Planet GameCube sez:
Rumors have been floating around the Internet that Nintendo is holding a press conference in New York this upcoming Tuesday.

While we can confirm that there will be a press conference, we’re not exactly sure what will be revealed at this time. We’ll have up to the moment updates within the next 48 hours.

Phew. Now that I got that out of the way, I would like to say that I don't know what to think about this. The fact that it's in NY, not Japan, says it's news for the Western gamers mainly. All of the big Megaton rumors we had heard were important for Japan, but not really here. I don't even know if it will be something actually new and surprising or if Nintendo will just announce that Zelda is coming out in March.

I hereby declare this the OFFICIAL MEGATON COUNTDOWN THREAD! SPAM IT BABY!

2 days, so 23- 47 hours!!!
There is no megaton.
Yeah, I'm beginning to think Nintendo is just being a gigantic Japanese cocktease Erm :S
Well, lets see what happens here within the next few days. Who knows. This could be big, or it could be a severely overrated routine press conference.
I stopped believing in the mysterious megaton announcement, but I do think I believe PG's claim of an announcement coming up. I doubt it's shaking any Earths in the near future, but hey, maybe it's something like including every Zelda game ever made with pre-orders of Wind Waker, including the CD-i ones (hey, for posterity), an apology for allowing the CD-i ones to exist, and 4 swords with new bot player option. Eh, here's to dreaming :D.
nintendo and their announcements are about as big a cocktease as my ex girlfriend...and man, was she ever a cocktease.
To my knowledge, all this "Megaton" nonsense wasn't even started by Nintendo. From what I've heard, it was started by a small Japanese magazine and blown out of proportion by everyone else.

If I'm mistaken, and Nintendo did tease the cock, then yeah, they suck and should die.
Nintendo teased no cock.

This was all started by someone at Gaming-Age.
Now that I think about it, I believe the rumor was "blown up" at Gaming-Age. The VJump magazine was first translated there and then the hype just exploded. I'm sure the IGN boards caught the fever and then IGN reported that a large rumor existed about a "megaton" announcement late in the year. My guess is, sadly, that Vjump was just trying to generate hype for its Jump Festival in December, which turned out to contain nothing beyond new footage of Final Fantasy:Chrystal Chronicle. Nothing "megaton" by any means. Now that the Festival (and the year) is over, I think we can officially bury the megaton rumor.

Now, about this CES stuff... "technological breakthrough" and all. Again, I think this is a rumor, and nothing more. However, it coincides with the Nintendo conference, so it is POSSIBLE that maybe somebody got mixed up and said "CES" instead of "Nintendo Press Conference." I'd imagine that the press conference will be much like others: it'll start off with how well Nintendo did over the holidays, delve into sales numbers, reiterate upcoming games for the next two quarters, and possibly announce future technologies/software. If there's anything big there, it'll be on the level of Nintendo's online plans and/or software that will support Nintendo's online plans. No "Nintendo is buying Microsoft" or "Nintendo is going 3rd Party." However, if it turns out to be that big, could someone help me remove my head from my ass?

HAHA, it's a SMILEY!

and even if nintendo is teasing no cock concerning the "megaton" they have done it enough in the past to warrent all allegations.
I'm beginning to think this has something to do with the online network since Jim Merrick is no longer heading that up. They must have finished it up, and I wouldn't want to wait another 5 months until E3 just to announce something that the others already have had going for a long time.

Oh, and I think the megaton thing was blown way out of proportion too. But it's funny ha ha, so we must continue with the exageratedness of it all.
The thing is Nintendo hasn't officially announced a press conference for Tuesday, and why would they hold it in New York in the first place? The owner of Nintendophiles even told us specifically to not post this because there is absolutely no basis for it. I've really given up on all the Megaton rumors, and I think this is just another groundless rumor.
Kinda reminds me of that Dolphin Countdown that FM3 started a few years ago. We waited until December expecting to hear some big Dolphin news and nothing came until what, the following May?
From nintendojo:

Quote:Nintendo to announce backlit GBA
The word from CNN is that Nintendo will be announcing a backlit Game Boy Advance unit tomorrow morning.

