E3 2003: May 14-16

Only 19 days!
WOOHOO!!
Whee!

I had intended to go this year but, alas, money problems arose and prevented it :(.

Next year, then :).
My dream is to go to E3 to showcase something! Cool
um, yeah.
*hits CartoonDevil for not being excited about E3*
*claps*
hopes starcraft II will be annouced.
Also hopes that will hear more about starwars galaxies and WOW!
WOOHOO!!!

Metroid Prime 2 (I really hope that's not going to be the final name) is going to be shown in video form at E3! Yay!
WOOOOOOO-fucking-HOOBIE! That's so awesome... so soon, damn. It probably won't see the light of 2003, but still... awesome.
I had a dream about E3 awhile ago, it was really weird
Sony, Nintendo, Square Enix, Sega, Capcom and Konami anounced they would be merging into one company. They also unveiled their new console The PlayCubeCast. It had an 8GHZ processor and a 300GB hard drive and 8 controller slots. It then jumped forwards to a few years later and X-Box 2 had sold 0 units but the PlayCubeCast had sold the highest number of consoles in history
What a screwed up dream
But what a cool dream!
I almost never remember any dreams...
*Starts singing These Dreams by Heart....another great 80's song.*

That's because you're a souless automaton.
Ah, how nice of you to clear that up...
I had a dream once where I was swimming down a huge river with giant freshly cut logs, when I woke up I found out that ROCK STAR WILL PUBLISH GAMES FOR THE NINTENDO GAMECUBE. Ever since then, I decided not to dream. Now I abuse over the counter drugs and certain house cleaners.

I'm excited about E3. I hope Nintendo puts alot of power behind their (rumored?) Online Mario Kart. Hopefully other games will be announced, such as Mario Golf/Tennis, etc. online as well.

The most exciting thing has nothing to do with games though. I think Nintendo will make a big splash with its new business and marketing ideas. I'm kinda expecting to see a new label that represents Nintendo's mature marketing. It'll probably be something lame like Nintendo Extreme or NintenDEATH. If they dont go for a new label then that means Nintendo has decided to stay as an all-age-range demographic company and allow 3rd parties to handle the mature stuff. But Nintendo wants their image to change for the better, so we'll see.

Other than that, here's to year 3 of the GC, and many more to come. *a blatent lie*
Hi Lazy
Uh.. lazy? You do know that Mario Kart won't be online, right?
I'm really looking forward to E3. Sadly, there were technical difficulties in my plans and I won't be attending the show, but I'll be glued to my monitor for the full 96 hours. However, plans for next year's E3 have already begun so that this type of thing won't happen again.

Lucky me, my last AP exam EVAR is on May 12, which means that I'll just be recovering from mental overload when the press conferences start (May13). Of course, we all know that the biggest news comes out of the Nintendo Press Conference.

What am I looking forward to at this E3? The major titles MUST deliver. F-Zero has got to be more than glitz to be a must-have. Mario Kart: Double Dash must reinvent what addictive gameplay is(multiplayer!). Final Fantasy:CC must prove itself amid skepticism. Factor 5 must step it up a notch in the gameplay department to make Rogue Squadron 3 a top-tier game. Those on-foot levels have the potential of being utter crap. There are several second-tier games that I think could step up and make an impact. Pikmin 2, Viewtiful Joe, PN03, Soul Calibur II, Mario Tennis, and Mario Golf all have this potential. I'm sorry that I'm dissing Kirby's Air Ride and Wario World, but they just seem unexciting (to me at least).

But Nintendo's big E3 game maybe something that we know very little about. Some of these games have barely been announced, while others may be a bit too early for a big E3 unveiling: Resident Evil 4, Dead Phoenix, Killer 7, Billy Hatcher, "Game Zero," Silicon Knight's game, Star Fox Armada, Mario 128, Capcom's secret project, MGS:Twin Snakes, Metroid Prime 2 and perhaps an entirely new game from EAD.

One game that I think might surprise people is Eurocom's Sphinx.

At this stage in the game, I think it will be difficult for Nintendo to radically change its fortune.

