From GAF:

Well the press conference is over and there was absolutely no sign of any new, original Miyamoto game. Talk around the net is that this stupid Pacman game is it. I cannot fucking believe it. EAD isn't even trying anymore.

Quote:Have you ever wanted to be one of the ghosts in Pac-Man, not the yellow disc himself? Well, now's your chance.

Thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's EAD development studio, and cooperation from Namco, the Big N announced a massive treat for retro gamers at today's pre-E3 event.

Pac-Man for the Nintendo GameCube will include the original, 1980 classic. But, this time around, four players can work against each other and together. One person controls Pac-Man, while three others position the ghosts. The player responsible for Pac-Man plays on a Game Boy Advance; when he's caught, the controller gets passed onto the ghost-gamer who snagged him.

There's no release date or media for Pac-Man on the GameCube yet, but we'll have more soon, hopefully. Stay tuned.

But it sounds fun...
It's the same exact pacman that came out over two decades ago!! But this time you can control the ghosts!! OOooooOOOoooH!!!!

Did you watch the video? This along with Nintendo's new Zelda games lead me to believe that they've lost their fucking minds.
You're so negative, OB1. They only spent about 30 days making this thing, it's not like they've been working on it for years. I'd be willing to bet that any games EAD is working on won't be shown until Space World.

Besides, that Pacman game sounds cool!!
Did you read any impressions from the show?

This is the big secret game that Miyamoto was talking about! Before he unveiled the game he said that he had a new surprise game to show everyone, and that they were "all very fortunate to be here today." Everyone was expecting Mario 128 or something and instead he shows Pacman! And no, not a graphical update or anything like that, but a perfect port of the original game, just with added multiplayer support.

If this was just a little mini-game or something then I'd have no problem with it, but it looks like this was the big secret game that Miyamoto said would be unveiled at E3. I still can't believe it. I hope there was a serious mistake and that the real secret game will be shown tomorrow, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
It sounds fun. That is good. Why be so negative... I don't get it...

And anyway the final version will obviously have more than just that mode... or will be REALLY cheap.
Why am I being so negative?? You must not care about Nintendo games at all if you're asking me that.

Miyamoto has been hyping up this big, secret, original Gamecube game for months now, and what to we get? Something that's the exact opposite of big and original.

Imagine, if you will, if Blizzard's lead designer had mentioned a few months ago they were going to show something big, original, and innovative at E3. What would you do? You'd go crazy with exitement. Then imagine that the game ended up being an online version of asteroids.

How would you respond?
...but I always wanted to control the ghosts...
I don't remember an original Miyamoto game being hyped for E3... guess I missed that meeting.
Yeah you did. Miyamoto mentioned several times how 2003 is going to be the year of innovation for Nintendo (as opposed to 2002 which he called the year of the sequels) and that he would show off some innovative, original titles at E3. He also mentioned it during his trip to Europe (which is also when he announced the Gamecube MGS game).
Yeah, I seem to remember NOT hearing anything like that.

There was Fear and Ground Zero, but the report never said that they would be shown at E3.
Well it's true.
I also agree that I remember no promise of huge revalations here... I didn't expect huge new GC games to be announced and they weren't. Why were you expecting that? Saying "year of innovation" means nothing...

And anyway Miyamoto works on lots of games at once. If this one is truly this simple (which I'd doubt they'd do for a full retail product... its a great mode of the game but is that it? If so it should be cheap.) it shouldn't take long... I'd bet on that not being the whole of the game, though. :)
You guys can proceed to kiss my ass:

:ass:

I love being right.

Quote:Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of some of the most highly-regarded series in the history of videogames, recently sat down with Japan's Weekly Famitsu magazine for a chat. In the interview, Miyamoto revealed that he wil be unveiling a new "remarkable" game at this year's Electronics Entertainment Expo and it will take advantage of Game Boy Advance-to-GameCube connectivity.

Recently, Miyamoto stated that he'd like to work on a new Zelda game, in addition to the Mario and Pikmin games he's currently cooking up. Whether the title set to be shown at E3 is one of these three titles, or an original project is cloaked in shadow.

This year's Electronics Entertainment Expo will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in smoggy Los Angeles, California from May 12th to the 14th. GAF will be there representin', so expect full coverage from the show floor.

That's it! Pacman is the "remarkable" game that he mentioned!!
You thought he'd have something new and great, but we didn't so I don't see how that makes us wrong... :)

And Pac-Man sounds very cool!
"New and remarkable" isn't the same as "new and great"?? Remarkable is even better!
"Remarkable" just means "worthy of remark". :p
*slaps GR across the face*
He's right though.