While this has been speculated for several months now, this is the first confirmation of an actual, supposed date. Furthermore, analysts suspect the hardware may be on store shelves as early as March. We'll provide an update accordingly. (wj)

Hmm... I guess this is it, huh? If the light is good and the price is right, I just might trade in my GBA for this new one. If CNN is right, that is.
If this is all they are announcing, I'll be very disapointed. I already have a well lit GBA, thank you very much. And if I didn't, I would buy a GBA player (which I still plan to get someday). This is a waste of engineering time and money.
Well if I could get around $20 for my GBA, this would be a cheaper alternative to getting my GBA Afterburned (or whatever).
But why release 3 different products that all play GBA games?
Well, I suspect that it's for money :D. Really though, I think the non-lit GBA will be phazed out after the lit one's first price drop. This is all assuming that CNN has ANY idea what they are talking about.

In any case, if the GBA was re-made, I have to say any theories of added buttons and prosessing power are something I doubt Nintendo would do. Upgrade an existing system? Yes. Make what is effectively a new system that would have games that could only be played using it? That's just plain risky. The GBC managed to sell, but that was released a LONG time after the GB was released. The GBA managed to sell very well as well, but it was a much more major improvement (plus, I think Nintendo would want to drag the GBA's life span as long as possible). Things they COULD do however, besides backlighting, would be to add the infrared port (not very likely, but it would make it fully backwards compatible with the GBC). They could also fix the various backwards compatibility glitches with titles like Tarzan and such. Finally, they could do what they should have done back when the GBA was first released and give it Super Game Boy mode support.

Well, in any case, since I afterburned my GBA, it would be upsetting to see this released, except for my one special situation. I have a little brother and sister who had their GBA stolen, so I could give them my old afterburned one and buy this one for myself. Thus, the cycle of hand-me-down computer hardware in my family would be complete.

Backlit GBA. In a new shape. For the same price ($70) as the GBA is now. March.
Sounds like a waste of money to me. I still might get one eventually, though. And the clamshell design... is that very ergonomic?
Have the Game Boys EVER been ergonomic?
Wanna know what the Megaton was really all about? Here's a quote from ign's mailbag (January 31st):

Quote:Megaton

Dear IGN mail guy,
What's the deal with the megaton announcement from Nintendo? Was the GBA SP it, or it's something else? Thanks as always for your time.

Matt responds: Trust me, you don't want to know the full story behind it. You wouldn't be able to handle it. Okay, okay, since you've insisted. Japanese V-Jump Magazine started the rumor, saying that in November it would announce a "Megaton" project that would surely sell lots of GameCube systems. It was being funny. It turns out, though, that the so-called "Megaton" was nothing more than a GCN project featuring some characters from the magazine. Ha. Ha. Funny, no? You may no begin to cry. But please do so silently, and in the corner.

Man...

Well..........................................................have they?
I always found the GB and GBC perfectly comfterble... the GB was nice and big, anbd the GBC was decently comfterble... even if it is a bit small. GBA? Its ok, but those shoulder buttons really needed better thought...
I can't believe Nintendo anounced the GBA SP nearly 2 weeks after Christmas. That was either very stupid or greedy on their part. They knew a ton of GBA's were going to sell on Christmas. But NOOOOOO! We are Nintendo and we have to keep things very secret so people will waste money on our inferior products come the holiday season!

It really wouldn't have been that difficult to have planned a launch for the GBA SP in November of last year, or at least have announced a front lit GBA was coming sometime after Christmas. You cannot give me another plausible reason other than greed or stupidity with Nintendo's decision to keep the GBA SP hush hush.
Nintendo wants more money... it annoys the consumers, but they ARE a company, so why would they want to harm their own product sales in the biggest sales time of the year? They wouldn't! Annoying? Yes... but surprising? Not at all...
Hmm, I didn't think of that, but that's certainly correct. "The people" don't hear about this and buy the inferior product (well, the new one does lack full support for all the currently released motion sensor games) anyway. Oh well, hopefully Nintendo won't push the consumer too hard and get this whole group of people who say "why buy this one when it'll be outdated in like 6 months?" with this. Nintendo needs to keep up the idea that new GBs only come out every 5 years, even though the GBC, GBA, and now GBA-SP (well unlike the GBC and GBA, this isn't a new system so much as a remodel of an old one) all came out pretty quickly one after the other.

Oh, and I've been meaning to say to whoever said Nintendo shouldn't add a light to the system because of some complaints about power lasting "told ya it's not a bad idea at all". Sheesh, when you can turn the light off, how is it wasting energy?
