Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - OB1 - 30th April 2005 A Black Falcon Wrote:Why reply just to that part and not to the part of the post that actually matters? What for? That was a reply to Ryan, not me. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - OB1 - 30th April 2005 Dark Jaguar Wrote:Well, maybe Zeus should have had more of a backstory... The various tales of Hercules weren't exactly highly developed. I mean, it was all comic book fare for that era. Yes let's rewrite ancient myth. Great thinking as always, DJ. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - lazyfatbum - 30th April 2005 it's really funny. People say George Lucas is a horrible writer and yet we cant stop thinking about every single one of his characters and still starve for more information on who they are. Last time I checked a bad writer didn't usually accomplish things like that. In my opinion, by making Palps a shadowy character with no motives (he's the only character with no obvious motives) is what makes him interesting. Simply because we dont know his motives we dont know his ultimate goal and because of that, we dont know his limits. Where would he have taken the empire had Anakin not have killed him? Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - A Black Falcon - 30th April 2005 I think DJ hasn't read much greek myths. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Dark Jaguar - 30th April 2005 Hey, Disney did it, why not us? Besides, it's ancient MYTH, and it wasn't really standardized, there were like a bunch of versions there. I'm not saying change history in the sense of erasing the original version. I'm just saying NOTHING is above being upgraded. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - A Black Falcon - 30th April 2005 DJ, you're making a fundamental error. To Greeks, it wasn't myth... at least, not to most of them. No more than the Bible is myth to you. Yes, there were lots of stories, but that's mainly because this is from before most things got written down... so it's natural that there will be many stories, and many versions of the gods. The pantheon is a lot more complex than just listing the gods and saying 'each one was in charge of this'... but even so, the stories would probably be thought by most people to be true. Sure, not all would. But the majority were religious, and that meant believing in the gods, and that meant believing in some of the stories, at least, unless you had some different idea of what religion is... and even then (like Plato, with his world of forms), with a philosophy Christians can come closer to accepting, a good bit of liberal interpretation is needed to get it away from being at least partially polytheistic. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Smoke - 2nd May 2005 I think some people are just natural born conquerors. They have higher ambitions than your average person. People like Alexander The Great and Napoleon. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Smoke - 2nd May 2005 Ryan Wrote:He's such a genius that his protege tosses his wrinkled old ass into a reactor core and his empire is brought down with the help of an army of teddy bears. ![]() Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - A Black Falcon - 2nd May 2005 Yeah, the Empire never had a chance once it messed with the Ewoks... Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - OB1 - 2nd May 2005 There's nothing inplausible about Palpatine's demise. He was killing Luke, and he never expected Vader to toss him over the edge to his death. Also, force lightning is harder to control than you may think... I will say no more! Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - A Black Falcon - 2nd May 2005 Quote:There's nothing inplausible about Palpatine's demise. He was killing Luke, and he never expected Vader to toss him over the edge to his death. Yeah, certainly. It's the Ewoks part that's a bit hard to believe... (the rebels would have lost for sure without them) oh, I like the movie a lot, but when you think about it logically it's a bit of a stretch. Oh well, it happened, and I at least would say that they did it in a way that you believed that it was possible. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - The Former DMiller - 2nd May 2005 I compare the Ewoks defeating the Empire on Endor to the Vietcong defeating the U.S. One group has vastly superior technology and better training, but the other group knows the lay of the land and uses it to their advantage. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - A Black Falcon - 2nd May 2005 It helped the Ewoks that the Imperials wore white armor in a forest and have the least accurate guns in the galaxy... :) Of course, the Rebels distracting the main Imperial fleet and the Emperor's overconfidence played big roles too. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Great Rumbler - 2nd May 2005 I don't think it was that much a stretch. Those Ewoks were pretty smart. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Smoke - 3rd May 2005 They were teddy bears with spears! Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - OB1 - 3rd May 2005 200 pound teddy bears! With human-like intellect! Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Smoke - 3rd May 2005 I think it's the helmets the storm troopers wore. They were defective and steam up inside making it so they can't see out of them. That's why they can't shoot straight! Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - OB1 - 3rd May 2005 Yes. