven technology, true, but it's skyscrapers and flying cars... could make for a different game (though by making it magic-driven technology they avoid, probably, dealing with things like Arcanum dealt with...)

New D&D RTS - Dark Jaguar - 6th May 2004

Looks like they picked up a few things from Japan, like mixing magic and high technology together. Ah magitek, it's always fun.

New D&D RTS - A Black Falcon - 7th May 2004

But avoid the 'magic vs technology' issue that is somewhat cliche for such things by making it magic-driven technology... slightly different. Nothing that hasn't been seen before, but different for D&D at least. :)

New D&D RTS - Dark Jaguar - 7th May 2004

Magic vs technology has never really been in FF, though yes a number of other Japanese RPGs use it. It's usually a melding, though only a few things are actually powered by magical energy itself in those worlds.

New D&D RTS - A Black Falcon - 8th May 2004

Magic-driven technology is plenty common in Western fiction as well, you know! You just don't read fantasy/scifi books so you wouldn't know...

New D&D RTS - Smoke - 11th May 2004

This world is the result of that contest they held a while back where you had to design your own world and send it in. I'm glad they didn't just go with a Middle Earth or Forgotten Realms clone.

New D&D RTS - A Black Falcon - 11th May 2004

D&D already has so many traditional fantasy universes that if they wanted that I'd want them to update one of the ones they already have and have discontinued, not to make a new one... it'd be pointless when they already have something like a dozen widely varied fantasy worlds... but this is something they don't have yet, so a new world is okay.

New D&D RTS - A Black Falcon - 8th August 2004

New preview. Explains a lot about the game... it sounds awesome. I'm definitely looking forward to it more now. :)
