Full Version: FF7 Remake is NOT a remake

The advertising was a little misleading here, and my title is not meant to be an insult, so here goes.

FF7 Remake is an alternate universe total reimagining of the story with weird whisper ghosts floating around interfereing with the original events and with a battle against fate itself, where you murder fate and change history.

I don't think Aerith is going to die this time. I can't say that for sure, but I think that's what all this fate nonsense is about. This is basically that 90's remake of Planet of the Apes going on, in game form.

Yes, it's THAT drastic.  Is that a bad thing?  I'm not sure yet, but now I know why the game's being split into numerous parts.  It literally isn't the same story any more.  This is- different.
You mean it’s not a remaster of the original, it’s a whole new game

A "reimagining" if you will.  In an alternate dimension.
FF7 is one of those cornerstones I never beat. Not for lack of trying. I started some time last year, but lost steam. I didn't even finish the first disc. Hell, I couldn't even tell you the last thing I was doing. Shameful! I can tell you that Aerith hasn't even died yet, if that gives you a frame of reference.

BTW I bought it for PS1 because I'm stubborn about getting "the authentic experience" that everyone else got in 1997. Better late than never!

Come to think of it, I'm not even sure if there was ever a port/update, so maybe that's redundant. I think it got released for PC at some point? But I don't play PC games, so there you have it.
This game is a 30-plus hour remake of the first six hours of Final Fantasy 7, with 20-plus hours of padding added to the original game. It is also, as DJ says, apparently not really a remake as we know them, but an alternate-universe retelling of the story, with hints that certain characters know about how things went the first time. As much as I have never really cared much about FFVII (I have only played an hour or two of the game, though I did watch that movie... Advent Children, right.) it obviously is one of the most famous games around so I know enough of the core points to do. But anyway, the concept of an alternate-universe remake? That's interesting, in theory. I doubt I'd care enough about it to stay interested through what is looking to be a very long series, though -- this first part took five years to finally release and covers six hours of a long game. At this rate it will take many decades to finish the whole FFVII story, especially if they expand it all out this much... I would say that I wonder what they do next with this theoretically interesting, if very Nomura-like-overcomplex, twist on the plot, and I kind of do and kind of don't, but as much I wonder how long it will take to release. :P

There's a port for the Switch, which I bought and played through twice in quick succession. It has better graphics, and lets you cheat in various ways (turn off random encounters, always max HP in battles, and 3x speed). As someone who owned it on PS1 and played it over and over, I can say for sure you're better off going with the updated release. It's superior across the board, without depriving you of any of the original experience in any meaningful way.

I actually used the 'random encounter' cheat to make the game harder, not gaining experience and AP from random battles really makes you have to strategize. I never tried doing a low-level run on the original version, because having to run away from 500 battles is not my idea of a good time.
Brood and slash, until it is done.