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - A Black Falcon - 3rd May 2005 I thought it was great how in Jedi Knight the Stormtrooper Rifle is inaccurate... :) Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - alien space marine - 4th May 2005 Maybe Palpatine is Anakins daddy! Muahahahah! But do we need to develope Darth Sidious anymore then we already know? Sure if they did no problem with it but it wouldnt bother me either way, He certainly is far more developed now then lets say "Sauron" from lord of the rings or the average power ranger villain. We get he is the power hungry ambitious type , Who wants to take over like Hitler and Emperor Napoleon or the Russian Bulsheviks like Lenin and Stalin,Muhhamad. What is there to know about Palpatine? Perhaps who he was prior to episode I,I imagine he could have a 5 minute flash back like Lord of the Rings Return of the King with Gollum, Were we discover he was once a regular Hobbit like Frodo and Bilbo who was suduced and overtaken by the lures of the Saurons master ring. Darth Revan in KOTOR got even more character devleopment in a sequeil he waisnt even in. Here is pretty much my take on Palpaltine , He was a commoner and saw the corruption on his homeworld by the whealthy politcians ,Saw their hypocracy and bribery saught to rid of them and restore the interests of the common people. He was ran for office but was beaten since he didnt have the powerful freinds and backers to asist him,Started a protest and riot in response demanding a relection on the charge of voter fraud ,Was then arrested by jedi and charged with insighting violence and disturbing the peace, Palpatine was enraged and cursed the jedi for protecting the corrupt local goverment hiding their crimes. Palpatine was then exiled from his world for 10 years, Spent 5 years in a republic prison cell . Palpatine thought to himself realized they only way to win now was to the level the playing feild and get power of his own to compete, He was then touched by the dark side of the force and recieved visions of a dark eerie world he had never seen before. Palpatine become tormented and obessed in finding this world , After many sleepless nights he used every availible time he had the prison libary to research all known republic worlds. He learned from history about the ancient sith wars in the republic , He discoverd that the world he dreamt about was called Korriban a dead volcanic world once inhabaited by ancient people long since extinct, The Sith made it their capital world long ago and many Dark Jedi colonies existed there. Palpatine gained a vision of himself first as a elected local congress men in position he once sought on his world, Then he saw himself as a much older man in the role of a galactic Republic Senator, Finally Supreme Chanceilor of the Republic. Then he saw himself in a vision entering a dark tomb in a underground crypt in a abandoned mausoleum,The he looked apon a Sarcophagus inside the tomb enscribed in ancient writing, The Sarcophagus opened and suddenly the vision ended. Palpatine was both freightend and yet awed by this experience and his obsession with korriban grew ever greater. Palpatine prison term was over and he was let free , He contacted supporters on his homeworld and asked he could have a loan to fund a expedition Palpatine arrived on Korriban with specially hired guides ,He was emotional taken by decayed and lifeless state of the planet , Temples and Statues were collasped and slumped over batterd and scatterd about , The planet howled like as if it were alive screaming out in agony, The air was dry like a barren dessert but cold like winter, The guides warned him that the planet was dangerous and they would only come at the highest wage ,The stories of lossed expeditions and ghosts didnt make Palpatine Budge one bit he couldnt live with himself untill he had seen what his dreams in furfillment. The guides brought him over after hours of treking through the ruins of korriban finally to the valley of the Dark lords ,Deja vu came over Palpatine he recognized his surroundings from the vision, He knew he was close and more so it confirmed to him that it was no mere dream either, The visions were real and Palpatine was total excitment and antciapation what was to come. During his aproach to the tomb by land rover piloted by his guides, Palpatine recollected all of his past and from were he is now , Recalled growing up on the streets of Antarus IV ,A Orphaned child at the age of 7 since the mysterious murder of his mother , He had always speculated what had happend to her was it the act of a murderous theif , His care taker at the orphanage never knew the full story that he was certain. Marcus was his birth name all that remained of his distant early years , He was adopted by a middle class poet and artist Frankist Palpatine the man Marcus conciderd his father and mentor was a established local community worker ,His adopted fathers wages were low often Marcus would be left alone in his room reading about his favorite stories of great revolutionaries and conquerors who young Marcus Idolized as heroes he viewed them as noblemen coming to abolish and dessolve stagnate corrupt systems liberate people from opression was awed by their exploits. Marcus father disaproved of his reading habbaits and told him many of his idolized heroes were mad man and thugs no different then the politicans who were abandoning and cutting away the funding to his social work. The depressed and down trudden father would comfort himself by