Full Version: Fable: The greatest game ever? Or a good idea that was delayed into oblivion?

Fable. It was originally supposed to come out soon after the launch of the Xbox. It was touted as one of the major reasons why you, as a gamer, absolutely had to have an Xbox. It was much talked about and it seemed it's release was close at hand. But it was not to be. The shadow of delay fell over this beloved jewel of programming genius. At first it was a only a slight delay.

"Just wait a few months", they told us. But a few months turned into half a year. Half a year turned into a year. A year turned into two years. Now the release is tentatively set for Winter 2003. But with winter quickly approaching will we see two years grow into three? Will we finally be able to play this game, which according to it's creator, will be beyond our imagination? Or will continuing delays sink it into oblivion?

All doom and gloom aside, well most of anyway, people have been waiting a long time, me being on those, for this game and if it isn't one of the greatest games ever then I will be very dissapointed. I hope it doesn't end up like Malice, which was delayed into oblivion, because if Fable turns out the way Peter M. says it going to be one heck of a game.

Details about Fable, for those who care:

Forge a Hero Based on Your Actions: Age and evolve a hero or villain through the actions you choose and the path you follow ¡V be it for good, evil or in-between. Ply the way of the sword and see your muscles bulge. Weave the dark arts and witness power crackle at your fingertips. Skulk in the shadows and watch your skin bleach.

Engage in Intense Real Time Combat: Collect battle scars as you duel with a world of cunning foes and deadly creatures. Master an array of deadly weaponry as you hone the art of blade-craft. Hunt your quarry using subterfuge and stealth. Weave death from the elements as you harness the dark arts of the arcane.
Build Your Living Legend: Through deeds and actions, build a name for yourself across the land. Recruit allies and followers. Gain glory or notoriety. Make friends and enemies. Interact with a living world of people, places and event all reactive to you. Hero or butcher? Who will you be?

Explore and Shape a Living, Evolving World: Champion or manipulate an ever-changing land with competitive and cooperative heroes, dynamic weather systems and deformable environments. Interact with teeming cultures, creatures, and citizens from various towns and cities.

Hone Your Character with Scores of Unique Skills and Extras: Master new abilities and add possessions as you develop.

Never Play the Same Game Twice: Once you finish your adventure, go back and try the experience again, forging your character and thereby a new tale with unexpected twists and turns, new skills, powers, influences, allies and enemies.
Fable was never supposed to come out at around the X-Box's launch. It was always "far off". It should be amazing.
Well, it may have been closer to Spring 2002, but was it really necessary for you to spoil my interesting narative?
Sounds good, but not worth $250 (as a consumer that doesn't own X-Box).
By the time the game comes out the X-Box will probably be less than $150.
And it'll probably come with 5 new games...and Lincoln Continental, just to sweeten the deal.
Fable should come out before fall 2004.

It already comes with a controller.
The Lincoln is for the racing games, though...

You missed the witty attempt at humor, you silly little man.
I got the joke, but merely laughing and saying "You got that right!" wouldn't have been any fun, I had to come up with my own witty response.
.....

Bruce Campbell is cool.
Yes, he is.

The quote I have in my post is ironic in that it is entirely true. :)
So Sam was kidding, right?
That quote is an exerpt from the forward of Bruce Cambell's book. It was written by Sam and Ivan, but it was wrote like it was an Editor's note by one of the editors of the book who was trying to get Sam and Ivan to write a forward to the book. So, yes he was kidding, but it's still completely true and that's why it's so funny. :)
It seems like they are trying to hint that the puppetMASTER'S story is more interesting, but the entire history of puppets in storytelling says otherwise. No one pays attention to puppetsmasters in a puppet theater, just the puppets. No one cares about the humans in Muppet movies. Pinochio is the main character of his story, not Gepetto. Megaman is the main character in his story, not Dr. Light. Cloud is the main character in his story, not Sephiroth.

In other words, of COURSE the puppet is more interesting than the puppet master could ever be. That's why the puppet master made a puppet, because that person couldn't interest people on their own.
DJ, just stop. Okay? Don't try to analyze the quote. That's not why a posted. It isn't supposed to make you think. It's just supposed to be funny. That's it. That's all. So, just stop.
Chuckle
I'm wondering if you are joking about taking my post serious now. I know I'm risking once again falling prey to not getting your sense of humor (which to be honest is what makes it funny, when people "don't get it"), but just in case... (showing how insecure I am). I was doing that in the spirit of hilarity. Don't you think my analysis was amusing, at all? It's what I was going for anyway... Not sure who any of the people in that quote are, so maybe I touched a nerve and that's why you didn't get it. You don't worship them by any chance do you?

Seriously, I'm not a very serious person, so maybe you should read what I say as in "wow that's hilariously offensive" or in this case "wow that's hilariously nerdy". Heck, there was a joke at the very start of that last sentence if you look closely.

Anyway, OT, I sure am looking forward to Fable. Indeed, this and Panzar Dragoon Orta were my original reasons for getting an X-Box in the first place. All the other good reasons that popped up came later. I sure hope it's a very LONG adventure, which with all the development time I do believe it will be.

Okay, just checking. :)

Despite your claim that your posts are obviously humorous, you have the amazing ability to make it look like your serious. Which, IMO, is slightly disturbing, but a very effective tool if do say so myself. If someone accuses you of saying something offensive or being overcalculating you can just go back and say "I was kidding, though!". Signs of a genius...or a deranged madman. It's hard to tell the two appart sometimes.

Anyway, back on topic...off topic...something...oh never mind.
Delay by itsself isn't bad... its just delay followed by delay by delay with stories of troubled development that is.

Fable looks great, and I haven't heard anything of any development ... issues ..., so it should be very good... and it sure looks like it will be. I'd probably get it if I had an X-Box...
Haha, that's true GR. In fact OB1 actually once accused me of lying about kidding, which I found hilarious because to me it just read like a joke. I think maybe it's because I have a very good way of really getting into the character of whoever would actually say that. In fact, I think my main failing is the fact that recently, I've totally abandoned marking my persona switching with "Persona whatever: " stuff to indicate a persona switch. I've kinda lost track of where I begin and where the other me's end. I'll start doing the persona thing again, if I/we can even remember all the names. I'll check the persona-dex.
I still believe that you have pretended to be joking about something in the past to cover up some sort of embarassment or whatever.
He probably has, but he can cover it well since its so hard to tell when he's joking...
Well believe as you will, as I really can't proove that I have ever even played a game (I could be a creepy person just reading up about these "games" to lure someone to an abandoned shack and do horrible genetic experiments to them). However, I'll put it on record that I am a person who doesn't lie. I kid, but I always try to make it obvious that I am, and immediatly correct the situation if anyone takes it seriously. I would assume someone who believes in honesty would understand that trusting others to be honest to a naive extreme is a part of it. Then again, it's still very laughable to me that someone would actually assume something so obviously written as a joke would actually take it seriously to the point of accusing the other of lying :D. I won't defend it beyond that because it's like, well, KNOWING something as a fact since you DID it yourself and having to argue the truth of it to someone you could never proove it to. Eh, oh well.

Anyway, Scientist Persona (this particular persona is male): Now, off to continue my experiments, starting with making love to this lawn mower!

Member of the Government Agency of Condescending Paternalism Persona: No, don't do that.

Other Persona: Yeah, don't do that, it hurts. Take my word for it. This message brought to you by the Society for the Prevention of the Mangled Willy.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force reference!!
Your main problem is that its usually only obvious to you. :)
Exactly!
And as a result unless you do something this will keep happening to you.
