Well here's a whole Sakurai video on it.  Imagine if you had a TV that was shaped like an apple.



It's interesting he didn't even mention how completely bizarre US marketing was for all his Kirby games, what with how they kept redrawing Kirby with intense "mean face" to try and "edge" the puffball up a little... even though he's a pink puffball and literally has no edge.
While they are slightly different, I don't think that making Kirby look slightly angrier on the cover really is THAT huge of a tonal dissonance versus the content in the game...

Well I wasn't trying to imply it would lead anyone to thinking it was something like Doom, I just think it's hilariously out of place in such happy go lucky games.  Also, Sakurai's gone on record clarifying that any time Kirby "defeats" or even eats an enemy, they just reappear somewhere else in Dreamland.  He's basically force-teleporting them, which makes sense if all of these creatures represent dreamers or ideas.