reciting his favorites lines of poetry often he would also write his own which would secretly speak out about the injustices of the world , Frankist always believed free expression and public out cry would always prevail and bring reform. Who will bring Reform father? Marcus asked sarcastically? Frankist was puzzled by his young sons response, he replied softly the "people". Frankist someday someone is gonna stand up and rally the people together ! The Jedi? Marcus whisperd? Politics and the troubles of the lower class are not of any concern to the Jedi order, we are of low priority to them, Grumbled Frankist. Why not you? Asked Marcus. I am too old for that all I can do now is try to keep the word around and remind the people, Cried frankist. I will! Marcus declared! His adopted father grined and smiled at his son. From that day on the boy called Marcus Palpatine dedicated and strived to do all he could and achieve what his father could not. Traversing Korriban Palpatine soon arriving at his crossing point , Grumbled at his past young idealistic naivete ,The republic and the galactic senate is a failure ,Incapable of bringing everlasting change and progress despite whatever reforms laws it may bring its power base fades the further you get beyond the inner circle of Coruscant, The true power is with the criminal enterprise and corporate trade alliances who now sudduce and buy off any politician they see fit. My father believed that change would come due to his faith in the system , He too was a miss guided fool , Wasted his years writing meaningless dribble on papper complaining but he had never taken action never did what had to be done. The jedi although well intended they may be are remote and small compared to the republic they fight a endless futile battle , All through history the republic always was in disarray never was there a golden age again since its restoration centuries ago. Sith ages ago always brought strife inside the jedi order before their eventual defeat but they always returned regardless in the end,The cycle was no different then life and death all inevitable and futile. Palpatine came to the realization he was standing on the very soil once graced by the dark jedi ,He too Intended on entering a burried locked away tomb , Still uncertain what it all meant ,But he knew he was meant to be here that he was certain of. This is the place Palpatine pointed at calling at guides, The stoped the vehicle and steped off to examine the site. The men rubed away the dust covering a inscription at the mausoleum , "What does it say" shouted Palpatine! A guide replied " Here lies your Destiny"! Palpatine :" How do you know that" ! The guide removed his mask and helmet and revealed his face , His eyes glowed a faint yellow his skin pigment a red and dark striped exterior, Horns protruded from around the crown of his head. Palpatine eyes raised in shock , Who are you! He demanded! I am Natarus Maul diciple of the brotherhood of Lord Draconais the one which you seek . Palpatine : The Tomb the Sarcophagus in the vision! Maul: You are correct. One of the still masked guides placed a gem stone into a empty socket in the mausoleum entrence ,The door slowly slide open with a thud. This guide then removed his mask and helmet and revealed himself , He seemed to have been of the same species as Natarus Maul almost indenticle as if he was a twin , But his left eye was missing and covered in wounded flesh , This one was far more disfigured then Maul and somewhat shorter in height. "I am Sentaurus of the Valix" ," Come enter oh chosen one we have been waiting for the day you would arrive "! Sentaurus walked into the dark gloomy shawdowy mausoleum fearlessly. Palpatine: I take it he is your leader? Maul: No! Master you are! Palpatine: Master? Maul: you are the Chosen one destined to lead us to salvation ,Out of isolation and exile. Palpatine: Chosen one? Huh!* laughs* Maul: Pardon master is that not why you sought this place? Palpatine : I sought this world cause I thought I could find answers to my problems instead I find more mystery, More things to ponder at night about. Maul: Fear not soon all will be made clear. Palpatine : You sound as though you are a Jedi! Mauls eyes glared with fury and further intensified his devil like appearence Maul: The Jedi lies and falsehood have no place in my heart! Palpatine: You are Sith I presume? Maul: I am not worthy enough for that title at this time my master , I hope soon enough I can prove myself and attain that mantle at your side. Palpatine became nervous and disturbed by this revelation , All his life he stood agiast the darkness now he feared he would become it. Palpatine : The Jedi stand for the weak and vulnerable, The Dark Jedi always sought to devour them and stump them out! Survival of the fittest and greatest goes agiast my sensibilities. I dedicated my life to fighting this kind of madness! Maul : Really? Lord Draconais would not have chosen you as his vessel if he did not see any value in you. Palpatine shocked and puzzled remained silent. Maul: You know the truth Marcus Palpatine you know that the righteous path is fruitless and futile do not deny yourself this opportunity that has presented itself to you. Maul raised his hand and hurled a volt of electricity through his finger tips. Palpatine paralised in shock fell over face down in the dirt , Maul and the other Valix Draconei Diciples carried him into the mausoleum.Palpatine was still concious and awake aware motionless in horror being carried about unabled