Capcom announced today a new role-playing game set in the Mega Man X universe, titled Mega Man X: Command Mission. In development for both the Nintendo GameCube and the Sony PlayStation 2, Command Mission takes the characters from Mega Man X7 and throws them into an RPG.

In addition to Mega Man, Zero, and Axl, a new female reploid will join the party. Command Mission's progression is broken up into "Battle Stages," with the heroes returning to base after one is completed. The overall goal is to infiltrate Gigantis Island, where the evil Liberation Army headed up by General Upsilon resides. Put a stop to their madness, and everyone goes home happy.

Mega Man X Command Mission borrows the cel-shaded visuals featured in Mega Man X7. While adventuring, the perspective is over-the-shoulder, while battles have an open 3D environment similar to the Final Fantasy games. Character turns in combat will be determined by an order list, which changes from battle to battle. Action elements, like button combinations for special moves, mix things up during fights, as well.

Capcom will release Mega Man X Command Mission in Japan in 2004, with a North American date following soon after.

Cool. Let's just hope that it doesn't use the super-crappy engine from X7.

And uh... here's a screen from the game:

What the...

For some reason, I wanna break all of those robots.

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 25th September 2003

I just want to ... question ... Capcom for giving us THIS and not X7. :hammer:

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - OB1 - 25th September 2003

That's not a screen from the main game.

And X7 has already gotten some poor reviews, so I wouldn't get my hopes up for that.

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 25th September 2003

I won't because I can't get it...

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - OB1 - 25th September 2003

You're probably better off that way.

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 25th September 2003

Maybe there'll be a PC port like X1, 3, 4, and 5... :)

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - OB1 - 25th September 2003

Nice. Could this finally be the first 3D Mega Man game that's actually good?

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 25th September 2003

Yeah... though I don't know if it'll actually be 3d in the gameplay sense...

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - OB1 - 25th September 2003

It's going to be an RPG.

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 26th September 2003

Yeah, but a standard one or one like the Battle Network games?

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - OB1 - 26th September 2003

I don't think it'll be anything like the Battle Network games.

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 26th September 2003

Why, because of two screenshots?

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - OB1 - 26th September 2003

No, because ign made it sound like more of a traditional RPG. The director of the game said that it'll be a "whole new direction" for the series, and just repeating MMBN would not be a whole new direction.

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 26th September 2003

Ah... well it easily could be good. :)

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - OB1 - 26th September 2003

Let's cross out fingers.

Here's another screen:

Certainly looks a lot better than X7, doesn't it?

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 26th September 2003

But X7 looks fairly good...

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - OB1 - 26th September 2003

The graphics are crap.

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 26th September 2003

No, they're okay... and its the gameplay that counts...

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - OB1 - 26th September 2003

Yeah, and from what I've read that's also bad. Well, the 3D parts, that is. The EGM reviewers said that the side-scrolling parts were good.

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 26th September 2003

So Mega Man continues to fail to adapt to 3d? Kind of sad...

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - OB1 - 27th September 2003

Yeah it's a damn shame. They also complained about the terrible 3D engine. I was hoping that it'd look better than it did in those screens and clips, but unfortunately it does not.

Mega Man X RPG for the Gamecube - A Black Falcon - 27th September 2003

It still looks like it might be a good game... and I won't be able to get it... :(
