Yeah, that came out of nowhere...

John Carmack on it:

Quote: Why did id sell? "We're really getting kind of tired competing with our own publishers in terms of how our titles will be featured," Carmack said. "And we've really gotten more IPs than we've been able to take advantage of. And working with other companies hasn't been working out as spectacularly as it could. So the idea of actually becoming a publisher and merging Bethesda and ZeniMax on there [is ideal.] It would be hard to imagine a more complementary relationship. They are triple A, top-of-the-line in what they do in the RPGs. And they have no overlap with all the things we do in the FPSes."

John Romero's not happy. Not that he's worked there for a long time. :)

Quote: id Software co-founder, and all round drama queen, John Romero, branded Bethesda's purchase of id Software as "disgusting," in a Tweet:

ZENIMAX??????? Disgusting.

He quickly followed up with:

Fallout 3 bought DOOM. Wow.

Still bitter at getting the boot?

Not sure what I think, kind of strange... too bad that it reinforces once again how dead the PC industry is, given Bethesda's focus more on consoles than PC now. Very sad in that respect. :(
Sounds like a plus for both parties. Bethesda gets a closer peek at some much needed technical genius and id gets a publisher that doesn't constantly lock horns with them.

Also, John Romero lol
Yeah, apart from anyone who wishes that PC developers would stay focused on the PC... like, oh, me...
id was already doing Rage, Wolfenstien, and Doom 4 for consoles long before this came about.
Sure, but are they designed console-first, or PC-first? Bethesda, like most developers now, has become a console-first company...
The built the idtech 5 engine for the PC and then ported it to PS3/Xbox360.
If they continue to do it that way, then there won't be a problem.