to move a muscle. He was then held on to the wall underground in a rectagular room shackled onto its side , Palpatine stood lumped over held up by the chains of his bounds. The room was dimly lit by torches , Cobwebs hanged stringed across the room , The walls were lined with hard black stone, Strange ghostly chants howled about. Palpatine heard the firm footsteps and chatter of the Valix diciples,He remained In total disbelief as how he ended up hiring them believing they were professional traveling guides. It was no coincidance they were indeed quite familiar with this forbidden world , Few even dare even say the name of Korriban much less come here , To some it would be like desiring to enter hells gate. Palpatine looked down the across the room and droped in amazement in realization he was stretch out on the wall of the extended area in the room he forsaw in the vision , The Sarcophagus and burial vault of whatever dark person lay here Palpatine now had the displeasuring of sharing space with. Someone enterd the room , Palpatine looked over to his right shoulder to the doorway. Excellent I see you have recoverd ! My brother Maul is already quite proficient in the force already taking you down with such power , Just studying a broken artifact and its carved texts ,We found many hidden relics inside locked deposit vaults in this mausoleum. Unfortunately most of the languages inscribed here are unfamiliar to us , My brother found a broken tablet written in galactic basic , My greedy you younger brother Maul after he scaned its content smashed it into pieces and grinded it into dust to prevent me and the others from learning from its teachings! Sentaurus exclaimed. Palpatine : Poor you! Sentaurus : with all due respect master I am not the one bound to the wall right now. Palpatine : Atleast I am not the one living in fear of my younger sibling! Sentaurus faced roared with rage , Kicking Palpatine in the chest knocking the wind out of him. Then slugging him across the jaw! Sentaurus : Silence puny vessel I will not bow to your taunts untill the master has taken possesion of your body! The batterd Palpatine began to struggle in his chains , calling out for for help! Sentaurus : Fool ! This planet is barren and unhabaited no one can hear you , No one can save you from what awaits! Ratarus Maul and the other valix diciples rushed into the room , To find out what was transpiring. Maul : Damn you Sentaurus ! You have damaged the property of the master , He bleeds and boils with pain! Lord Draconais will be most displeased! Sentaurus : Brother its not what you think I assure you! Maul: Cease him and gut him alive! He will be a ceremonial sacrifice to celebrate the masters rebirth! Maul pointed toward Sentaurus and comanded his followers to grab hold of him. Sentaurus drawed his blaster but his arm was quickly dismemberd by the flying blades of the diciples, The Rush toward Sentaurus tossed him to the ground spearing him repeatedly splattering his insides and bodily fluid across the floor. Sentaurus screamed in agony and utter horror as he was literally filleted alive. Palpatine : I can see family bond is of no value to the Sith. Maul : My allegiance is to you my master not even somthing as small as family can get in the way of my goals. Palpatine : You are dedicated to your work no doubt by this stomach churning display , But your dedicated to no one but yourself , I am not your master never will be! Maul: New order is needed in the galaxy and my lord has promised to bring it! Self service is the primary foundation of the sith ,Striving foolishly for others is waste of energy and without reward, All will fall to the lures of the dark side inevitably you indeed already have begun that path oh Marcus Palpatine your fate is sealed as it was prophecised so long ago. Palpatine : My father died for a lossed cause , Why fight the dark side anymore?!!! All of its followers live in joy and bliss sulking of the rewards it gives. The followers of the light only recieve hardship and sorrow in exchange for there uprightness , There life toil merely to fall apart by the next generation to come. Maul : Yes ! I can feel the darkside flowing stronger in you now! Palpatine : I will slash and cut all my rivals on Antarus into pieces and spit apon their bones! With the darkside of the force at my side they cannot stop me!I live in denial of my true destiny no more! The Chains bounding Palpatine riped open freeing him from restraint, The diciples caught him as he fell forward. Palpatine steped towards the Sarcophegus , The diciples rushed to his side placing their amulets apon the empty slots on the Sarcophegus , Maul placed Sentaurus amulet in Palpatines hand. Palpatine moved the amulet into place and droped into its socket ,The Sarcophegus began to shudder. The lid covering slowly opened itself revealing the skeletal remains of a cloaked figure, with a Lightsabre at its side. Palpatine : Now what?!!! Maul: Stretch out your hand over the remains. Palpatine complied with the request , Maul pulled out a serrated edge knife, He slit it across Palpatines hand causing blood to flow and drip down on to the remains below. All of a sudden a bright glow appeared hovering out of the Sarcophegus and then flew into Palpatine causing him to fall backward , The diciples caught his falling body. The three diciples who came to Palpatines aid burst into flames and desintergrated in a fiery inferno! Maul stood in fear for himself. Maul: Master did they displease you? Palpatine: No ! Maul: Why destroy