And a multiplay Pac-Man with playing as the ghosts IS a new idea... the only way it could be better is if it was online. But we all know the chances of THAT.
I'm sorry but you're completely insane if you think this stupid Pacman game is remarkable.
Its not. Its just a cool little game with one of the first real decent uses of a GBA-GC link.
Exactly! It's not the big remarkable game that Miyamoto was talking about!
Oh well! Big deal! I sure care!

I wasn't expecting anything so I wasn't dissapointed. Actually I still think its a cool idea...
Well some of us actually follow Nintendo news and were hyped about this. So suck it.
Actually this game sounds very fun. Too bad it's not, oh ONLINE!!! :cuss:
I already said that.

Nintendo deserves it!
:chainsaw: :hammer: :bang: :woo: :samcut: :samcut: :samcut: :samcut: :samcut: :samcut: :dragon: :dragon: :dragon: :dragon: :dragon:    :dragon: :dragon: :dragon: :samcut: :samcut: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :woo: :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: :chainsaw: :chainsaw: :chainsaw: :chainsaw: :chainsaw: :jedi:
This meager "fun" factor is vastly outgunned by the "fucking waste of a DVD" factor. Shiggy's losing his edge.
Wait until you see the rest of this game before you judge it!
You make it sound like this is only the first part of the game. How do you know?
I don't. But generally games have more than one multiplayer mode as their entire content. :)
Certainly. But what Nintendo showed was probably the biggest part of the game.
http://www.n-philes.com/php/epvfpkkyfukpuppfuvye.php

What do you have to say now, Mr. Negative?
I say the same thing I've been saying so far: I'm sure it's fun but Nintendo is insane. They're losing in this war, and instead of giving the public something they want (like a Pokemon RPG or an all-new franchise) they give us a multiplayer version of a 30 year old game. They've completely lost it.
He doesn't dissapoint, folks!

Did you notice it says that the people playing ghosts on the cube get a 3d-graphics maze? :)
OOoooooOOooooh!

Doesn't dissapoint how? Because I'm not wrong about this yet you refuse to believe otherwise?

The fact of the matter is that this is definitely not helping Nintendo's current situation. If this was just a little side game I'd really love it, but it got the most focus out of any other game shown at Nintendo's press conference.
... because it fits exactly into Nintendo's 'simple but fun' policy, maybe?

Or because its actually a lot of fun to play?
Good grief, are you really that thick-headed?? This is not going to help Nintendo get out of third place! MS shows Halo 2, Sony shows MGS 3, and what does Nintendo show? PACMAN!
You are just being ridiculous... who said anything about it competing with Halo 2? That's not the point and you know it!

It just looks like a great game. I'll look forward to see what happens with it... it'll need more than just that to be worth full price, but as the main multiplay mode that looks quite promising...
Yeah it does look like a cool game, but you're still not paying attention.

At each E3, all of the big gaming companies hold a press conference to lay out their plans for the next year or so and show off their big titles. Last year Nintendo's main focus during their press conference was Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine, and Zelda. This year their main focus was PACMAN. Compare that to MS who wowed audiences by showing off an eight-minute video of Halo 2 as well as some other huge games (like Doom 3, DX 2, etc.). Sony showed off MGS3, announced the PSP, and some other things.

I watched the press conference. It was a disaster. Miyamoto got up on the stage and said that the audience was extremely lucky to be there and hyped up the game he was about to show. Naturally most people thought "Mario 128!" or something along those lines, then Miyamoto unveils a perfect port of the original PACMAN, with added multiplayer support. As you can imagine, the crowd didn't exactly go wild.

I'm going to repeat this one more time, ABF. If this wasn't the main focus of Nintendo's press conference and one of their big titles at E3 I would not be dissapointed!
Quote: Good grief, are you really that thick-headed?? This is not going to help Nintendo get out of third place! MS shows Halo 2, Sony shows MGS 3, and what does Nintendo show? PACMAN!

LOL, OB1 that was a good point.:)
Thank you. ABF knows I'm right but since he's alrady taken this stance he refuses to admit that he's wrong. I can't believe I'm even arguing about this.
Neither can I.

I cant wait for all of these GBA/GC games. The multiplayer aspects are completely revolutionary, believe it or not. These "Cheap but fun" games are experiments for Nintendo to test the waters for their ideas on bridging the Gameboy to the home console. If all goes well, we can see massive Gameboy connectivity in the near future with high profile console games.