One thing that I'm really surprised about is how Nintendo has been heavily relying on its franchises. Franchise games outnumber original games by a frightening number. I thought the point of farming out development to 3rd parties was so that EAD could focus on exciting, new game ideas, but I haven't seen anything this generation that has made me think, "Wow." Pikmin was a great game, but I feel that Pikmin barely scratched the surface of the main idea. Animal Crossing was clearly innovative, but it was really created last generation for N64, and by the time it came out in the United States, the Sims (PC) had taken a firm hold of innovation in the lifesim category. I really hope that Nintendo has a game up its sleave that answers the question, "Miyamoto, what was so innovative that it was worth hiding from the public?"

Uhh... you do know that Factor 5 made Turrican, and those indoor levels are somewhat inspired by Thornado? And you think they might be bad?

Oh, and where is this skeptcism about CC? I can't think of much of anything...

Oh, and Kirby's Air Ride looks great. As for Wario World, it looks somewhat bland so far but its Treasure so I'm sure that it'll get better.

Also, Soul Calibur 2 is all-platform... so it won't help anyone...

And F-Zero? You'd only say it doesn't look like it could be one of the best racing games ever if you dislike futuristic racers, I'd have to think.

And Mario Kart will be online, if unnoficially. As you know... :)
Can you run this Gamespy thing by me again? Along with a GameCube broadband/56k modem (are they even out yet...?), what else do you need, and how do you get it? What's the interface like? How would you connect with other people, etc?

They are out, just maddeningly difficult to find.
You need a broadband adaptor... 56k modem won't work for a IPX-spoofer console connection. You'd also need a internet PC... I'm not sure exactly how it works, actually, but I think the other thing you need is a hub... because you have to connect the Cube to the net via your PC, since the PC does the searching for and connecting to games.

As for the interface I'd imagine it'd depend on who makes it... Gamespy's would, I assume, use Gamespy Arcade...

The boys at Retro must be working overtime!

This E3 is so going to be the bomb!!
Now that Billy is no longer at PGC, I wonder if they'll make an E3 DVD this year...
ABF: Don't mind Nintendarse. He's always like that.

The big Capcom Five was shown last year, so of course they'll be as E3. Ign also confirmed that Silicon Knights' new game (Not Too Human) will be at the show, as will SF Armada, Capcom's secret project, and that new, original EAD game. Billy Hatchet is supposed to be coming out this fall so I have no idea why you think it'll be a no-show. The game is even going to be on Nintendo's very first Gamecube demo disc, for cripes sake.
Let the speculation begin as to what Silicon Knights secret game is.

I'm gonna say it's a sequel to Eternal Darkness.
I sure hope its a sequel to ED... but I would like them to get to finishing Too Human too... I mean, its been in development forever...+
I'd rather see another original game from them.
Since my friends and I use the gamespy tunnel (as well as XBConnect, which does pretty much the same thing on a different network) pretty often, I'll explain it to you.

Essentially, there are two ways to spoof the connection. One is via a hub, which sadly so far MK isn't supporting (well, nothing confirmed anyway). The other is the one that we may end up having to use. That second link up method for the spoof is two networking cards in your PC. One links you up to your service, the second is what the tunnel uses. The second, using this software, "pretends" to be a Gamecube in this case. The Cube thinks that it's hooked directly to another cube. Maybe hubs could do the job even in a direct system spoof. I'm not sure of the details there because all the XBox games I've linked support hubs.

Anyway, the software does two things. First, it finds someone else who wants to play (matchmaking). Then, it does the connecting. The systems are hereby "linked" to each other via software. This is only as effective as a normal wire connection though. Now the rest of the setup has to be done. The rest is handled soley on the GCN side (by both players), with no more PC stuff needing to be done (until you want to sever the connection and find someone else that is). Both the systems have to be on (duh), hooked up with their broadband to the second ethernet adapter (duh again), and put into whatever "searching for system" area the game is programmed for. In other words, you have to go into the game's system link mode up to where it says "searching for other cube" or something like that. Then, however the game is programmed to do the linking, once it sees the other person connected (the second they get into the system link portion of the same game), it'll do that. Some let you do some setup stuff before hand. Some go straight into the game. It's up to how the games are designed individually from there.

I may have made it sound complicated, but really it's very simple.

Requirements are what you wanted I think. Here you are:

*PC with one or two ethernet cards already setup. If hubs are supported, just one ethernet card and a hub would be better). Note that switches and routers can easily be substituted for a hub. The software may be able to use a hub even if the GCN game doesn't support a hub. I'm not certain though.

*Online broadband connection (honestly, this is using the GCN's broadband adapter to connect to each other, can you imagine the lag of spoofing braodband over a 56k connection?).