them then? Palpatine : They are of no use to me now, Only the mightiest may be my aprentice. Darth Maul : Am I your aprentice oh great one? Palpatine : Untill proven other wise you are indeed. Maul: my lightsabre? Palpatine : In time, All in time. Palpatine pulled out the sabre in sarcophegus and put on the cloak removed from the Remains. His new menancing face emerged ,"I am Darth Sidious"! "Neither am I Draconais or Marcus Palpatine" neither exists anymore we are one being now and forever. Darth Sidious : Come my aprentice come " Darth Maul " there is much work to be done. ![]() Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Dark Jaguar - 5th May 2005 Actually Sauron is pretty well developed, just not in the LOTR novel. There, he's an evil that seemingly came from nowhere. In the past, as told in The Silmarillion, he's fairly well developed, and actually he's a subordinate to someone a lot more powerful, Morgoth. Actually, I find Morgoth a much better baddy. Sauron only has some basic explanation (he was brought into darkness by Morgoth basically), but Morgoth actually has a LOT of storyline near the start dedicated to his fall from the light into darkness. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - lazyfatbum - 5th May 2005 "I compare the Ewoks defeating the Empire on Endor to the Vietcong defeating the U.S. One group has vastly superior technology and better training, but the other group knows the lay of the land and uses it to their advantage." great insight by Miller. I was hoping somebody would pick that up. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Dark Jaguar - 5th May 2005 Well, they really didn't win so much as the US left... It would have taken a while, but the US would have won if they just stuck around. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - A Black Falcon - 5th May 2005 If you believe that, DJ, you're crazy. We lost. It was pretty much an impossible war to win. Leaving, and letting the other side take over the country you were trying to "protect" (not that there was much of any of that going on), is losing. Sure, we won the battles, but there was no way to win the war... it just took a really long time for the US to admit it and give up. So many problems... starting with misunderstanding Ho Chi Minh (he was a communist, yes, but he was a nationalist first... we didn't seem to understand that...) and going from there... Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Great Rumbler - 5th May 2005 We probably COULD have won, but not by using the tactics we were using. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - lazyfatbum - 5th May 2005 It was a crippled war. The "CIA's war". Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - lazyfatbum - 5th May 2005 hey Marine that was a cool story, did you just make it up, or do you have any Star Wars novels you're pulling from? Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - OB1 - 5th May 2005 He made that up. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Dark Jaguar - 5th May 2005 Not according to what I've seen... Namely a lot of stuff from the History Channel. Of course they aren't always perfect, their idiotic "conspiracy" show for example, but generally the veterans are of the opinion that a withdrawel wasn't about America being beaten so much as political pressure to do it. Near the start things were going bad but near the end they were really starting to make some serious headway. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - OB1 - 5th May 2005 DJ, you need to learn how to use quotes. Allow me to teach you. [ quote ] *insert text that you're quoting here* [/ quote ] Now take away the spaces in [ quote ] and [/ quote ] Simple! Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Great Rumbler - 5th May 2005 I may get to see Episode III on IMAX. Wish me luck! Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - OB1 - 5th May 2005 Luck! The soldiers on the ground wouldn't know the whole picture, you know... and the History Channel... good channel, but I'd definitely say that they're biased. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - Weltall - 5th May 2005 We 'lost' Vietnam because those running it were too concerned about what everyone else thought about their war. We were trying to fight a politically-correct war, and the process of up-to-date casualty reports was coming to be. On top of that, there was tremendous ignorance sweeping the nation in the form of the counterculture movement, the drug-addled morons of America that sadly are many of today's politicians. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - A Black Falcon - 5th May 2005 Yes, we should let the military do whatever it wants, millions of civilian casualties be darned... ![]() Oh wait, they did that anyway? What ELSE do you want, the complete obliteration of the whole of southeast asia? Seriously... sure, limits we put on our army hurt our success. But winning via bombs doesn't work. Never has. Only when combined with force... and our ground force was not working. As I said, we fundamentally did not understand the Vietnamese. They weren't fighting to defend Communism, they were fighting as nationalists defending their nation from invasion... our delusions about worldwide communism spreading step by step across the world led to this (as well as other) major tragedies. We never should have gone in to "help" France in the first place. Early Episode III review from Kevin Smith - OB1 - 5th May 2005 Dude, but they were commies! They had to DIIIIIE!
