Full Version: So... retreading Other M...

I've STILL yet to play it myself, but I've watched two of my friends worm their way through it and I've got a good impression.

Firstly, that subtitle is really dumb. I mocked the title of "New Super Mario Bros.", but at least that made sense. Other M? What is this, some sort of fancy French nonsense? Oh, I get it, the OTHER M is "Mother" or some pretentious nonsense right? Or, maybe it's just a codename they never got around to properly naming...

Anyway, I'll say this. The gameplay looks very fun. The combat is neat, and there is actually some pretty interesting puzzles and a little exploration going on. Not as much as a typical Metroid game, but it's not completely missing either. As a unique take, it's fine.

That said, then there's the other thing... Seeing more of the story, it's more of the same sexist stuff we've all talked about. It only gets WORSE as it goes on. Watching Samus literally freezing in place while soldiers all die around her, not because she's actually BEEN frozen, but because she's "scared", because she's having horrible nightmares about Ridley or whatever? Sheesh... This would have actually been excusable if THIS was supposed to be Zero Mission, but it's not, it's AFTER she's saved the universe 6 times already, not once showing this kind of fear. It's not like showing that she's human with a LITTLE fear of these giant things isn't called for, but it's ALL THE TIME from an experienced GALAXY SAVER.

That's the big thing to me. If this is going to be an official part of the storyline, somewhere between Fusion and Super Metroid, I have a hard time with it. Heck, her worshipping of Adam doesn't even fit the storyline set up in Fusion. There, she actually seemed to have a little respect but a lot of disagreement with him, and was only grudgingly working with Adam.

Ya know, I honestly think there's a way to save this story, and it's with a sequel where this Samus is just a clone. Yeah, that's the ticket. This one's a clone, the real one shows up about midway and explains that. It would explain EVERYTHING. Why's she acting like an insecure child with all those memories? The memories are imperfect and while she's got the details, she's got none of the emotional part, she's like an infant with a database experiencing it all for the first time. Yeah, and she's worshiping Adam because her memories were rewritten to revere a high-level official in the military for easy control. Ooh, and her weird talk about how she doesn't know how much time she spent floating around in her space ship? Yeah, that'll explain all o' dat! Sure, midway through the next game the real Samus shows up, in her Fusion suit, and one has a lot more mechanical moves, like the typical space jump and bombs, and Fusion Samus has more organic moves, like say a "sticky bomb" attached to enemies that crawl into out of the way areas to blow open passages and such. I'm a genius.
That article really puts it down. It makes me think that maybe that Yoshio fellow should never have taken the time to think about "Who Samus is". It was better off leaving the fans to decide that. Will any of this outrage actually hit home with this guy? Will he even hear about it?

It boggles the mind. That's considering that not only is Samus, up until now, a good character who's spare dialog painted a competent human being, she is one of the very few female leads who's armor isn't sexualized. Even Terra wears a mini-skirt. Samus's armor barely reveals anything feminine, it's even got giant oversized man-shoulders.

How did it come to this?

"Japan is still really sexist" is the best explanation I can come up with, really. But yeah, even that doesn't mean that this had to happen. :(

So much of that stuff the article points out is so sickeningly sexist... it's so sad to have this happen to Metroid. :bummed:
Considering I've seen plenty of actual human portrayals of women in Japanese games, such as, say, PREVIOUS Metroid games, that's not much of an excuse.
I said explanation, not excuse. The two are different. Because I agree, there is no excuse... but I think that is the explanation for why it could have happened. Note how the American games in the series, the Prime games, don't do any of that stupid junk. Sexism is bad here, but so, so much worse there, and that is reflected in stuff like anime, manga, and games. So while I am surprised that they actually did this to Nintendo -- I would not have predicted it -- once it happened, sadly I can understand how (or why) it did.

But yeah, I definitely mean it as an explanation, not an excuse. There is no excuse. And yes, some Japanese games do have better depictions of female characters than is the average, that is true. Other M, unfortunately, is on the other side of that.
Feeb. he's saying the other Metroid's are made by the Japs and contain no malice towards women- its specifically a Team Ninja thing.

However, if its treated as the first Metroid game her character shows a woman becoming a strong soldier and heroine (Just like Alien or Terminator). In Fusion she was denied use of her abilities by the Metroid version of Star Fleet, its military working with a vigalante/bounty hunter for pay and it makes sense to have those kinds of limitations and regulations.

I do like the clone theory though, a 'newborn' with all the memories of Samus.

That game where you play as a half naked chick and all of her moves are based on showing skin is a sexist game. Call of Duty, Halo, etc are sexist because you cant even play as a woman. See how easy it is? The bottom line is that its a solid Metroid title with its only real con being the (sometimes) wonky controls and camera, which is fine since its the first step in a new direction - I saw it described as 'Metroid of War' and 'Samus Gaiden' so a few experimental aspects with occasional wonks is permisable.
Yeah thats right bitches *situation*
I haven't played Other M yet. Probably won't anytime soon either.
Great Rumbler recieved 1 (ONE) Fail(s).
Too busy playing Resonance of Fate.

The game gets better once it stops with all the cutscenes, but it still deserves nothing but our derision. The game, discounting the writing, is riddled with poor decisions. Constant switching between first and third-person perspectives including while in combat, having health and missiles regenerate, holding your hand the whole way through, nixing the bulk of the series' trademarked exploration, and failing to heighten the mood of derelict space station with music [I've only heard a few random tracks in combat and cutscenes and they aren't particularly good or memorable].
Look not every game can be Dead Space 2.
I lafd.

I've still yet to play it. I can't help but giggle when I think of Nintendo saying they learned their lesson with Starfix and F'd-zero just to let a different company handle a huge franchise. Durp. But.... I still want to play it.
There's really no reason to want to play Other M, except maybe out a sick fascination.

F-Zero GX was awesome though.
Yeah I liked GX, even with the ridiculous difficulty curve.

Capcom also made some good Zelda games, and introduced Four Swords to us all (which is apparently getting released on the 3DS down the line). Rare and Retro both handled Donkey Kong awesomely, along with Retro's handling of Metroid. It's just too bad Team Ninja had to be in charge of this one. I have to wonder what Retro's developers think of the game.
Four Swords was done in-house.
Really? I saw Capcom's logo when I turned that game on... Did Capcom just do the update to LTTP or what?

According to this, it was Capcom in the form of a split company called Flagship that made all those games.

On the other hand Nintendo alone did Four Swords Adventures.
Looks like Four Swords GBA was co-developed between Capcom and Nintendo, while Four Swords Gamecube was just Nintendo.
Yeah, that's why I said Four Swords and not Four Swords Adventure.