*GCN with broadband adapter.

*System Link compatible GCN game (like Mario Kart).

*Some sort of tunnel software made for GCNs specifically (the XBox software won't work because it has to trick the GCNs into thinking they are hooking up with a GCN, so the data sent out to them must look like GCN data).

*A total of 2 lengths of ethernet cable (one to go from the DSL or Cable modem device to your PC, and another to link your GCN to your PC). You will need one more if you have a hub (to link your PC and GCN to the hub, and the hub to your cable/dsl modem).

Since you ARE going to TC, I'm certain you have a PC (well, you might be visiting a friend or the library or using your DC, but that just means you are a looser, and yes, this is a joke).

I'm also pretty sure you have a GCN, and will be getting Mario Kart anyway.

The only things you should need then is the software (that's free if you can find it), the hub/second ethernet card (you can find them really cheap actually, as software etc sells a $30 hub with 4 cables), the GCN broadband adapter (which is FINALLY available in stores, where things SHOULD be bought), and finally, a broadband connection if you don't have one. That last one will be the toughy. Broadband isn't exactly cheap.
Thanks, DJ. To be honest, I'm too lazy to read through all that now, but I'll get around to it. It's appreciatied in any case.

Argh... swear to god, if Silicon Knights is working on a sequel to Eternal Darkness... I'll be really disappointed. Not that Eternal Darkness was a bad game or anything, I just think a sequel would be inappropriate and uninteresting. They better be working on either something original or Too Human.

The thrill of seeing an original game won't be presented by Retro for certain, so I really hope Silicon Knights can compensate in that area.

Has Nintendo EVER had some amazing shocking stunning "wow that's totally not like Nintendo!" announcement at E3..... EVER? Sure they show some unexpected stuff, but nothing SUPER unexcepted, like a huge online plan. Usually the unexpected amounts to some game being first person or cel shaded. You guys making huge deals about that have blinded you to how minor such things really were.
Erm

Who are you talking to?

Pikmin was a pretty big surprise. That came out of nowhere.
I don't know if you were referring to me or not, but in any case, I don't think it's unreasonable to hope for something original from Silicon Knights.
Of course not. I'd love to see an original Gamecube title that shows off their graphical prowess.
I wasn't addressing anyone in particular. This is a message board.

Pikmin was just a new game. Unexpected maybe, but not some amazing earth shattering "this is totally unlike Nintendo!" announcement that turned the gaming industry on it's head. That's what everyone always expects, but it's never delivered. I expect the games NIntendo has announced, some new announcements for some franchise games, and a few weird titles. On the other hand, announcing some amazing merger, a new system by 2004, or an amazing online plan, are things I don't expect. I'd love to be proven wrong though. I'm just saiyan is all...
Who here said that they're expecting some sort of earth-shattering announcement? Are you replying to the Phantom TC Poster again, DJ? That dastardly fellow. I told him to stay away and quit bugging you.
Cel-shaded Zelda was a pretty earth-shattering event, altough that was Space World not E3.

I'm not expecting any insanely huge, coming out of nowhere announcements and I don't know why anyone else would expect something like that, but what I am expecting are some super-awesome games. And that's why this E3 is gonna rock.
Again, I wasn't really addressing anyone in particular, this is a message board.
Erm
You mean you aren't used to him talking to himself...?
Yes it is a message board, but usually when you say something it is in reply to someone. Unless you post something that makes little to no sense and for little or no reason.
I'll never get used to it.

*goes back to playing Oracle of Ages*

This game rules!
Did you know that the population of dung beetles in Africa is dropping at a rate of 2.3% per year! This is insane! Someone's got to do something to save this beautiful dung eating creatures!

This is a prime example of a post that makes no sense and was made for no reason.
Yes, DJ, it is a message board. However, it doesn't mean that talking about things that noone else has mentioned as if its the topic of the thread just doesn't make sense! Do you constantly change topics in the middle of conversations in real life too?
But it's true though. Who else is going to eat all of our crap??
Actually, Beano, I was hoping they were working on an Eternal Darkness sequel. Maybe that's just because I'm replaying the game right now, but I do hope to see one. ED is one of the best games Nintendo alone has to offer, and I think they know that, and they're going to milk it for all they can. This is Nintendo we're talking about, that's just what they do.
But only five people bought the game, most them being TC members. 'Tis a shame, really.
