Did you know that Prussian general Blücher (think Waterloo) went insane, and thought that he was pregnant with an elephant; and that the father was a French grenadier...? :gay2:

America to stay "One nation under God" - Great Rumbler - 1st September 2004

That's kind of messed up.

America to stay "One nation under God" - Dark Jaguar - 3rd September 2004

And now it's time to listen in on yet another "Darunia calls his representatives moment".

-------------------------------------

Darunia: I want to know your position on important issues! I want to know whether or not those A-holes down the street are going to be EXECUTED for not bending their knees and repenting for their beliefs! I want to know if they are gonna be flatulated in the public square because they won't stop telling me to mow my frickin' lawn! I don't CARE if it's attacking their children! It's good for them! Teaches them not to trust shrubbery! And another thing, why can't I go to Denny's any more? They got this picture up of me and something about gardening tools and a restraining order, and they never let me de-convert anyone any more! They are restricting my freedom to practice my lack of religion as I see fit! And when are ya guys going to get rid of gravity? It's annoying me to no end and it's stepping over government control! And I gotta ask about the lack of Goron-related...

Representative: ....that's it I'm starting a war with Canada or something...

----------------------------

Precious, isn't it? Tune in next time when Darunia calls up his plumber!

Darunia: I WILL BRING A WORLD OF HURT TO YOU!

Narrator: Nerherher, that's funny stuff! Tune on in!

You'd have a better chance asking the devil to help your team win the world series..

After all, it is the devil who controls the physical world, not God. How else could he offer it to Jesus?

But then again, I hardly think the devil would do that for you, considering that it would result in you being less hateful toward God. So, yunno. :)

America to stay "One nation under God" - Darunia - 7th September 2004

Note his condescending, smug Christian tone---he offers no admittance that its possible that neither his god nor his devil exist, but rather he acts (and talks) reassuredly that they do. THIS is what I'm talking about; arrogant Christians---offering no quarter. I'm fed up with their supriority.

America to stay "One nation under God" - Dark Jaguar - 7th September 2004

What condescending smug tone? He just believes in it, that's all. He's just EXPLAINING things to you. When you decide to pretend God exists and then CHALLENGE that diety, it's not like we aren't going to point out what our religion is ACTUALLY like if you get it wrong.

You really DO misinterpret people. You seem to see us in anger tinted glasses or something, interpretting EVERY word we say as some sort of hostile gesture. Why?

Since when have you ever admitted it's possible that God exists? Besides, that's kind of how believing in something goes. You believe in it and disregard other possibilities unless given good reason to change your mind.

Actually, Darunia, I'm quite undecided.

Just pointing out that you were asking the wrong person. :)

I do seem to recall a number of times in which you offered no admittance to the possibility that God and Satan exist, and instead ridiculed those of us who believe by stating once and for all that God, Satan, and even Jesus (who has actual historic records to prove His existance) do not exist. Then you call us arrogant for showing the same attitude to a much lesser extent.

Yes, I know I said I wouldn't get involved, but there's nothing I hate more than savage hypocracy.

America to stay "One nation under God" - Weltall - 7th September 2004

I mean, what the fuck does he want? That every time I should type God* or Jesus*, I have to mark it with an asterisk attached to a footnote stating that there is some possibility neither being ever existed?

Seriously... burning heretics at the stake sounds so damn funny right now.

*may not really exist

THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE IS NOT MEANT TO HURT ANYONES FEELINGS IT IS WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN AND HOW YOU WERE RAISED. I THINK THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE SHOULD REMAIN IN THE SCHOOLS AND NOT BE TAKEN OUT.
WHAT IS SO WRONG ABOUT IT? I AM NOT TRYING TO CAUSE HARD FEELINGS TOWARD ANYONE.:)

America to stay "One nation under God" - Dark Jaguar - 2nd June 2008

Your keyboard is broken.

Personally I've actually recently wondered if it's a good idea to have kids who don't even know what they are saying forced to recite an oath every single school morning anyway.

Think about this for a second. Do first graders really understand what they are saying? Half of them don't even get the words right. Is that really an American ideal to have them just recite hollow words JUST for their own sake? For what reason are they even SAYING all that, and has anyone ever arrested anyone for "going against" this pledge?

Perhaps the best way to get kids to be US citizens should be to teach them the basics of how the US government works (already done) and let them decide for themselves. Perhaps a pledge is pretty stupid.

Oh, and as of late I've realized that not only was the "under god" part added in and not originally there, but it actually does discriminate in it's new form. However, I think the greater concern is having a pledge at all.

Old thread is old.

America to stay "One nation under God" - lazyfatbum - 3rd June 2008

The pledge is something to respect but every morning in a school is recockulous, it's propaganda in the same way we sing the national anthem before a baseball game. On the other hand it's charming, specifically the words themselves which is pretty empowering. Unfortunately the word Indivisible becomes invisible and people under 13 have no clue what they're saying, especially considering the importance of the pledge. I had sex and it was the most awesome thing in the universe, it was so intense I think I broke a toe. Yes that's right, sex. Which I had, if it were a breakfast it would have been prepared by 5 star chefs, if it were a car it would probably be a Lamborghini. If it was a car owned by a chef it would be a Chef Lamborghini.

America to stay "One nation under God" - Dark Jaguar - 3rd June 2008

That's about the way I see it, though in the case of a baseball game it's not so much something required by law as it's just tradition. To the best of my knowledge, that anthem is sung out of free will by the people putting together the game rather than being forced on them by some authority.

America to stay "One nation under God" - Fittisize - 3rd June 2008

National anthems before sporting events are fine with me. In the NHL, the tradition of singing the national anthems of each country (USA and Canada) was created to honour those who served in World War I, and it's stuck ever since. That's totally fine with me. In some American cites, like Buffalo, the Canadian anthem will be sung before a game even if no Canadian teams are playing, and I think the roots of that tradition are very meaningful. In baseball, however, I do have a problem with "God Bless America" being sung in the seventh inning stretch or sometimes instead of "The Star Spangled Banner", especially because there are two nations represented in the MLB. "God Bless America" is a terrible, terrible song and shouldn't be sung anywhere at anytime. You wacky Americans and your fucked up non-sensical songs. Do you think that God is actually going to bless a country that openly allows atheism, gay marriages, and Seann Penn to prosper freely? Oh, and the American tradition of crossing your heart with your right hand during the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner" has gotta stop. It looks completely ridiculous and makes Americans look like slaves to the flag. Cut that shit out.

America to stay "One nation under God" - A Black Falcon - 3rd June 2008

I think the "God Bless America" thing in baseball (during the 7th inning stretch) started right after 9/11, as a reaction to that... it is unfortunate that it never went away.

I mean, the way baseball is supposed to work is that the national anthem is sung before the game, and then you do "Take Me Out to the Ball-Game" during the 7th inning stretch! Replacing that with God Bless America... bah. Baseball should be about baseball. :(

As for the Pledge of Allegiance, my issue is the same as ever... just get rid of the words "Under God" and I have no major problem with it. They weren't in it originally anyway.

It is national propaganda, but it's not like getting rid of that would change much; school curriculums are designed to help national pride anyway, generally. Compared to things people are actually learning the pledge is relatively harmless.
