What's bad about the new one? I haven't watched it yet...

It's a show about war where the main characters find out that if you want to win you have to cross every line you had.

Ugh, that does sound terrible. Star Trek is about a good future! People keep trying to insert too much violence and edge into it, because a lot of people like that stuff -- see the success of the pretty bad modern Star Trek movies for a fantastic example of this -- but that doesn't make it okay, or in any way representative of what Star Trek is supposed to be.
And yeah, now that I think about it, the one thing I remember hearing about this show is what you reference, that they were going to make it dark and such. Star Trek has only done this well once, and even there, the later seasons of DS9, I didn't like that as much as the classic Trek style of Voyager (which, remember, is my favorite Trek series for sure!).
It's really sad that Star Trek has found success by abandoning all of the morals that made the series great to begin with, pretty much.

Even DS9's darkest moments were done with characters that were trying to find the best way to do things. This new show has characters that consider morality itself foolish and self-defeating. Win or go home. I'm here to win, not to make friends. You know, reality show morality. It's no wonder the younger commentators describe literally any speechifying moments from old shows as "too cheesy".

It’s more battlestar galactica then startrek , the Orville is more Trek then new Trek.
