I had a interesting computer repair job the other day..
The customer had a virus on there machine.. It cause a popup to appear while windows was running stating that the computers harddrive and ram was missing.

Wow, those Sony Vios are amazing! They boot up to a full Windows XP media center environment with out harddrives or ram. Nice!

Regardless of how simple it is to you, to a layman, it probably sounds plausible. Just remember that because you might not know, for instance, how every part of your car works, it doesn't make you an idiot.
Yeah, but this would be akin to a warning light on your car saying that your engine and transmission are missing WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD.
Eh, maybe, but people don't take an interest in computers (upgrading them, worrying about specs, etc) in the same way they do cars. Most of them have one to do things like check facebook. Internet is really the main appeal for a computer for a common person, not much else. They were probably used more for word processing pre-internet, but I'm probably talking out of my ass.
