They are unused because they are badly placed on BOTH controller models. Why not just use a standard 6 button setup? It could easily be set up like a sidewinder's 6 button arrangement. I think those buttons might actually see more use then.

Yes, make it a Sidewinder-style layout. Or Saturn/Genesis 6-button, same thing really. Or even the Saitek controllers with the 4 in the diamond (where the ps2 buttons are) and two smaller ones as 5 and 6 (but they are in the normal 3/6 positions where C and Z are on the Sidwinder, just with smaller buttons than the main 4 -- as opposed to the Sidewinder layout with 3 large on bottom and 3 small on top)... but KEEP THEM ON THE FACE!
