Alright, sluts. Time to post your guilty pleasures. It can be songs, movies, books, video games, anime (all of it, all the anime), w/e you wouldn't dare tell a person you know in real life but you just might cough a hint of it to a bunch of pasty nerds that you've somehow known for ~20 years, oh fuck what am I doing with my life

I'll go with songs. Back in the day, we used to post our Winamp playlists to share musical tastes, and/or brag about how many mp3s we'd managed to accumulate. Not so here. Join me in shame and humiliation!

God damn if this song isn't some kind of Beckified wypipo anthem. 'Makes me want to get up and jig. It reminds me a little of Shake it Off or that 80s Oh Mickey song.

SHUT THE FUCK UP, IT'S CATCHY *runs and hides*

I was introduced to this song when trying to find fake nudes of Alison Brie. I stumbled upon a look-alike video that played this song in the background, I guess it was significant to that show she was in, Community??  I couldn't watch the thing (the show), couldn't stand Joel McHale. And but so this song somehow hits me in the feels and makes me think of what high school dances would have been like if I weren't in fact a loser who was staying at home playing N64 and crying along to the theme of Banjo-Kazooie.

Love to hate to love to hate this song. This guy is violating all sorts of man codes by wearing eyeliner and expressing FEELINGS. I remember driving once and looking over and there was a car full of teenagers all singing along to this, all swaying their heads with big smiles on their faces, like wtf this is supposed to be a sad song.

TRICK ENTRY, this song and video are in fact cool and good, maybe I'll get into it later

POST OR GTFO
Burn the man code, enjoy what you enjoy.

I enjoy these two songs unironically.  Even if the second one has some vaguely racist subtext.

Is that Cranberries song supposed to be bad? I think I've heard it before. I like their song Zombie, myself, but that song doesn't seem too embarrassing.

Yeah, Africa's pretty cringeworthy. I was out with a girl once who told me her sister used to put on that song at the end of the night, if she was hosting a party, to get people to start leaving. Sorry if this is dense, but what's (vaguely) racist about it?

Why are those guys playing on a giant book that says Africa? What is the book of Africa?? Surely all you need to know about Africa isn't enough to be contained in a couple hundred or so pages.

I haven't read these in a long time, but there will always be a place in my heart for Johnny the Homocidal Maniac comics. They start out as a fun blood-bath, then devolve into pseudo-intellectual solipsism. I can forgive this, as Vasquez was probably in his 20s when he wrote them. At least he's articulate!

I'm less ashamed to still like the Squee comics and Invader Zim, both of which are still hilarious.

in closing, when looking for JTHM images, I stumbled across this, which lmfao Vasquez would hate this

I have no idea what I should or shouldn't be embarrassed by any more.

I (still) like the movie Titanic. There I said it.

True, a lot of this is subjective. I think we can establish a base-line where something is ostensibly embarrassing. I think I already broke that seal with ICP. xD
If we're coming up with media that's absolutely, objectively, inarguably terrible, I thought of something!

NO, this isn't a guilty pleasure of mine!

oh my god the singer explicitly says he wants a lolita girl, someone shoot me
Someone splice that video in with the scene in Sixth Sense where the father looks on in horror and disbelief as he watches the video footage of his wife poisoning their daughter.
That... well that's a pedophile song. Then again, wanting a "Lolita" experience is apparently very presidential. Thanks a bunch, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump.
I thought it was a run-of-the-mill, "I want a perfect gamer/anime/nerdy girl that's just like me in every way, and very sexy too"... actually, that's not very run-of-the-mill, that's just pathetic. But I had no idea it was specifically a pedo song. *facepalm*
You're the one that told me about it! I didn't even listen to it when you mentioned "lolita", it was all I needed. You know, the book? The one you had to have read in high school in lit class? The one about the pedophile and the underaged girl? Named Lolita? Like the plane, that Bill Clinton and Donald Trump flew on, to an island the locals call "pedophile island"?
Maybe my brain is dumb, but I thought this was the exchange:

Me: "Ew, he wants a lolita, what a scumbag"
You: "Obviously he wants a lolita, it's a pedo song, after all"

Guess I misread Dunno Incidentally, I tried reading Lolita earlier this year and just couldn't stomach it. Too creepy. The narrator specifically visits orphanages to ogle young "nymphets", and claims that Lolita seduced him. I know certain art should provoke and challenge our sensibilities, but I just didn't see anything redemptive about it in the 100 or so pages I read, aside from admittedly well-written prose.

That's the last time I take recommendations from lazyfatbum!

You didn't have to write a book report on it?  Lucky you.  Yes, the main character is utterly disgusting.  I believe the point of the book is to provide the point of view of a monster and how someone can still see themselves as good, but it really is hard to stomach, especially for those of us with certain histories.

The prose is often listed on top opinions of "best written prose of all time", so I guess there's that.  It's kind of like how "Birth of a Nation" (the original) is constantly cited as one of the most influential movies of all time in terms of cinematography, but the movie is still a pro-KKK racist propaganda movie.
In Japan the word lolita seems to be used much more broadly than it is here.  It definitely also refers to pre or barely pubescent girls or drawings of characters in that age range, but there's also a thing in Japan called (gothic) lolita fashion which is only partially related to that -- it's pretty victorian-esque.

Anyway, as used in that song the actual character clearly isn't prepubescent so I wouldn't call it a pedophile song.  It's terrible and I had to turn it off after like a minute, though, for sure.  The word may be referring to that kind of character, unfortunately way too much anime does have some of that kind of thing in it, so it could be.  However, he says what, "lolita and steampunk"?  While an image of a girl in a (Playboy style) bunny outfit is on screen?  I don't know what is meant, it's not clear. Given that the girl's not super young it could be the fashion style.
Anything named after pedo stuff is highly suspect.

...yes, sounds perfectly innocuous.

I've seen anime fans try to use this rationale before. "You don't understand! It means something different in Japanese culture!" ...a culture that's unabashed about thinking schoolgirls are sexy? Not buying it.
Pigtails and overalls and glitter are child-like too... that doesn't mean it's not creepy if it's a fully grown woman wearing those things to be sexy.
Bingo. If that's Japanese culture, then Japanese culture has issues that need addressing.

And what does puberty have to do with anything ABF? Who cares if the girl is pre or post pubescent? That's- not really relevant when it comes to pedophilia.
The literal definition of pedophilia is sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children. Culturally it's often used in a more general 'anyone underage' sense but I don't think that's the actual definition.

Anyway, Japan is weird, in both good and bad ways. On that note, it's probably pretty easy to say that as far as guilty pleasure things go for me, it's got to be all of the terrible, terrible anime and manga I have read and watched...
The definition of a word, any word, is whatever everyone understands it to mean. I really don't care about splitting hairs on this one.
Yep, I'm the firm belief that language is more descriptive than prescriptive. As a communication tool, wouldn't it have started that way? The first proto-humans to speak wouldn't have been taught by anyone else.

ABF, tell us about the animes you saw and what made them embarrassing.

Fortunately (?) I documented this in detail on this very website, years ago, back when I watched a lot of anime.  Here is one of the threads: https://www.tendocity.net/showthread.php?tid=6387 ... actually that's probably the last thread, I started watching anime a lot less after that.  It takes a lot of time and has way too much creepy content in it...
