America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - OB1 - 29th September 2003

Quote:Argh! It only matters as much as you want it to, but the fact remains that it is, however trifling, A DIFFERENCE between both countries. That was my ONLY point. We can spend another WEEK fucking arguing that, and it won't change.

That's a very small difference. Everyone in Europe speaks at least two languages, and only around 60% of the population of Belgium speaks Dutch, and that's their own version of it (like how we have our own version of English and Austria has their own version of German). Your whole argument was that Canada and the U.S. are more different from each other than Holland and Belgium or Germany and Austria, which is completely untrue.

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 29th September 2003

Yeah, as OB1 said, your 'difference' is minor and its really quite odd to push it as some huge cultural divide...

And as for immigration, completely wrong. Go back, read your American history, and think about it again... look at the history of immigrants in this country. How we've been a nation of often non-English speaking immigrants since soon after the founding of the country. They had to learn English soon? Wrong. Actually, these days they have to learn English sooner than ever before, I'd say... remember, before they could go into their immigrant community and live without any English at all, since large numbers would speak their same language... it took several generations to really make them American, and English speakers. Now? Because of the media and everything there is far more pressure to learn the language...

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - Darunia - 29th September 2003

your 'difference' is minor and its really quite odd to push it as some huge cultural divide...

Well, you finally admitted that it is a difference...which was my point all along, but now you're putting words in my mouth, telling me that I've been overstressing it when all I wanted to do was make you admit it. All of Europe is bilingual...well no shit sherlock. Somehow that effects Canadian-American resemblances? I know Canada isn't the only bilingual country, I just said that to set it apart from America. Christ; a goron just can't win nowadays.

*Extends peace offering to Canada*

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - OB1 - 29th September 2003

I think Darunia forgot that this is a message board where what you say is always on record.

Quote:Oh, so the world-leading, English-speaking USA is more alike to the tame, blingual, backwater Canada than:

-Austria and Germany?
-Czech Republic and Slovak Republic?
-Belgium and Holland?
-Malta and Italy?

Methinks not, gentlemen.

So tell me, Darunia, what exactly did that post mean?

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 29th September 2003

He meant the exact opposite, of course! Isn't it so obvious?

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - Darunia - 30th September 2003

Touché. Allow me to repudiate that statement.

OB1 sides with a Canadian in a Canada vs. America debate. Talking about sleeping with the enemy... selling your soul.

*Withdraws peace offering to Canada; vows bloody, savage war to the end for their insolence*

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - OB1 - 30th September 2003

I'm siding with Canada because I've actually been to Europe and know that Canada and the U.S. are more similar than Belgium and Holland or Austria and Germany?? Erm

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - N-Man - 30th September 2003

I would just like to spend some time in this ridiculous thread to point out that people in Quebec are mostly are not bilingual, but rather unilingual francophones. The area with the highest bilingual population is the Montreal-Ottawa axis, and two-tonguedness is proeminent amongst Franco-Ontarians and the anglophones of the Montreal suburbs (aka West Island). Basically, Frenchies living in Ontario, and Anglos living in Quebec are more likely to pick up both languages. New Brunswick is also reputed as the only bilingual province in the country, and I suspect a high number of Acadians speak both their native messed-up French as well as English.

Official numbers tell you 43% of all Quebecers claim they are bilingual, but to tell the truth, all the "bilingual" people I've seen outside Montreal speak English about as well as I speak Serbo-Croat.

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 30th September 2003

Huh... really? I'd think it'd be more like much of Western Europe where most everyone knows two languages at least semi-decently...

As for Darunia, its just so easy to prove you wrong that arguing with you really isn't very fun. :)

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - Darunia - 1st October 2003

Espèce de merde.

Regardless of what you say, it still is a matter of opinion what countries are more similar than others. You think that Canada and the USA are a lot more alike than any two European countries. I beg to differ. Alas, an impasse.

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - OB1 - 1st October 2003

Wait, a few posts ago you said that you didn't think that, and then I quoted you saying that you did think that and you admitted defeat! Which one is it??

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 1st October 2003

Darunia, Darunia, Darunia... why must you prove my point so obviously so many times? It'd really be best if you didn't try... making a fool of yourself in such a blatant way is never pleasant to pick apart. Its too easy to be fun...

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - alien space marine - 2nd October 2003

I think Darunia needs to buy his own island and create his own country, Then he can beg for foreign aid!

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - Darunia - 2nd October 2003

Which one is it??

I don't even know anymore. :p

*Abdicates*

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - alien space marine - 2nd October 2003

Do I get a cookie?!!

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 2nd October 2003

Darunia, couldn't you at least present one consistent opinion?

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - OB1 - 2nd October 2003

You do the same thing sometimes, ABF. Change your opinion depending on the argument.

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 2nd October 2003

But not like that, with no reason and no explanations...

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - OB1 - 3rd October 2003

Sure ya do.

Well okay, not quite like that, but sort of the same thing.

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 3rd October 2003

Definitely not like that. If I change an opinion I give a reason! If I'm not sure I'd say so... unlike Darunia here who decided to strongly advocate one position and then completely reverse his arguement and argue for the other side with no explanantion...

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - OB1 - 3rd October 2003

You've changed your opinion simply for the sake of being on the opposing side a few times in the past.

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 3rd October 2003

I don't think so...

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - OB1 - 3rd October 2003

Well of course you don't.

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - alien space marine - 3rd October 2003

Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!

Canada rules yah!

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 3rd October 2003

Because I don't!

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - OB1 - 3rd October 2003

But of course.

Silicon Knights is located in Canada.

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 4th October 2003

Strategy First, the makers of Disciples, are in Montreal... :)

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - Darunia - 4th October 2003

They had a hand in making Cossacks, too, which as we all know is the best RTS ever.

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - A Black Falcon - 5th October 2003

Best ever? Not even close. I've played Cossacks... its in the same class as Age of Empires. I think I like AoE a bit more, actually... and of course Blizz's RTSes blow away the rest of the genre by a very long distance.

America vs. Canada XXVII (Formerly "Best song ever?") - OB1 - 6th October 2003

Montreal is also home to Ubi Soft's Montreal Studios, who made the terrific Splinter Cell and are making the super-friggin-insanely-cool Prince of Persia (I have the demo and it's so damn cool you wouldn't believe it) and the X-Box version of Rainbow Six. Them's some talented folks.