And later, when we first see the Gamecube 2, i'll bet one American dollar that it has this concept built in from the get go. Also, now that Nintendo will be using Sega's online base, i'm sure we'll see LAN and multiplayer games online for Gameboy as well as GC (2) software. Combine that with the idea of small, cheap, multiplayer ...easilly transferable games... hell, you figure it out. It's not that hard to see what Nintendo's doing.
Yeah... I really don't see why you hate it so much OB1. They are a new idea for games... which sound great, if you have the hardware. I don't see why you hate it so much... the idea sounds good... and the games sound fun. As long as the price is right, and they add some kind of single player mode (or make the price even lower), I'd be happy with them... and it'd get me to buy a GBA, I bet. :)
I'll give you three reasons why I don't like this.

1) It's not going to push consoles. People want great games that don't require a hundred dollar controller or four.

2) It completely defeats the purpose of the GBA. I want to be able to play Four Swords wherever I want to, not in front of my tv! Plus I'd much rather use a GC controller to play games on my 'cube.

3) Relates to number 1. How many people that own a GBA and a Gamecube know three other people with GBAs that would make getting these games worth it? I know one other person who owns a GBA. How about you guys?

Now that having been said, I think that the whole GBA-GC thing is pretty neat, but it definitely should not be Nintendo's main focus. Instead of showing off great new first-party titles at E3, Nintendo showed off some GBA-GC mini-games (at least I hope they're mini-games). It's as if they really really love being in third place.
Pac-Man requires ONE gba, not four. The three ghosts use normal NGC controllers... it says so in the preview I linked. Guess you missed that... :)

And GBA has sold tens of millions of units. NGC has several million. I'd think linking them to make NGC's attractive to GBA users is a good idea... and this DOES do this. What does? Well... the GB Player bundle, for one. And Pac-Man and the Zelda games. Sure, most GBA users won't get NGCs just for the games... but I'd think the games would help both GBA and NGC sales as people without one or the other intrested in the game (since in these the GBA is integral to play) might buy the other. Not a bad strategy...

The only annoyed people are ones like me with no GBA... or you, for expecting WAY WAY too much... and hating Pac-Man. :chainsaw:

:D

Oh, and it doesn't defeat the purpose of the GBA at all! It just finds a interesting use for it... I don't see how it defeats the purpose to play a game that wouldn't work as well on small screens (such as these games) on the large one... its not like there aren't lots of games for GBA! This is a hybrid... think of it like that and not as a GBA game. It makes more sense that way too... :)
Four Swords and Tetra's Trackers requires four people for the most fun. I never said that I hated Pacman, it's just that this is absolutely pathetic as Nintendo's big game of E3. And I have "WAY WAY TOO HIGH" expectations because I wanted to see something good instead of a port of one one of the oldest video games ever made??? Oh yes, you really hit the nail on the head this time. Rolleyes

High GBA sales mean nothing to the Gamecube. GBA owners are not going to buy Gamecubes just to play little games like Four Swords and Pacman. If Nintendo wants to get GBA owners to buy 'cubes then they should make GBA games that get significantly enhanced by playing them on the 'cube. The other way around makes no sense at all. Think about it for a second.

And it does defeat the purpose of the GBA because instead of getting an awesome single-player Zelda game from Capcom we get a couple of multiplayer Gamecube Zelda games which you can't even play anywhere else except in front of the TV! This whole thing is just a gimmick that Nintendo thinks is somehow going to revolutionize the gaming world. Nintendo is losing it. They really are.
It was totally unexpected, cool, and one of the best uses of a GBA as a controller in a real game I've seen so far. That's enough for me...
The difference between disappointment and satisfaction is expectation. While Nintendo certainly hyped up its audience for something significant, you didn't have to get excited for it. I didn't. Nintendo (Miyamoto specifically) has promised before to deliver something big and remarkable that was so innovative that it required hiding from its competitors. That promise was made between SpaceWorld 2001 and E3 2002. Nothing that has been announced has fulfilled this promise in my mind. I don't feel hurt. I think what they were talking about was FLUDD in SMS, and I'm okay with the fact that I disagree with EAD on the remarkableness of a water hose. I seem to be in the majority on that one. This seems to be a very similar situation. I did read that interview, but in this case, my skepticism was warranted. The vast majority of writing I've read on the internet seems to fall on the side of disapointment, which sends the message that Nintendo cannot produce something enticing enough in the simplicity direction to turn the collective head of the gaming audience away from its path to more detail and complexity.
Well, it's not looking good for Nintendo with that E3 showing. I read in GMR that Microsoft's owning Rare is "a thing of the past" and that Rare may go to multi-consoles...it even dared venture that Perfect Dark 0 could come home to us. NOW THAT'D be awesome.
That would be... insane.
