Hmm, it could be interesting, but I have no idea what sort of game it's supposed to be.

At this point, I'm pretty sure there's nothing left of old Rare in the current shell. The old members are too fractured to really stand out any more, so that's that. At this point, Retro's pretty much become Nintendo's Rare replacement.

A lot of the key old members left some time ago, so yeah, I'm sure whichever few remain aren't nearly enough to have much of an impact. :(

Rare is definitely a very sad case, but that story -- of a game developer being bought, and then destroyed, by a large publisher -- has happened over and over and over, so it's nothing uncommon or surprising, sadly. Big gaming publishers seem to just not quite understand how to manage the talent in studios they buy, so they ruin things and leave those companies in ruins or closed.

And yeah, one frequent result of that is studios like this one, developers made up of staff from companies like Rare. As for this game though, not much information in that article there... what kind of game is it? ... Ah, the article linked in that article has a trailer. It's a 2.5d spaceship game? Not what I would have guessed... looks fun, perhaps.

I believe that Microsoft's purpose in acquiring Rare was to hurt Nintendo and give the Xbox an advantage, not to actually utilize Rare as a developer in more than a token manner. After all, the GameCube was actually (for a while, anyway) legitimate competition to the Xbox. Acquiring Rare took a lot of wind out of Nintendo's sails as Rare was one of the pillars that kept the N64 from an even more obscure existence.
The N64 wasn't that obscure. Comedians reference it.

You're right that the main reason they do is Goldeneye.
Over 20 million sold in the US isn't obscure. It is true that Goldeneye was one of the best selling games on the system, though (8 million sold worldwide, and remember that the N64 had only 32 million sold worldwide)... but anyway, while it is perhaps true that MS bought Rare to hurt Nintendo, with the amount of money they spent for Rare, they had to have had expectations for more popular games from them. I mean, they paid Nintendo quite a bit of money to get Rare... and didn't get much back for it.
......its a fully realized cellphone game.

I'm not saying its bad, but its not going to be on my todo list.
